now I couldn’t do this clear and lead with my hips in the downswing I used to have a downswing where my hips got to impact like this dead Square on really a rush and a blur in transition even my weight hanging back in the trail side to that right side that’s what I see so many amateur golfers do and these two drills really were absolutely transformative for me to be able to clear those hips so for you guys doing out there it’s not only going to help you clear and lead with your hips better it’s going to help you with power it’s going to help you with control of your Club face Club speed everything you want so let’s get into it so let’s get into this first drill so this first drill was so instrumental for me both of these were which I encourage all you to do it so like I said in that intro there I used to start the down swing so quick and blurred with my arm I would just pull the Sha down have no time for my body to do anything at all where I’ll get that big normally a left one in there the only way for me to function with that was to get the club face opening up early to be able to time all the closure of face that’s going to happen if I’m not got any body rotation or any hip clearance so what my coach at the time gave me he gave me two drills it was the first one so this was called a step through drill so this is one I talk about quite a lot on the channel and it was so so crucial for me in my journey to be a to get the hips clearing and get rotating there’s a bunch of drills which I talked about in the past as well but this was absolutely one of the best ones so what we do here we set up to the golf ball just like normal and then we bring our left foot over to our right foot Club out the middle of our staner and then step as soon as we take the club back step so what that’s doing that’s getting me ultimately moving my body in a downswing sequencing terms with my lower body extremely early so that’s where I’m getting that downswing sequencing starting my lower body in the takeaway so now I in possible for me to rush with my upper body because my lower body has had such a head start that it is just going to sequence me out a lot more and especially like me really rushed this is exactly what I needed so bringing the foot over Club out the middle it’s really hard so absolutely be warn for that but now step through and there we go so for me this was incredibly difficult as you can see I still struggle to hit good golf shots doing this drill for me why that is I have cereal py which talk about quite a lot on the channel affects my left side so that’s one of my reasonings of why I struggle to get clearing cuz my left side of the body the target side is the side that has the M about you know disabled part to it I’m almost like with my calf it’s like I’m doing a calf raise all the time my tendons are really really long and I’ve got about 50 to 75% of my right side strength from my left so really not the strongest in that side as well which is why you can all do this so that’s where doing this drew a ton then only got get me of course to get those hips leading quicker cuz it’s doing in the takeway but it also helped me with my striking issues cuz what we see so many golfers out there do is we’ll see so many golfers who struggle with their ball striking not get their weight into their lead side so that’s where if you course you’re getting that foot planting over extremely early you’re getting your Wai into your left side really really early so that means the lowest point of your swing Arc is going to be after that go ball the better we shift the lowest point of the Swing Arc moves after the ball if we don’t shift then we hang back lower point of the Swing Arc either gets level the ball or behind it that’s going to be a really poor shot so doesn’t only help with clearing the hips which is really good for many things but it helps with your general ball striking as well so Club over to the middle foot and then step through so you don’t need to hit them hard or anything like that just try and make contact is ultimately it so that’s where when you’re doing a drill that’s really really tough something I always say to here to you guys on YouTube or to my students over on skillist I’ll say to them you absolutely need to see bad shots at times when you’re doing a drill if you’re puring your drill all the time well that could be just a brilliant drill but timly it’s most likely it’s not really targeting or improving your faults all too much so that’s where for me again I could probably hit 100 Balls here and I’ll probably hit 50 of them good that doesn’t mean the drill is bad that just means it really targets my a area which for me my weak side of my body but this isn’t just good for myself again it got me to where I’m clearing the hips really nicely now being a disabled golfer as well but it will get all of you absolutely all of you moving better so even there I mean I’m quite happy with those last few shots variable in a bit of distance but again cuz sometimes I’m just not going to be able to commit onto that left side you will all have a much better array of shots most likely than I do doing this drill but they were all relatively good contact which is what I really want if again if I stood here doing a load of balls yeah I’ll probably hit absolutely handful of them not great but I’m going to be training the subconscious to get onto this left side so this was the drill number one in the simple turns for this video clearing and leaning with the hips gets the hips starting really early and stopped me from really rushing oh that was nice lovely and straight quite good but there was one other drill so let’s get to it now this second drill I will talk about this drill for years to come because this was one that was so again so helpful for my golf swing it will be for you guys out there as well there’s not a single golfer who can’t use this drill probably one actually Hideki maxama might not be able to cuz he already does it and that is pausing at the top of your swing so you can view this as the step after doing the previous drill so once you feel good and comfortable with that step drill you can do this draw afterwards so me and my coach at the time we got up to the top of our swing of course if I was someone like me really rushing Out Racing everything with my arms hips had no time to catch up what’s a great way to Target that paws at the top and then turn in that down swing so pause for just about a second or so and then through and is an absolute brilliant one and again really really challenging so for me again hard for me to do but that’s why I love doing it because it’s difficult practice needs to be tough but also when I started doing this drill such an important lesson for drills is I couldn’t even remotely hit the golf ball doing this one I could doing the other one fun enough this one the pause at the top was what my coach gave me first in that lesson these two were both given to me to this in the same lesson so this one was given to me first but I couldn’t hit the ball and at the time when I was given that I was roughly around a three or so handicap couldn’t hit the ball I was fattening it shanking it I think I even missed a couple had a couple air shots cuz I was so blurred in transition so that transition was so far so blurred that stopping it was so unfamiliar to me I just couldn’t make contact so that’s where I just kept on doing it until I was able to hit a good golf shot and that’s where we had that step through drill ultimately when the first time I was introduced to that drill which was from this lesson we’re talking about here was given to me because I was so bad doing that other drill so it just gave it to me so I would have something that was almost like a little bit easier to do so of course still really tough but imagine it like you’re in the gym you want to let’s say bench 225 or let’s say guys are here in the UK 100 kilos you really want to go and do it but of course for most people if they lift up that we straightaway it’s going to crush them that was essenti the go swing sense that pause at the top drill I just couldn’t do it wasn’t beneficial at the very start so that’s where it with we had that step through drill once I got a little bit more comfortable with that step through drill I think I put that ball there too quickly I didn’t read it so then once I got comfortable then we went back more into that pause drill but the pause drill again guys I was hitting the ball terribly for ages for months and months and months doing it but then all of a sudden I started to make good contact doing it and then out on the golf course it absolutely transformed it for me it was the biggest difference in let’s say night and day and scoring I’ve ever had in my golf game it was without that drill I wouldn’t be here talking to you as a pro on YouTube no way I would have probably given the game up because it was tough I might have been saying you know maybe with my disability professional golf isn’t for me so luckily my coach at the time gave me this drill really really good it did change my life ultimately this drill but don’t expect to hit it perfectly every time especially if you suffer from rushing that down swing just like I did so good pause and then turn as a nicer strike really really good one so again this could be a great one for guys who just get again a little bit rushed maybe in a different part of their body might be their upper body going first regardless they could stop at the top and then go it’s like tiger back in the day of course was made famous from doing this drill CU he used to over fire that right side of his body early getting in that Olay position he talked about now was that right side of the hip kicking out early and getting the club stuck behind so tiger what he would do get up to the top feel like his right side stays back and his arms get more in front that’s why he did it again so many reasonings you could do this just for me it really helped me clear and lead with those hips so guys if you are really struggling to clear and lead with those hips absolutely this will help you a ton but I would also encourage you to see is there anything you’re doing in your golfing positional that will stop you from clearing or leading with your hips or even just rotating the downswing as that vast majority of people now I do have courses down in the description that Target this exactly like my rotation guide like my early extension guide redive into this but also if you want onet toone help with me out on skillist online you can work we can work anywhere in the world you’ve absolutely got me available JC these drills look perfect for me, thank you. As I've got older, my hips have become less active, my question is, would you/did you combine both drills at the same time? Thanks again.
chown s da best
As I understand it yes Tiger’s father made him do the pause drill a million times. He hated it. Ummmm it worked for him. 😬😜
Thanks for sharing your physical challenges too. I struggle with a left dropfoot. Meaning my left calf through the foot has only about 10% power left. Walking is difficult. Balance is very challenging. But I still manage to carry a course handicap of 12, and 18 index. I need to play shorty tees. I just can’t fire in the left side. I like this drill and I love the pause , that’s part of my normal swing. I got bullied by someone online saying if you can’t play the white tees you should just play putt putt courses. What a horrible bully.
Do you actually play golf with the step drill?
I have to get back to it! Did in person lessons for 2 years and reduced handicap but struggle with longer clubs. Excellent video!!
You are an excellent instructor- thanks for all your advice 👍
Certainly worth a try. I’ve done the Gary P. Step through before. My biggest problem is getting quick from the top. Then I’m out of my posture and nothing good happens after that. I did try the pause at the top into my net. I will try it on the range tomorrow. Thanks
Watched your video last night and recognised the issues with zero transition and hip turn.
Was playing today and spent 5 minutes in the nets before the round trying your drills. I had the opposite reaction than you, couldn't get to grips with the step through but the Hideki pause had immediate results.
It's still work in progress but out on the course I hit half a dozen of the best shots I've hit in the last year.
I might need to pay you a visit some day for a lesson, not a long drive down from Glasgow.
Everything you describe is exactly where I’ve been for a few years. You’ve sold me. I’ll give these drills a try. A long try. Like 5000 reps apiece. If I don’t see any improvement, I’ll probably quit the game. Thanks for the great video. Time to hit some balls.
Great drill this is what I need
Hard to believe the video I took of my swing… yep. Squared up at impact (my brain cannot believe it)… so this could be helpful.. Thanks!
Good vid, I was mainly having trouble shifting weight with my driver, I found best to let my right foot heel come up on the back swing, Putting it back down was moment that shifted weight and the rest of the swing then fell into place with arm and hip rotation, also stopped any recerse pivot.
What iron should I use for this drill?
Love this. I was taught a variation on the step through drill to get me moving my weight onto my left sooner. Transformed my game. I’m still a mid handicapper but I’m so much more consistent and I can enjoy the game so much more!
Great drills. I admire your perseverance in managing the golf swing with the left side challenges you have. If we want to do it right and are able bodied-we have no excuses! Congrats and thank you!
Are you using jumbo grips ??? If so, Do you like and recommend?
I've just recently trained myself to get my trail elbow connected to the body on the downswing, while also getting my wrist straight, even slightly bowed. And I've never in my life experience better contact and ball flight. Now this drill here is my next phase! Its exciting when you finally realize how to do things properly!😂
Or just set your weight forward and keep it there through out
the swing. Weight transfer is kind of silly for amateurs.
Drill # 1 is useful if you are swinging the club from atop a tree. Drill # 2 is useful if you are swinging your club under water during scuba diving
Too much idle talk to get to the point.
great video straight to the points you are trying to get across never lost my attention many youtuber instructors need to learn not to waffle on
That first drill will help me. I have always had problems with weight shift.
Great humility in this video. Really helpful.
I understand this drill but when u play real golf with two legs apart how to do same swing?
Pause drill and the moe norman drill are the best things that have ever happened to my swing
Ever try to play around with that technique
That's funny@8:42 " because it WAS tough". It still is and always will be
You have to be aware of the weight on your feet, backswing it is right, follow through it is left. You have to be aware of that shift as a trigger to start your swing and square your shoulders. A lot of people are focused on the swing and ball and are unaware of the feet and shoulders. That is how the shoulders go wild, dipping, getting out front, or you are late with the weight shift. Why did I hit it straight into the woods, your back shoulder dipped, you hit it off your right foot, you rotated your shoulder beyond square. If you had a choice of a subconscious, almost automatic swing or concourse swing but subconscious shoulders and feet, you are better with the subconscious swing. Concentrating on the swing may allow you to hit the ball, but the hit is lottery if you are wrong with the shoulders and weight. On the other hand, you trust your setup and mechanics with a proper swing, and are not that aware of the head hitting the ball, it is nice to remember the ball strike but consistency comes from doing things right and it will work out, you do not need any hand/eye to hit the ball that is motionless.
I have a book from 1982 written by Peter Kostis that has that has a drill which kind of combines these two. He called it the 'baseball drill'. Start with your lead foot close to your rear foot, swing to the top of your backswing, step forward with the lead foot into your normal stance and release the downswing.
The pause is gold, its my go to during a game when my swing gets bad, 2 practice swings with pause especially on a slope allows my brain to calculate alignment and ball position.
Wow. I have the exact opposite problem. Right leg is weak due to ACL repair so it always is bent and wants to fire early. Your swings with the drill are phenomenally better than the arm swing move at the beginning.
Thanks for this. Tore my left rotator cuff last year and am really having a hard time testing/stressing it, so I am getting behind with my hips with the short irons where the swing is steeper. I will try these drills for sure. Excellent instruction and thank you for explaining the why and the how, so clearly.
This is incredible. Tried it out on the range because my transition is ridiculously hurried and after three visits I’m hitting it higher and straighter than ever. Not every shot by a long way, of course, but this has unblocked a huge problem. Now I’m scouring through all your other vids 🙂 Great work!
Erica Larkin at Performance Golf has been teaching the "Step Drill" for years. It's where I first saw it and it has helped me sequence the downswing. She also teaching the use of the "Towel Drill" as a supplement. In tandem, both work beautifully together to properly sequence the downswing and get better and more solid contact.
Def try this out anything that can improve my turn in sequence (early). Dam annoying to have this fault, know its there and not be able to resolve it.
Drill two looks like all shoulders and will cause most people to come over the top and shank.
Having played alot of competitive Baseball & Softball, this is an easy way for me to hit the ball.
The term "leading with the hips" is the greatest swing destroyer known to man. Why? This term promotes lateral hip movement, which destroys the attempt to make solid contact. Much better is to encourage maintaining the left hip over the grounded left foot. The only move would then be a backward of the left hip 90° to target line, clearing space for the right hip as it moves down the line towards the target
Couldn't hit the ball but only had a 3 handicap?? 🤔
Have you tried the carnivore diet for your cerebral palsy?
