I am in need of any ideas to repair the bottom hem of my retractable screen. The weight bar is in the pocket below the stitching, and the tear is right above where the stitching meets the hem and screen. I can try sewing with some heavy duty thread. Was wondering if anyone has tried a patch, or a patch combined with stitching to reinforce the tear. Other than the tear, the fabric in the impact area is in great condition.

If you can get the two sections to sit flush with enough material you can just sewing back together. But if it doesn’t, find a sacrificial material that you can cut a shape large enough to do a patch. Maybe some canvas. Just put it behind the the screen and you won’t even notice it.

Head over to r/sewing. With the weight bar you don’t really have much room for stabilizing and strengthening that section.

If I were to do this I’d zigzag the bottom part of the tear with some stabilizer fabric to make it more sturdy and then put a satin stitch that extends beyond the tear. If you’re comfortable doing it, ripping the seam, seeing in a patch, then sewing it back up again would be the best way.
