A Scottish hotel in the Highlands has earned international recognition, featuring among the world’s best hotels. Gleneagles in Auchterarder secured 78th place on the extended list released by World’s 50 Best Hotels.

Set in Scotland’s Southern Highlands, Gleneagles spans a sprawling estate designed to maximise its scenic surroundings.

“Set in Scotland’s Southern Highlands, roughly 45 minutes’ drive from Edinburgh, this sprawling estate capitalises on its exceptional location, with every guest room positioned to appreciate the sweeping views,” said World’s 50 Best.

The property recently completed a five-year renovation of its 232 bedrooms, now equipped with all the luxury features expected of a high-end country house hotel.

The estate offers an array of outdoor pursuits. Golf is a highlight, with three championship courses, while salmon fishing on the River Tee, off-road 4×4 driving, falconry, ferreting, shooting, and horse-riding provide additional options.

The hotel’s website describes the property as “one of Scotland’s most iconic luxury hotels, where unrivalled country pursuits and untold glamour have reigned for over a century.”

It adds that with 850 acres to explore, there are “endless family adventures to enjoy across our lochs, glens and golf courses,” alongside a spa for couples, live piano music in The Strathearn, cocktails by candlelight, and Michelin-starred dining.

Accommodation ranges from cosy snugs to grand suites. “From our cosiest snugs to our grandest quarters, each of our 205 individually designed rooms and 28 suites has been meticulously crafted with comfort – and the perfect night’s sleep – in mind.

“Unwrap the robes and unwind: welcome to our 5-star hotel, welcome home,” the website states.

Dining spans intimate candlelit rooms to a clubhouse setting, catering to family celebrations, post-round drinks, romantic dinners, and nightcaps.

World’s 50 Best Hotels, known for recognising exceptional hospitality, launched its first extended list this year, highlighting hotels outside the top 50.

“From this year and beyond, we will be able to showcase an even larger pool of hotels and territories, and celebrate the exceptional teams who bring them to reality with the extended list,” said a representative.

The list of longlisted hotels, ranking 51 to 100, covers 40 cities worldwide, from Four Seasons properties to independent boutique hotels.

Europe accounted for 17 entries, with Italy topping the numbers at nine, including Borgo Santandrea on the Amalfi Coast in 53rd place.

Asia contributed 16 hotels, with the Aman Nai Lert in Bangkok as the highest-ranked on the extended list. Every inhabited continent is represented, including Mount Nelson in South Africa, the sole African entry.

The top 50 hotels will be revealed at an awards ceremony on October 30 at London’s Old Billingsgate, but the extended list already offers a glimpse into the global luxury hospitality scene and the exceptional experiences these hotels provide.
