Madison. Bel Kong Shog made history in Madison, capturing her third consecutive WIAA girls state golf title at University Ridge Golf Course. For the Kfax Elkmound senior, it was a moment she’ll never forget. With her victory, Kungshaw became just the fifth golfer in WA history to win three state titles, solidifying her place among Wisconsin’s all-time great high school golfers. Kong Shaw defended her division 2 championship with a strong second round 74, finishing five shots ahead of a three-way tie for second place. It’s definitely a great feeling to do this again, Kong said. It’s amazing to accomplish this because it is tough competing at this level. There are a lot of really good players at the state meet. The emotions were running high as she drained her final putt to secure the three repeat. It definitely means a lot. I was really happy for sure, she said. I had mixed emotions because my four years of high school are done, but I was happy for what I accomplished. Her younger sister, Clara, also shown in her freshman season, finishing fifth and just two shots out of second place. I am so proud of my sister, Belle said. Clara played really well. It was great to be on the team with my best friend this year. It was so awesome. Kong Shog started her final round on the back nine, parring her first 11 holes and quickly building a five-shot lead. Spooner Junior Avery Voltz briefly closed the gap to three shots after Kongog bogied number three, but Belle bounced back with a clutch birdie on number four, expanding her lead and relying on her experience to close out the round with steady pars. Number four is the toughest hole on the course, and the pin placement was hard, she said. I knew my lead had been cut down, but I was still confident and I knew I had experience on my side. I was able to make an 8-ft putt for birdie on number four. I was happy when I made that. The Kongog sisters led Kfax Elk Mound, competing in its first state tournament as a team to a third place finish. Clara shot 78 and 77, contributing to the team’s total of 704 over two rounds. Spooner captured the team title with 688, while Edertton took second at 696. Belle also praised her teammates for their efforts, highlighting seniors Gabby Amble, Isabelle Bayer, and sophomore Izzy Lewig. I am so proud of every one of my teammates. She said, “They are my best friends. I am so grateful for the opportunity we had going to state as a team. We had a great year.” Bel Kongshaw’s historic three repeat combined with her sister’s outstanding freshman season and the team’s first ever state showing makes this a momentous chapter in Kfax Elk Mound golf history.
