The esteemed European Golf Club, consistently ranked among Ireland’s top golf courses, is set to shut its doors later this year and won’t reopen until 2027. Situated in Brittas Bay, County Wicklow, the European Club is highly regarded as one of the country’s finest courses and was even ranked as the 14th best in Ireland by Irish Golf magazine earlier this year. It has also featured in the world’s top 100 list, making it in 93rd in the Golf Digest list for 2024.

Just last week, an email was dispatched to club members confirming that the course would be out of action from December 2025 until late Spring 2027 for work on the renowned links track.

“Dear Member, we are writing to let you know that, effective 8th December 2025, the current operations of ‘The European Club’ (the Club) will cease. The Club will come to an end and the course will close to allow a major redevelopment of the grounds and facilities.

“This project represents a significant investment and will create a new and different golfing offering, designed to stand alongside the very best destinations internationally,” reports the Irish Mirror.

“To allow these works to proceed, all existing membership arrangements will conclude on the closure date 8th December 2025.When the redevelopment is complete and the new offering is ready to launch, updates will be made available on a new website (details to follow once it is live). At a future stage, the current members will be given the opportunity to join the new offering.

“We would expect to open the New Golf Club in late Spring 2027.

“On behalf of the Club, we want to sincerely thank you for your support over the past number of months. We look forward to sharing further details with you through the new offerings website in due course.

“Yours sincerely, Raymond and Nicky Conlan”.

Earlier this year, the club was snapped up by Raymond and Nicky Conlan for a cool €35 million from previous owner Pat Ruddy. Upon acquiring the club, the father-son team expressed their plans to refurbish the renowned course and make it an even more appealing spot for golfing tourists.

Since its inauguration in 1987, the European Course has flourished into one of the country’s most esteemed courses, hosting top-tier golfers such as Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods, who holds the course record of 67.
