After an opening round of -4 gave him a share of the lead at the PGA Tour Champions’ SAS Championship, Pádraig Harrington struggled on day two and now finds himself eight shots adrift.
A bogey on the third and a double on the eighth saw the double-Senior-major winning Dubliner drop three shots over the first eight holes, and despite picking up a birdie on nine, further bogeys on 10, 14 and 16 had him the wrong side of par with two holes to go.
A birdie on 17 got him back to level for the week, but he fell into a tie for 20th and, eight shots behind leader Alex Cejka, is likely playing for minor honours in Sunday’s final round.
Darren Clarke covered his first five holes in six-over in Friday’s opening round, but he’s now played the next 31 in -5 as a three-under 69 in round two lifted him into a share of 29th in the 78-an field.
It’s a German one-two at the top of the leaderboard as Alex Cejka shot the low-round of the day, carding four birdies and an eagle in a bogey-free effort in testing conditions at Prestonwood Country Club in North Carolina to hit the front and pull three clear at -8..
Chasing him down is the legendary Bernhard Langer, who shot a two-under 70 to move to -5. The 68-year-old two-time Masters winner has yet to win in 2025, and should he fail to do so over the final few events, it would be the first time in 19 seasons that he’s failed to register at least one win on the Champions Tour.
