BURLINGTON, N.C. – Longwood men’s golf closed out the Phoenix Invitational, hosted by Elon, in fourth in a 16-team field.
Hunter Swidzinski led the team on the day with a three-under 68 to climb up into a tie for 11th in the third and final round.
NOTABLE RESULTS:
Longwood finished fourth after a three-round tally of 283-279-286—848 (-4) at the Alamance Country Club. The team finished four shots behind Charleston Southern but two shots ahead of both Queens and Radford, who tied for fifth.
Swidzinski put together his second straight round below par behind four birdies and an eagle. He played his back nine at two under par with seven pars and a pair of birdies. He finished with a 73-67-68—208 (-5) to tie for 11th.
Matthew Lyons tied for 20th behind a three-round tally of 69-69-72—210 (-2) that represented his first round as part of a team competition in more than a calendar year after missing last season due to an injury. He competed at the Griffin Invitational as an individual earlier in the fall.
Cameron Hardison was the third Lancer in the top 25 after tying for 24th with a trio of consistent rounds at 70-70-71—211 (-2). He was the only player on the team to record three straight rounds at par or better on the Par 71 course.
Both Kai Krishnan and David Lafreniere tied for 69th. Krishnan put together a 71-76-77—224 (+11) while Lafreniere had a 76-73-75—224 (+11).
WHAT THEY SAID:
“I’m sure everybody would agree that we could call today a so-so- round,” said Longwood Head Coach Kevin Fillman. “Although we had made some goals to be better, we still put the ball in a number of bad spots and missed a lot of putts that needed to be made. We definitely have to continue working in those areas.”
“It was a great experience to be out there with Elon and UNC Wilmington,” Fillman added about the team’s playing group on the day. “Both were NCAA Tournament teams in recent years and will likely have a chance to be again in the spring.”
“Hunter played another solid round,” Fillman added. “He had a fantastic summer, and, as expected, he’s putting together a very good fall. It was also good to get some different players in the lineup this week. Although young, I believe we have a deep team. Obviously, guys still have to go prove it on the golf course, but I know having a bunch of players who can step in and go compete at any time will help us greatly down the road.”
