Colin Morawa has defended himself against claims that his comments encouraged the unruly behavior of American fans during last month’s RDER Cup at Beth Page Black. Ahead of the highly anticipated showdown in New York, Morawa had told reporters he hoped the opening day would be absolute chaos after describing the practice rounds as tame. His remarks were intended to fire up home supporters and create an electric atmosphere. I hope Friday is just absolute chaos. The two-time major winner said before the tournament, “I’m all for it. It feeds into who we are as American players and as a team. We want that energy. We want to use it to our advantage.” But what followed over the weekend was widely condemned. Several European players were subjected to vile verbal abuse. And one shocking incident saw Rory Mroyy’s wife, Erica Stole, have beer thrown at her. The PGA of America later issued an apology to Mroy and his wife with CEO Derek Sprag expressing regret on behalf of both the organization and the US team. Now, as he prepares to compete in this week’s Bayurren Classic in Japan, Morawa has insisted his words were taken out of context and that he never intended to incite offensive fan behavior. I think people misunderstood what I meant. The 28-year-old said, “Rider Cups are supposed to be full of energy, and when I said chaos, I didn’t mean for fans to be rude. That’s not on me. I just wanted passion. Fans showing pride for the country they’re supporting.” Morawa continued, “I don’t think me saying one word made people act a certain way. I don’t have that kind of power. Fans can make their own decisions, and yes, some cross the line. There’s definitely a boundary that needs to be respected.” He added that golf presents a unique challenge compared to other sports because of how close spectators can get to the players. In golf, we hear almost everything that’s said out there, he explained. That’s part of what makes it different, but there needs to be a clear understanding of what’s appropriate and what isn’t. Following Europe’s 15-113 triumph, their first Rder Cup win on US soil since 2012, Mroy publicly condemned the behavior of some American fans, saying the sport must hold itself to a higher standard. Moraua’s teammate Xander Chauffell also reflected on the experience, admitting he heard unsaavory remarks throughout the event, echoing the sentiment that the atmosphere at Beth Page sometimes went too far.

  1. MAGA Lechambeau brought out the worst in the gallery- the element that has no place in golf–no classholes.

  2. Beer wasn’t thrown at Rory’s wife. It was a cup knocked out of somebody’s hand. The videos showed it. Rory is a 🐱

  3. Making noise is one thing, personally insulting players and their families and shouting out on backswings is not acceptable

  4. Morikawa screwed up socially. Misjudged the audience. Underestimated the power of words. Metaphorically, Morikawa may not have started the dumpster fire. But he should not have brought a jerry can of gas to the fire.

  5. The solution is simple, no more Ryder Cups on American soil. Replace Team USA with Team World and start a newer better version without the USA.
