In the land of the rising sun, several players were rising up the leaderboard as the fierce winds that tore through the first round finally calmed, allowing for much better scoring on Friday at Yokohama Country Club. Yesterday felt like survival, said Xander Chaell. Today it felt like there was almost no wind. If you hit good shots, you were rewarded. Alex Smallley and defending champion Nico Echavaria surged early with matching 65s to climb into contention. Chaufell and Max Graaserman fired sizzling 63s, but no one went lower than Keith Mitchell, who posted a brilliant 62. Grazerman, continuing his stellar play in Japan, claimed the 36 hole lead at 12 under par. And with no cut in this 78 player field, everyone still has a shot at the title. Grazerman’s round was pure control. Six birdies, an eagle, and zero bogeies. His final putt dropped for Birdie, completing what he called a stress-free round. Laughing afterward, he said everything felt good. I’ve been doing things well all week. I just need to keep doing what I’m doing. After finishing runnerup last year, he knows exactly what’s at stake. The job’s not finished, he said. foot on the gas, keep making birdies, and go for the lowest score possible. Chauffeel is also surging, posting a bogey-free eight under 63 to remind everyone why he’s ranked fourth in the world. After a season derailed by injury, he’s looking to build momentum again. Confidence is the biggest thing, he said. When you’re playing well, you stop overthinking and just let it flow. Winning again in Japan would be especially meaningful. His mother grew up here and his grandparents still live nearby. It would be special, he said. We’re in a good spot, but there’s plenty of golf left. Alex Norin continues his hot streak after victories at the British Masters and BMW PGA Championship. Now tied for second at 8 under, he’s chasing his first PGA Tour win. You don’t have to hit every shot perfect, he said. Just trust your routines. Stick to your plan and the good play will come. Defending champion Nikico Etchavaria is also in the mix. Three shots back after a seven under 65. He’s ready to defend his title with what he calls his villain mindset, saying he thrives on spoiling the party when it matters most. As the weekend looms, Max Graaserman leads the chase. Chaofell lurks and Norin and Chavaria are charging. The Bay Current Classic is heating up fast in Japan and the trophy is still anyone’s to claim.
