You get paired with Jack Nicholas at the Australian Open. What was that moment like? I my pants. Sorry. I was like, I just won the tournament the week before and um he put his hand on my shoulder and he said, “Hey, I’m looking forward to playing. I heard you won last week. Congratulations. And I’m looking forward to playing with you on Thursday.” I said, “Me too, Jack.” I was so nervous. Anyway, I walk onto the first tea on Thursday and tee my ball up. Whoever’s been in front of a celebrity or and you try and tee it up and try and get that ball and I finally get it to rest on the tea and I cold topped my T-ot. Cold topped it. I didn’t hit it 30 yards off the tea. It actually hit a bush from here to the end of the stage. And I looked and you know, it felt like all the blood just drained out of my head and out of my body. And I was so embarrassed.

  1. It's weird. I played in 100s of tournaments as a kid and some pro golf in my early 20s. The pressure/nervousness of trying to hang on to a lead, or win a playoff, for instance, is so different from hitting your opening drive on the first hole in front of someone your intimidated by. It almost like you have to have experience dealing with BOTH, so that you can differentiate between the two.

  2. For a pro golfer it's strange that he was that nervous .. I think this give some insite as to why he couldn't get the job done from very strong positions in a lot of majors .. he was a great golfer but a bit behind the very best in mental strength

  3. I was there at the Australian Golf Course, when that happened. I was with my father and we were standing right behind Greg. When he topped the ball and hit that bush it was so strange seeing Greg trying to find a hole to hide in. It was so thrilling and exciting to watch the guys play. I actually took the day off from school.

  4. In Norman’s first year, the media went above and beyond to make Norman look like James Bond.

Cool, collected, tall, tan, handsome, hunts sharks, can’t be shook by pressure…all of it.

I think it took them till the 96 Masters to finally let those labels go.

But as far as Jack goes, he made so damned many golfers nervous. 86 was it as far as his majors, but he lurked for a round or two on the leaderboard till 1990. That’s 30 years like that. Then he added 1998 because, yeah.

  5. He could never get that green jacket that he wanted so desperately. He came so close, so many times and one hole near the end of the 4th day would ruin his tournament several times. It became almost cliche. Three runners' up when he was leading making the final turn.
