Matt McCarty flirts with golf history—eight straight birdies, cruising toward 59 (even 58!)—until a guided tee shot into the trees on the last spoils it. He calls it “a good day” despite the sting, rides the momentum into his upcoming title defense at Black Desert, and recalls his 2019 59 vibes. Calm conditions, hot putter, confidence sky-high.

What a final round. A shot at 59. How are you feeling after that last hole? Yeah. Uh I don’t know. It’s weird to like play that well and feel like that walking off the golf course, but uh yeah, one bad swing. Uh one swing away from a 58 honestly. So tough, but uh yeah, I mean good day obviously. What was going through your mind on that final uh T- shot? I don’t know. I mean, it’s actually uh I feel like similar to being in contention, obviously. Uh it’s kind of the same thing, but yeah, just like kind of tried to guide one and came out of it and shoved it in the trees. So, um but I don’t know. Good day. I was I mean, I didn’t really kind of just hit it close all day, so it was just kind of tapping in for some birdies about nine, but yeah, I just had it cruising. What was mindset going in the final round? just kind of made it look effortless. Yeah, I mean, uh, kind of disappointing. Uh, finished the round the first day and yesterday. Um, and just, uh, yeah, it was tough in the rain yesterday. It was nice. Wasn’t wet to that. I think I was as wet as I’ve been in the day yesterday. Um, but yeah, just wanted to play well and kind of, you know, get some points, have a solid day, and, um, did that. So, mission accomplished. When did you begin kind of maybe leaderboard watching or talking with your caddy that uh uh we didn’t we didn’t mention it until walking off six green said two more but I thought I hit it close on uh four like for eagle and if I made that kind of had in my head then but then you know you never think you’re going to bury the first eight holes on the back nine so um yeah just kind of a slow burn and uh had a chance at it which is fun. any other rounds you can think of that in comparison in your career? I mean, I’ve shot 59 before. Uh, I shot 59 at the Wyoming State Open like right after I turned pro. Birdied the last hole to do that. So, a little different. Um, but yeah, I mean, I don’t know. It’s similar nerves to being in contention and uh, yeah, just one bad swing, but played great. When was that? Do you remember what year? Uh, that would have been right after I graduated, so 21. Yeah. So, I guess you get one of these chances every four years. So, we got to wait a little bit. Um, second group off for the day. You’ve obviously shown that it’s getable and scorable out there. What are these other guys going to be seeing out there today? Yeah, I mean, I think like the golf court like the back nine’s a lot tougher than the front. Um, but teeing off 10 and going out in four under like kind of, but yeah, just not much wind, pretty calm and um, pretty getable. So yeah, I think scores should be low. I haven’t really looked much, but we’ll see.
