They said his swing would never last. That his body would give out years ago. But at 50, Tommy “Two Gloves” Gainey is still proving every expert wrong. In this video, we break down how his unique motion continues to hold up, why it works, and what golfers of any age can learn from his incredible longevity, cause-and-effect mechanics, and unorthodox style that stood the test of time.

00:51 START OF SWING ANALYSIS
06:37 WHAT TO LEARN FROM THIS SWING

Welcome back, Lang Golf Academy members and guests. In yesterday’s video, we got a comment from a channel subscriber, MA 34711. I love how you talk about the golf swing being a game about compensations and making them fit yourself. Please do a review on last week’s senior tour winner, Tommy Gayy. How does that swing work? I think it’s great for the senior tour to have players like him. I personally don’t wear any glove, but I’ve tried two gloves before because of Mr. Gayy. Good old Tommy two gloves. I haven’t heard that name in quite some time and it’s been so long that I didn’t even realize he’s on the senior tour. But what a great swing to watch. Let’s go look at his cause and effect. Talk about his body style because most of you just don’t have the body style to work with this massive forward press and that delayed tilting because of that forward press and you have to navigate that. And most of us couch potatoes who have raised a family and have worked for 40, 50, 60 hours a week doing things you don’t really like. Well, let’s just get going. This isn’t Oprah. Tommy Gayy, two gloves, Tommy on the screen. And you know, I hear it all the time from comments and from subjects that I cover on videos doing cause and effect that those with the severe side bend, the excessive tilt, they’re not going to have a long career. I hear it all the time. But you guys forget that this is their livelihood. They’re there 50, 60, sometimes 70 hours a week practicing, hitting golf balls, working on their body, working out where most of us, I would shy away from this from the average golfer because we don’t have their lifestyles. A, we don’t have their genes that they work with. Not the Levis’s, but you know what I’m saying, the DNA. We don’t have that, but we also don’t have the work ethic that they have and the natural ability to strike the ball like they do. So, if you are watching this channel routinely, you know my theory about strong grips. You know my theory about forward pressing. It’s not ideal for the average golfer. Now, can average golfers get away with it? Sure. You can do anything you want as long as you can repeat it and make the same compensations within reason to give you controlled miss. But what we’re talking about here is if you take a look at this starting position, this is that for press I keep warning everybody about. So, we’re going to draw this in mellow yellow right there. And we also have the shoulder tilting and the centerness of that shoulder tilting. We have to deal with this much for prep. And again, if we take a look at the centerness, we see the centerness of his chest is just ahead of the golf ball. So that’s his low points in terms of his centeredness. Now, his low points in terms of his tilting is way out in front. So you would have to do some severe compensations. One of the compensations I see that some amateurs do make is they get that low point way too far ahead. They split the difference. The center of the chest is here, but then that ball position has shifted way back and they have to get, you know, who’s coming to dinner. The next compensation I do see is one that’s a little less common for the amateurs, but more common for the best in the world is we see their center point kind of stay there, but their tilt very much so down at the impact, pushing their hands out in front, getting that excessive for press, but this only works if you have a very strong grip. So, you take a look at her, his grip. Obviously, it is very strong. And I’ve made multiple videos covering this. So, I can happily say that a majority of my viewers that watch me all the time probably know more about cause and effect than a majority of teaching pros out there, specifically ones that teach methods. So, we’re going to see now the impact. You’re going to see this exaggerated tilting. So, watch the centerness. The centerness doesn’t shift much. So, it’s in the same place. It’s slightly ahead, but this is that tilt I’m talking about right there. We see an extreme amount of tilt, pushing the hands way out in front, getting that forward press even more so, but he can only do this with a strong grip because his body is now helping square that club face more so than his hands. And we see that hand hold on to it. We still well past impact. He still has somewhat of a forward press related to that tilting. So, he’s carrying that forward press over much longer. It only passes through right about here, but look at the amount of tilt. That is noseville for amateur golfers. right there. That’s just asking for trouble. But here we have a guy that’s been playing competitively at the highest level for 30 years. So you telling me that he’s going to go away? What does he have left? Four, five years left in the senior tour. Even if it goes south, he’s got pretty good 30-year career. So let’s break down his cause and effect from down the line. So what we’re going to do is look at an older swing of his, meaning it’s when he was younger. So we see that that club shaft is running pretty close to perpendicular which will put some pressure on his shoulders to remain perpendicular. Now if we take a look here, we do see a loss of shoulder tilt. So if you take a look at these things that are happening, usually good players will get that club head to force their way down to that plane. So there’s the upper plane and we can see that it is forcing its way down because of the compensations. So we lose shoulder tilt. That’s going to bring your hands lower. He’s learned to raise it up. But while he raises it up, the club head still is in a laid-off position to find that secondary plane line. Good players just do this. A lot of this is feel. A lot of this is just you’re DNA to be a golfer. Now, let’s take a look. We got that back brace line. We see the spine angle still stays level, but you take a look at the tilting right past impact. Look at how much tilt. Let’s just do a quick little tilt check. And we know that usually you get 20 to 25°. There is his past impact. and it is at 68 degrees. Let’s go to the top of his swing here and it is at 33 degrees. So, here we have 35 degrees of excess tilt. Now, couch potatoes out there, you try and get that strong grip forward shaft and you make this compensation, this is definitely asking for issues down in your lower back because you just don’t have the DNA to do this. And if you think you do and you had a full-time job and you raised a family, you don’t. Sorry. But let’s just compare this. Let’s go back to that first video because this is his most recent swing. And we’re going to take a look at did we change much as he is now a senior. So there’s our lines. We’re going to take a look and we see this one is just a slight bit toe heavy. So we know we need some room to make all this tilting happen. So if you take a look at those with stronger for shaft, you’ll probably see them set up more on their toes because they need a little bit more room to tilt and and carry that angle down. But let’s take a look at down at impact. most important thing. Do we still at the age of 50s? Let’s get this up in yellow. We see that shoulder tilt is leveled out compared to his spine angle. So, we’re at 32 down at impact. One frame past impact. My goodness, he is still able to have 37° of tilt. So, even though he is aged, he is still quite capable of doing it. So, again, tour pros, they’re outliers. We don’t emulate them. You don’t try and copy this swing because unless you’re built like them, you’re going to run into some issues. And unfortunately, that’s what methods are. They’re built on one good golfer that happens to do it right for him. And they say, “Oh, you know what? Let me just make a bunch of money and release a method and come up with a DVD series to make money while you struggle and find the secret.” There are no secrets. Listen to your body. Hope that helps you. If you have any more recommendations, let me know down in the comment section. Pairs of greens.

What do you think, would you trust your body with a swing like this?
Love Tommy's swing! Thanks for doing this and thanks channel viewer for asking for it!
Man his back is built differently 😂
Can you do Jack Nicklaus?
2 gloves!
Speaking of almost 50 years old, Tiger Woods is 49 years old and turns 50 on december 30, 2025. Tiger just had another back surgery on friday, october 10, 2025. I believe this was Tiger's 7th back surgery !!!!! If you do a swing analysis on Tiger Woods, be sure to include the "back brace line". Do you think that Tiger could have success on the senior tour, or will his physical problems make it impossible to play on the senior tour ?
Thanks for the video. Watching Tommy's swing in real time during the tournament last week was so disorientating. It just didn't look like a winning swing. But, watching your evaluation in slow/stop motion shows how it works for him. He also putts with two gloves. I might try that tomorrow.
Is that Tommy Two Gloves???? What a blast from the………present 😂😂😊
Not long woken up here in England, just watching this makes my back ache, but it shows there's no such thing as one swing for all. It works for him, extremely well, good for him.
I maintained my spine angle until I was about 30 but like Byron Nelson I started coming up out of my shots – I had to because my back couldn't take the strain. Has he ever mentioned having any back problems? Tiger just had his 7th back surgery. Tommy is a freak of nature.
Remember Natalie Gulbis? She retired pretty early because of what this swing did to her back. I recall wondering how long she would be able to keep putting that strain on her back and the next thing I heard she had retired.
I heard "Tommy two gloves" and i though i was gonna see a documentary about some wiseguy who made ppl dissappear🪚🤌🤣 "we dont have their genes, not the Lewis" LOL😂👌
Reminds me of some lpga swings… don't see many guys that can pull this off at any age, let alone 50. Seeing 2 gloves and Tiger hit 50 makes me older than I care to admit…
Great idea to analyse Tommy Gainey. Was a request from a comment in your last video. Wow, you picked it up very fast!
I was seriously just thinking "what ever happened to Tommy Gainey?" Then I see him winning on the Champion's Tour after Monday qualifying what a legend!! Thanks for the analysis I was always curious of Tommy's ability to hit a ball so well!!
Great video, Tony.
I remember Tommy Gainey when he was on the Golf Channel's Big Break. I believe he is the only (or one of very, very few) male contestant to get a PGA Tour card.
By the way, Tommy also had a full-time job before he went pro. That dude used to wrap insulation around hot water heaters for a living. Mad respect for anyone working fulltime and trying to make it in professional golf.
(Um, we won't count any of that funny stuff having to do with that prostitution ring he was involved with back in 2019, because I'm not sure if that counts as a [hand] job or a [blow] job. Are those tax-free jobs?🤔)
I've watched Tommy play a few times and he is an amazing ball striker…someone told me he was a fantastic softball player years ago…even though if I tried to do this I'd end up in a full body cast, I'm always fascinated by his action. Glad to see he's gonna make a mark on the Champion's Tour. Another great video!
Hot take: Champions Tour will look very different in 5-10 years as more regular Tour players will be in the hospital from injuries and not able to play competitions. Thoughts?
Looks gnarly on the back for sure. The body sure is amazing in its wide abilities between people.
Love it
Does your channel have the option to "buy me a coffee" like many others do? I would make use of this if it was offered.
Even pros end up with bad backs. You can stretch, workout, hit tons of balls and still get hurt. In fact it’s almost guaranteed. TG is a unicorn.
