The future of Europe’s Rder Cup captaincy appears firmly in Luke Donald’s hands. After masterminding Europe’s thrilling triumph on American soil in New York, 2 years after guiding the team to glory in Rome, the Englishman has surely earned the right to chase an unprecedented three repeat in 2027. But if Donald decides he’s had enough of the all-consuming role and opts to step aside, who will be next in line to lead team Europe? Justin Rose and Franchesco Molinari are widely viewed as the most likely successors. Molinari’s brother, Eduardo, Europe’s resident stats grew, has already ruled himself out of the running, leaving the door open for the 2018 Open Champion or the 2013 US Open winner to take charge. Another strong contender could be Podrick Harrington, especially with the 2027 Ryder Cup set to be held on home soil at Otterm Manor in Ireland. Harrington endured a tough outing in 2021, overseeing a record 19-9 defeat at Whistling Straits under challenging circumstances. With an aging squad and no European fans allowed due to co restrictions, the Irishman’s captaincy stint came under harsh scrutiny, something many, including his peers, believed deserves redemption. Richard Bland, now competing against Harrington on the senior circuit, told Bunker to see UK he believes the three-time major champion has earned another chance. “I think coming to Ireland, as strong as America will be, they always are. I still think Europe will be huge favorites,” Bland said in front of an Irish crowd, whether it’s an Irish captain or not, we’ll have to wait and see. But I think the US are really going to be up against it. Bland went on to say that Harrington’s struggles in 2021 were largely down to the circumstances. The beating we took at Whistling Straits had a lot to do with not having the fans there. It was tough. Whether Harrington gets another crack at the captaincy, I think he deserves it. With the career he’s had over the last 30 years, he’s earned that shot. Bland also voiced support for another Irishman, Graham McDow, a three-time Ryder Cup winner and fellow Livy golfer. A few things would have to change, Bland said. But if you take the LIIB situation out of it, I think Graham was always lined up for this one. I’m sure he’d love to be captain, and if not, he should definitely be involved as a vice captain. You can see how passionate he is about the Ryder Cup. You need people like that in and around the team, especially in Ireland. Ultimately though, Bland believes it all depends on Luke Donald’s decision. If Luke wants it again, he said, “I don’t think anyone’s going to turn him down.
