Steve Flesch breaks down his “dump and runner” bunker strategy—forget trying to spin it close, focus on smart course management and easier distance control.
🎯 Land it safe, a few steps on the green
🔄 Just enough spin to check slightly
🏃‍♂️ Let it roll out naturally to the hole
📊 Easier to judge than high-spin shots
As Steve explains, this approach works great when you have green to work with, but you’ll need to adjust based on pin position. Sometimes simple beats fancy!

I’m what I call a dump and runner out of the bunkers. I don’t try and impart a ton of spin. I try and impart just enough to where I know it’s going to land, maybe check a little, but then just run out to the hole. I’ve never been the guy who flies it to the hole and try I I find that very difficult to judge. Some may argue the opposite, but to me, I’d rather dump it and run it. And that’s kind of this first pin would be great for that. I would figure out, okay, what do I need to do to land it, you know, a couple steps on and let it trickle out. But now, if we just go over to this pin, I’d have to definitely change my approach.
