THIS week’s peek into Inverclyde’s pictorial past sees us visit Gourock Golf Club.
The club was founded in 1896, at a time when golf was exploding in popularity across Scotland.

Locals interested in the sport arranged for a meeting to be held in the Gamble Institute to consider a proposal to form a golf club in Gourock.
The meeting was advertised in these very pages, and the 22 men who attended on April 22 unanimously adopted the proposal.

The club had its official opening on June 13, 1896, with the course being opened by Lieutenant Duncan Darroch.
Our ‘Then’ picture appeared on the front cover of the golf club’s official handbook in 1967 and show the clubhouse from the practice putting green.
The building sits in the same place today as it did then, but at the time this picture was taken the clubhouse was a relatively new addition to the course.

The club moved into the building in 1964, having spent around £30,000 on its construction.
The club’s previous clubhouse (pictured) was built in 1925 to the design of a member of the club, Mr T. H. Stirling.
The approximate cost including furnishings for the clubhouse was £2,800, and it was still in useable condition in the 1960s, despite the decision being made to move to a new building.
