2025 Magarey Medallist – Tom Lewis Interview

Fresh off winning the 2025 Magarey Medal, Sturt superstar Tom Lewis sits down to talk about his incredible season, the challenges he’s overcome, and what this honour means to him and the Double Blues.

You probably asked this question a lot of times now. How’s it feel to win? Amazing. Incredible feeling. Um, very humbled and honored to achieve the award. Um, yeah, over the last 24 hours been pretty surreal. What was running through your head when you re hit 28 votes and realize the medal was all yours. I was more worried about speaking to be honest. Um, getting up on stage on live TV and not messing up my speech. Um yeah it was a yeah incredible surreal feeling um to yeah gotten there was a goal of mine for a long time. Um so just to yeah just to make it was yeah incredible. Now how does it feel to join the list of 15 st players who have already won the award. Yeah completely honored to be a part of this amazing group. um you know alongside some of the greats of Sanford football as well as St is um it’s very uh amazing. Yeah, just yeah I can’t explain how honored I am to be a part of it. You led the competition with 152 tackles. You average almost eight per game. Do you take pride in winning the ball or stopping opposition? It’s a a bit of both. I think I naturally end up tackling I don’t know. I think it’s just instinctively over the last I think. Yeah, since I’ve been playing footy, I’ve been a yeah, a tackler, but um I felt this year I was able to balance it out a little bit more. I think last year I was averaging more tackles and touches at some point. Um so this year was good to flip it around the other way. Now, you had some setbacks in your career. What advice would you give to the younger players coming through who face challenges or setbacks in their career? Um I just think like I said last night, it’s just it’s going to be a hell of a story. no matter what you go through, um it’s just another page in the book that you have you’re making and currently making. And um at the very end of it, wherever it ends, um it’s going to be an incredible story just to see where you’ve come from, what you’ve overcome. Um you know, I think it it’s a true testament to the character, whatever challenges you face. Um you get knocked down, you get back up again. Um, and that never give up mentality. I think holds in goodstead in football and in in life as well. I think this is the hard hardest question you’ve got. Why don’t you comment about the Hulk at the McGary? Are you secretly embarrassed or secretly in loving loving it? You uh you obviously um look after yourself in the gym a bit too. If you’d like just look at this picture here.
