When you go golfing in Montana, fending off a goose from the sand trap is not uncommon. But what about when a huge mountain lion appears in the tree next to your ball? That’s next-level hazard.
A video circulating on TikTok captures a group of golfers playing somewhere near what we are told is Three Forks. The video shows a group of golfers after they hit their ball close to a body of water and a tree. But in place of a clean chip shot, they discovered a full-grown mountain lion lounging above the ball.
You can hear someone off-camera chuckling nervously. Because really, what else do you do when your chip shot also becomes a life-and-death matter?
@cm4617 Not your normal golfing hazard, I gotta keep it in the fairway next time.#montana #montanagolf #mountainlion #pinggolf ♬ original sound – cmJust Another Day in Montana
Montana golf courses don’t mess around. But when the geese and ducks are crapping all over the green, or a black bear isn’t waddling across the fairway, this is one state where your backswing can be critiqued by wild animals.
This isn’t even the first time wildlife has interrupted play on the fairway. A couple of years ago, a young grizzly bear wandered onto the Stevensville golf course. The locals lost their minds. And since anyone who’s played long enough around here has at least one “bear on the back nine” story.

This mountain lion moment is one more reminder that in Montana, you’re always one foot in nature, even when you wear golf spikes. So the next time your ball hits a place near a set of trees, maybe just… take the drop. The cat’s not moving.
