South African star Garrick Higgo shared his mindset heading into the final round after another solid day on the course. “It was quite a good fight,” he said. “Golf never really goes your way, so I just stayed patient and tried to roll the ball as good as I can.”
Confidence and controlled aggression define his approach: “I’m going to play as if I’m behind tomorrow — be as aggressive as I can and make as many birdies as I can.” Higgo, already a winner in both Europe and on Tour, knows the formula: “I never really have a number, but I always know I just want to make more birdies.”
The 24-year-old also showed his lighter side, joking about his signature hair: “It’s not a barber anymore — I’ve been upgraded to a salon now… it gets really floofy, so I put stuff in it so it doesn’t go all afro.”
Yeah. Derek, how would you kind of assess the round today? Pretty good. Um, I’d say it was quite a good fight. Um, I knew it wasn’t going to be easy. I mean, it’s never easy. Golf never really goes your way. So, I just stayed patient and try to put good swings on it and try to roll the ball as good as I can. What was What was working best for you today in your game, you feel like? I don’t know. I I don’t know. I think I I hit it pretty good again. um made some good saves, but I think I just stayed patient and then just let it come to me. So, is that is that kind of big like as you said, staying patient, just letting letting the round come to you instead of maybe trying to have to force things sometimes? Yeah, I mean I think all of us know that. Um it’s just it’s a tough game and this week it seems to I’ I’ve seem to be playing well. So, um I think all of us always try and stay patient. Um, some weeks it’s easier than other weeks. I know this might be an obvious question, but does it help the fact that you have you have a win under your belt this year? You know how to how to get it done in the in the closing stretches of a tournament in the Yeah, I mean, I’ve obviously won in Europe a few times, too. Wherever you win, um, you know, I don’t know, all of all of us love competing, so all of us tomorrow will go out and try our best. And um I’m going to play as if I’m behind tomorrow and be as aggressive as I can be and make as many birdies as I can. So is that a strategy that you’ve used before? Like you’re just something I I don’t know. I I never really have a number, but I always know that I just want to make more birdies. Um so yeah, just I I enjoy being aggressive, so this kind of course fits well with me. Can you talk a little bit about the bunker situation at 15? Have you Have you seen anything like that before or I haven’t had I have had the opposite of that before at Sea Island a couple years ago. I was playing with Brian Gay on 18. He hit it in the bunker, Greenside bunker and I hit it after him in his pitch mark. Um which is the opposite of this. And I I had to play that one because it was already like that before I hit. Um this one I hit first. So I apparently was entitled to the lie that I had. So yeah. in Puntaana earlier this year. We talked a little bit about your flow, your hair, and you said that you hate going to the barber. Have you been to the barber since then? Yeah, I’ve cut my I’ve I it’s not a barber. I’ve been upgraded to go to the salon now, apparently. Yeah. Um Did you feel pressure to do that? Yeah, it was too long. Um I cut it about this much. So, do you still travel with your own product? Yeah, it gets really floofy. So, I put stuff in it so it doesn’t go all afro, you know. Did the salon style it a certain way? No, no, no. I’m not that far yet. Yeah. All right, Garrett. Thanks. Thank you.
