There wasn’t just one 54hole event lighting up Scotland’s fairways last week. While some of the world’s top golfers battled brutal conditions at the Dunhill Lynx Championship with Storm Amy turning the iconic trio of St. Andrews, Carnusti and Kings Barnes into a windswept war zone. Another prestigious tournament was unfolding quietly a few hours north up in the Highlands in far calmer conditions. The Highlands Golf Links ProAM took center stage. played annually across three of Scotland’s most scenic courses, Royal Dorna, Narren, and Castle Stewart. The event is a highlight of the Scottish PGA calendar and this year carried a 6,500 lb first prize. The winner, none other than LIIV Golf’s Richard Bland. While 17 LIIV players teed it up at the Dunhill, Bland, who resigned as DP World Tour membership, opted for a different challenge. The 52-year-old Englishman made the most of it, firing rounds of 65, 67, and 65 to finish 16 underpar for strokes clear of Paul O’Hara from Hamilton Golf Club. I hadn’t even heard of the tournament before, Bland admitted with a smile. Some friends mentioned it to me, asked if it fit my schedule, and it did. I just thought it would be good in the offseason to get a scorecard in my hand and play a little bit of competitive golf. It wasn’t the be all and end all, but it was great to get out there and enjoy some Lynx golf in Scotland. And enjoy it he did. For 2 and 1/2 days, the weather was almost too good to be true. Clear skies, sunshine, and barely a whisper of wind. Just a stunning place to play golf once like that. Bland said, “We had great fun, and those three courses are just incredible.” Bland had some prior experience. He played Narin as an amateur three decades ago and Castle Stewart in past Scottish Opens, but Royal Dorna was largely new territory. Even so, he lit up the course with some fearless shotmaking, though he was quick to downplay the lowcoring. We played a lot of forward TE’s, so the courses were short, he explained. I was hitting driver everywhere. In an LIV event, I’d probably be a bit more conservative. When you’re playing for your spot and your livelihood, there’s pressure. Here, I could go a bit gung-ho. If it worked, great. If not, I wasn’t losing sleep over it. Maybe I should play more like that on LIV. He joked that Bland’s Highland victory came on the heels of what he described as a golf trip of a lifetime to Hogs Head in Ireland, joined by friends, including Chelsea legend John Terry. It’s that kind of relaxed, joyful golf that he envisions embracing more of once he steps away from professional competition. For now though, the veteran is still riding the momentum of a remarkable late career renaissance. Since joining LIV Golf, Bland has not only posted solid finishes, but also captured two senior major titles last year. Proof that his game remains sharp well into his 50s. Reflecting on his journey, Bland remains convinced he made the right call in joining LIIV. For my golf, my family, my life outside of golf. It’s the best decision I ever made. He said it was a risk because I had to play well, but thankfully I’ve managed to do that. Hopefully, there’s still a bit more left in the tank. It seems that for Richard Bland, the fire still burns bright, and Scotland’s tranquil Highlands just witnessed another chapter in his remarkable second act.
