hey gang,

super rookie golfer here. thoughts/opinions needed!

i haven’t progressed to actually keeping score to figure out a handicap just yet but im making decent progress with my dumpster graphite club set (straight drives, solid putts, need to work on my irons though). i am considering re-gripping them myself to use for another year.

BUT, as every golfer does, i have my eyes peeled for a new starter set. im thinking budget for 10-14 clubs (+/-golf bag) to be ~$500.

my buddy told me to look at callwaypreowned.com but not really sure what to snag.

i saw this deal from Vice on their Boost Starter Set, $560 for 9 graphite clubs. is it worth the price?!

You can get a full bag and set of clubs from Costco or Dick’s Sporting Goods for like $400

Seen good reviews and the price is good

personally speaking, i’d stick with a company that’s established in the beginner set game: strata, top flite, etc at a better price point and have been in the club business for decades

while i’m unfamiliar with vice’s hard goods, I have to imagine there’s a reason they’re knocking $500 off the set

  4. Get the Costco Callaway edge set. Don’t ask more questions. Costco return policy for full refund when you want to upgrade your set later

  5. I got this set personally to start and it’s a solid I did get new grips because I have bigger hands and have been slowly updating the clubs but I personally like it

  6. My buddy started with strata a few years ago. Still uses his5 hybrid from that set lol. But as someone else mentioned, go to Costco and get the edge set

I’ve heard nothing but good with the vice clubs, I think it’s worth it at that price tbh I’m eyeballing some vice clubs myself

I would consider going to like PGA superstore and getting fitted so that you know what type of clubs would be best for you. When I went in, they were able to match me up with a really good set of game improvement, clubs, and it has definitely made a world of a difference over the last season.

All the reviews are good, personally I get their 7i because I broke my callaway one from costco, i hate it to be honest it’s like hitting a brick i can hit it ok and every now and then ill get a real smooth better like hit out of it most of the time it’s like hitting a tree root, I still carry it in my bag but I always prefer my 8 or 6 I would definitely consider the edge set from costco plus their wedges and golf bag instead 🤷🏻‍♂️

This is my big issue with direct to consumer goods. There aren’t any middlemen and resellers, so they are able to set an arbitrary MSRP and jack the price up and make it seem like a good deal. At the end of the day they are still able to profit at the 50% markdown, so what’s the true value? You see it all the time in the rifle scope market. A company like Arken or DNT hits the market with a wild MSRP to sale price ratio, touting premium quality at a budget price. Except when the equipment is put to the same test as a premium option, the buyer is left lacking and stuck with a product that isn’t worth 50% of what they paid. I’m not a stick or even a good golfer, but what I’ve learned over the years is that if you sacrifice quality you will end upside down and replacing the “deal” with the equipment you should have bought in the first place. Sorry for the rant, it’s your money and you should spend it how you see fit. **TL;DR** I think you should buy a set of Sim 2 Max irons, a driver and fairway wood from Callaway Pre-owned. The holiday season is coming and there will be deals to be had. I think you can do better than these.
