Golf Central on YouTube is brought to you by the new Chrome Tour Golf Ball from Callaway. It’s one of my favorite tour stops. Um, not only because of, you know, the fan enjoyment and the the energy that they bring and the golf, but also just the culture and the food and and just making it a full-on vacation out here. So, I uh I always look forward to this trip every year and um I’m glad to be back. You were at the Ryder Cup just a little over a week ago. Curious if you’ve had any time to hang out or decompress since Beth Paige. Not really. Um that week goes by so quickly and and a lot of things are happening and obviously the the end result wasn’t what we wanted. So you know coming over here a few days early. It’s just kind of been a continuation of of a lot of adrenaline. Um but you know after this week I’ll have a little bit of time off to really reflect and look back at the season and and uh see what I need to you know keep doing well and and keep needing to do better. new golf course this year at Yokohama Country Club. Can we just get some thoughts on the course? Yeah, it’s it’s honestly an incredible golf course. The greens are some of the best greens I think we’ve we’ve played on on tour. And just the way the design of the golf course with a lot of bold greens, sloped edges, it makes the green complexes a lot smaller than than what we see. So, it’ll be a great test. Obviously, we have some weather tomorrow and a lot of lot of wind and some rain. So, uh it’ll be a great test. I think throughout the week there’s a lot of mix of of long holes and short holes uh throughout this golf course. You just mentioned the weather with a typhoon coming in. Is there anything you’re going to change about your game? Uh no. I I think, you know, the last couple days of prep, the weather’s been so nice that you kind of get used to seeing a golf course for the first time, pick your lines, and I think you just have to adjust a lot tomorrow and um be ready really to to hit any club off the tea because it’s going to play very, very different than what we’ve seen the first couple days. What is the one thing you want to figure out most during the fall before January? Uh I would say there’s two. I’d say, uh one would be putting. I mean, that’s an obvious, uh, you know, inconsistency in my game. Um, and just trying to figure out how to just roll a couple more putts in, have a little bit more speed, and um, two would probably be just getting my body right so I can hit my cuts again. You know, numbers wise, it looks fine, but just comfort level. Um, I want to be able to step up to to certain approach shots and know where where it’s going to be going. So, I’m going to have some time off, which will be nice, and uh, hopefully put that time to use. You said before the RDER Cup that you wanted the fans to go crazy and you wanted there to be chaos. Um, do you feel that the way that the fans behave crossed the line and do you feel any responsibility for the way they behaved or regret what you said before the competition? Well, I I think we’ve taken what I said a little out of context. You know, I I think Ryder Cups are meant to have a lot of energy, right? And I I think me saying the word chaos, I I didn’t mean for them to be rude, right? So, like that’s not on on me, I believe, for me to take credit for people being rude. I think what I meant was like I wanted energy, right? You wanted people to be pride and be proud of the country and the countries they’re rooting for. Um, so I I don’t think, you know, me saying one word, everyone listened and then I don’t think I have the power to do that, you know, amongst people. I think PE fans can can do and say what they want sometimes and and it it probably crossed a line out there um and and you know it wasn’t in my groups but definitely you know what what people were hearing. So I would say you know yeah it’s there there’s a line that needs to be drawn I believe but I think that’s what’s so different and unique about golf is that we hear nearly everything what people say because people have access to be so close to us. Um, you look at a lot of other sports, you don’t really hear much. You know, things are said, but golf has that different aspect to it. So, I think we have to learn how to find that that division um of what’s appropriate and what’s not. I go from it’s possibly two of the most emotional weeks for me, right? Uh being part of a Ryder Cup is something so unique, so special, especially winning away. It’s it’s incredible. It’s an incredible feeling. But then coming to Spain, an event that matters so much to me, hoping to to win for the fourth time, uh, hard to put it into words, right? It’s may not be the biggest event in the world, but to me is is one of the biggest. And what’s it like been returning to Europe after winning that away Rder Cup? It is very weird being congratulated for something that I didn’t just do myself, right? like when I get thank yous and congratulations is I wish we were all together because we all we all deserve it, right? It wasn’t just me. I only contributed three points out of 15, right? So, uh and all of those three with a partner. So, it’s an odd feeling, but it’s very nice to be able to give that to to European golf. And having a home event so close after doing that, is that a huge positive for you in your game? What can you do this week? I would say after watching Bob McIntyre win in Scotland, I would say it’s a huge positive. Yeah. Yeah. Uh from going from having the crowd against us to having everybody cheering for me, it’s going to be very special. Uh massive difference, massive just a position, but but beautiful in a different way, right? So, uh I’m looking forward to it. Looking forward to hopefully getting that fourth Spanish Open. Um and again, hoping to actually just perform well in front of this crowd. They’ve been they’ve been so good to me. They’ve been so supportive that uh the least I can do is give it my best shot and hopefully I’m I’m there on Sunday to win it. Yeah. You came so close to your fourth last year. A fourth would see you surpassed Sevy, one closer to the record. What’s motivating you most this week? I would say exactly that, right? Trying to get that fourth uh getting one step closer to eventually possibly get into a number six. Right. I was able to get three very very fast and it’s never easy and I’m hoping I can get them. I can do it sooner than later. But, uh, just focusing on that, right? Hopefully getting that fourth and getting past heavy. And what can you tell us about the course? What stands out to you most? It’s it’s an old school design, right? It’s it’s not long. It’s small with very small greens. And it’s supposed to be a lot narrower with a lot of trees and unfortunately due to weather in the last few years, some very hot summers, some very vast storms and winter because Madrid gets both. They lost quite a few of the trees that you need on this golf course to be playing as hard as it can. And even then, this is unfortunately become a little bit too short. So, if we get the weather that we’re supposed to have with very little wind and just sunny, uh you’re going to see some low scores, right? So, and in every part of the game needs to be good. But in my case, being as narrow as it is, just having a good week of the tea is is paramount to be able to have a good week. Yeah, it’s been nice. It’s uh even, you know, um sitting in the players lounge this morning, having my breakfast, people coming up wanting to talk about it and uh it’s been pretty cool. It’s nice. I always love coming back playing in Europe and um you get to see all my my my old friends and um yeah, it’s nice nice to feel the love. Now you’ve had a week to reflect. Are you ready to go again or has it not quite sunk in yet? Yeah, like it’s uh look, I’ve had an amazing week. I think it’s it’s obviously what happened is is pretty cool and um you know what’s what dreams are made of really. Uh I’m sure there’s going to be a little come down at some stage. Um but it’s nice to be back on the horse this week here in Spain. I think uh you know it’s nice to get back out there and competing quickly. Um try and forget a little bit about what happened. Uh but you know uh it will be hard. It’s you know something that I I never foraw myself doing. Um, so you don’t really know uh how you’re going to handle it, but you know, I just like I said the week of Ryder Cup, I just be myself and and see how it goes. Well, your RDER Cup teammate Tron Ram is here, the former champion, Anal Haglo, is here. It’ll be have a lot of Spanish support. What do you think it will take to win this week? Uh, it’ll take some good golf, I think. Um, you know, I I haven’t uh I haven’t done much practice over the last few days, so I’ll get and do some this afternoon. And um if we can get through Thursday with a decent round, you never know. But, uh, yeah, it’s it’s going to take, look, there’s a great there’s a great field here. There’s a lot of good players. I think, you know, it’s, uh, it’s a tricky golf course. You know, you need to be really on your game. You need to have control of your ball. So, yeah, it’ll take a good golfer to win around here. And you’re on the course earlier today. What stands out for you here? You just need that. There’s the roof is quite thick this year, and you just need to hit it in the fairways and hit the greens. It’s uh, it’s an old school golf course. It’s like um, it’s quite refreshing to play actually. You don’t you don’t have to you’re not you don’t have to drive it 350 yards and you know um it’s nice you need to hit it in play and you need to be precise. [Music]
