The wait is almost over! Tiger Woods is finally set to trade in his sidelines role for the fairways, marking his highly anticipated return to competitive golf in TGL Season 2.
The second season of the indoor golf league is set for Dec. 28, and after months of rehab following Achilles surgery, the 15-time major champion will make his comeback on Jan. 13.
And the highly anticipated return to competitive golf just got even more exciting. According to ESPN, Woods’ Jupiter Links Golf Club is set to face off against Rory McIlroy’s Boston Common Golf in one of TGL Season 2’s most anticipated matchups.
Woods and Rory McIlroy, the two co-founders of TGL, are set to face off in a primetime showdown on Sunday, March 1, airing live on ESPN at 9 p.m. ET, right after the PGA Tour’s Cognizant Classic wraps up.
The league’s debut season attracted all eyes, drawing celebrities, athletes and fans from across industries. This time, TGL promises an even more immersive experience.
“TGL returns for Season 2 with an elevated experience for fans at SoFi Center and those watching at home,” stated Mike McCarley, founder and CEO of TMRW Sports and TGL, per ESPN.
“We worked with our partner at ESPN on an enhanced schedule for our second season that includes TGL’s broadcast network debut on ABC,” he had added.
Last season, TGL’s $9 million winning prize pool was claimed by Atlanta Drive GC, featuring Patrick Cantlay, Lucas Glover, Billy Horschel, Justin Thomas and Nick Dunlap.
McIlroy’s Boston squad earned $1.5 million, while Woods’ Jupiter Links finished fifth, taking home $1.75 million.
What’s new in TGL Season 2?
This isn’t your typical golf league. It’s a bold blend of traditional play and cutting-edge tech, all happening indoors at the sleek SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Each squad features four players, but only three compete per match, adding a tactical twist that keeps fans guessing.
The season kicks off on Dec. 28, with defending champions Atlanta Drive GC taking on New York Golf Club at 3 p.m. ET on ABC. The regular season will feature 15 matches, followed by playoffs for the top four teams, and culminating in a best-of-three SoFi Cup Finals on March 23-24.
And if you’re wondering what makes TGL different, look no further than the Hammer Rule. It’s a game-changing twist that enables teams to double the value of a hole.
Jupiter Links GC makes its season debut on Jan.13 against New York GC at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN, while McIlroy’s Boston Common GC kicks off earlier on Jan. 2 against Los Angeles GC.
Most matches land on Monday and Tuesday nights, but come late February, the schedule heats up with back-to-back matchups leading into the playoffs.
Why does this matter?
This isn’t just about Big Cat returning to competitive golf, but the evolution that the event brings with it after facing so much heat last season. TGL, co-founded by Woods and McIlroy, is pushing golf into new territory by blending tradition with tech in a way that feels more aligned with modern audiences.
It’s stadium-style golf with primetime energy, and the March 1 showdown between the two co-founders is exactly the kind of moment that could turn casual viewers into lifelong fans.
As McCarley puts it, “TGL is golf reimagined.”
And with Tiger back in the mix, the stakes and the excitement just got a whole lot higher.
