What happens when you mix Aylex, Gavin, and an unhealthy obsession with Lee Zii Jia’s Backhand Drop? You get this hilarious (but surprisingly educational) transformation session where Aylex teaches Gavin how to slice, flick, and finesse just like the Malaysian badminton beast himself. From shanks to sharp shots, Gavin goes from “oops” to “oof that was clean” in 20 minutes flat. Stick around till the end to see the epic before-and-after — Gavin might just be Lee Zii Jia’s long-lost clone.

I have a request. Okay. Can I play against you in singles in an 11-point game? What the hell? This is a big smash. Today we’re here with Gavin. He’s been playing bon for 5 years now and he’s trained with coaches before. And today you want to learn how to have a beautiful backhand straight drop. Let’s take a look at your backhand drops first and let’s see how we can fix it up. [Music] First of all, what do you think’s wrong with your backhand drop? I think I’m dropping a little bit too high. And what if I drop it too high? I allow the opponent to just net kill at the front court. So, the first thing we need to resolve is you hitting it consistently every time. The reason why you’re missing a lot is because your swing is using too many large muscle groups. If you were to make your swing as small as possible, what would it look like? Like just like this. That’s your smallest swing. Yeah. Okay, so the smallest possible swing. What I’m trying to help you understand right now is how the contact point works on this shot. Right? So technically, if I wanted to hit just a shot with my small swing possible, I could just do this. I’ll just use your wrist. Right? This is where the shot happens. Let me show you some backhand drops just using this. What other sports are you good at? I play a lot of golf. Golf and bon is actually very similar in terms of a contact point sport. In golf, when you use large muscle groups too much, it changes the variation of how you come down, right? So the large muscle group we just use as a carrying movement. But when we come down, how we really control how we contact the ball is still mainly in this area, right? So same thing for Babson. Right? Now you’re using your whole large muscle group to turn and try to hit the bird. So when you do a bad turn, the variation is so far off and you miss, right? First of all, we need to start from the small shot first. So, start with just focus on how can I contact this bird clean every time and then we’ll focus on carrying this through. Okay, the first let’s try hitting a few shots. I really want you to focus on hitting the bird. You’re not pushing the bird or like hitting a perfect shot. You have to actually hit the bird in the right direction. Yeah, let’s try doing that first. So, that swing, your intention was not to hit the bird. What I mean by hit the bird is you have to actually hit the bird, not push the bird. Okay. I want you to contact the bird. Okay. Good. Yeah. Just hit it every time like that. Good. So, that one is like that one that one you just missed is not a hit. It’s like a push. It’s stuck on your racket. Right. This feeling we’re trying to get is every time it touches the racket, it just needs to bounce out right away. We need speed on our shot. Okay. Good. Now, let’s try adding a bit a little bit more speed. So, let’s do something like this. So, we want to hit it now. Okay. Instead of like that, that one is pushing the bird. Okay? Just focus on hitting the bird right now. Down. Don’t worry about hitting it close. I just want clear contact on the shot to get consistency. Hit with your wrist and your fingers. Okay. Good. That one’s perfect. Good. Good. Try imagining you’re hitting at the tip of your racket. Tip of the racket. Yeah. So, what this is going to do is this is going to help you control a lot more with your fingers. Okay. Cuz it’s a more delicate part of your racket. Okay. This is how you’re hitting right now. So, imagine if I locked my wrist and just use my big muscle groups. You’re kind of hitting like that big muscle group. I want you to practice hitting like this. Getting used to how to how to use this part. It’s okay if you’re not hitting super accurately, but you got to know how to hit with just this part of your racket. Okay. All right. Good. Yeah. Stick your arm straight. Good. Good. Very good. Perfect. Good. These are all very good. Yes. What we can do now is we can swing bigger, but at the contact point, we still want to imagine no matter what we’re hitting the bird, but you can slow it down a little bit more. But no matter what, you have to contact the bird. Okay? So, let me show you a few backhand drops where we do that. So, this is earlier we were just hitting it down like this, right? With our fingers. And then if I added in my whole swing, it would look like this, right? That’s the That’s the shot we’re trying to do. We are hitting the bird. But now, how do we slow it down? We still do the same thing, but we still have to contact the bird like that, but we just slow down at the last second. And then it becomes a fast drop. But no matter what, we’re contacting it. Okay. Good. It’s okay. Good. That was a lot better. The fast to slow, right? I think I’m using a lot more wrist movement now. So now what you need to do is because your shots are going all over the place is you need to control your shots. And how you do that is you need to bring more sensitivity into your fingers cuz right now that’s how you control the direction, right? You have all this movement down. Now I really want to feel that your fingers and the tip of your racket is controlling which direction it’s hitting at the last second. Okay. Good. Good. Good. Beautiful. You can try um carrying a little bit more. So, right now you’re trying to hit perfect shots. So, what you’re going to do for this is same thing, but if you wanted to have accuracy each time, you’re not only hitting with your wrist cuz it’s going to go all over the place. You want to still go fast, but you’re carrying through more. Okay? So, the follow through. Let me show you one more. Good. Remember, we have to right now you’re Do you hear your sound and also your hand feel? You’re not really hitting the bird, right? You’re brushing it or it’s pushing it. Hit it first. [Music] Okay. So, what do you feel about your shot right now? uh less more confident than before, but I think it’s definitely something I need to practice a lot more and build up the the muscle memory and the feeling for the wrist movement. Okay. So, one thing is like right now what we’re practicing right now, if you see me practice this, I actually don’t hit it perfect. So, my back end is actually really good compared to most players. But when we’re practicing multi like this, I don’t hit it that good as well cuz first of all, we never practice back end in this scenario. like it. We’re never going to get such a floating shot and come over here and hit like a shot like that. So, how about this? Let’s actually switch this backhand drop shot to practice this block. So, what we’re going to do is he’s going to come up here. He’s going to come up do like a net middle block and then we’re going to push here and he’s going to come up and just block down. Okay. Okay. Something like that. Let’s give it a try. Okay. So, can you hit a drive? I’ll I’ll try. Try Let’s try hitting drives first. Okay. You’re not in position to hit drives. If you’re not in position to hit drives, you won’t be in position to hit blocks. You need to get here faster so you can hit a drive in front of you. It’s never behind you. Good. Good, good, good, good. Okay, now same thing but at the last moment, same thing as like our drop before you hold it with a fast swing and it becomes a block. Okay, so the swing still needs to be fast but it becomes a block. Okay, good. Good. See, you didn’t have enough speed on that, right? Every shot needs to be fast. Too slow. That one’s really good. Okay. It doesn’t matter if it’s far or anything. Speed is going to put them out of position. Okay. Good drive. So, this lesson has slightly deviated from what we started with. But anyway, do you have any final questions for this? I have a request. Okay. Can I play against you in singles in an 11-point game? What the hell? You can play against Shia in 11 game. Yeah, go. We’ll be using our Air301 Shuttle Cox, our Shuttle Cox of choice for this channel. If you buy it, we do get some commissions, so it helps support us to make more videos for you guys. Also, the birds are good. Affiliate link down below. Here you go. What the hell? This such a big smash. Why we watch from this angle? So random, this guy He’s like so bad and not bad at the same time. [Music] Thank you. Merry Christmas. Wow. Good shot. Ah, outside. Oh, good shot. You almost had me there. Oh, what the I’ve never seen anyone clear the roof like that. outside. Good game. Good game. Thank you. Okay, Gavin, that was actually pretty interesting. I should have watched you play from the beginning, but your biggest problem in Babson right now is you don’t know what your problem is. cuz um what you have a really unique problem that I’ve I don’t think I’ve yet seen is um I would say there’s difference. You’re a very athletic person. Okay. Like um Lea is naturally a very athletic person. So that’s he I would say compared to other players, he uses less skill and more relies on his athleticism. If we were to rank our three athleticisms, I would say he’s like a nine. I’m a seven. Like our natural athleticism and you’re like a sixth. Okay. Cuz um would you agree? Yeah. Yeah. People who are naturally more athletic can actually rely more on their athleticism than their skill. So I think you have a lot of potential in bon, but right now you’re focusing on the wrong things, right? Cuz you have like just this much explosive power that you need to learn how to use. So I think next time that you come in, we’ll work on how to find opportunities for you to win points instead of focusing on like these technical shots like this. Yeah, it’s very very unique player. But uh if you guys enjoy this video, make sure you like, comment, subscribe. Let us know what you think his problems are. And we’ll see you in the next video.

When is the Lee Zii Jia backhand smash tutorial. Bro's movement looks like Loh Kean Yew somehow but a bit dumbed down 7/10
We have the same 'unique' problem…I came from tennis and, being a really quick and aggressive net player, I carried that explosiveness into badminton, and my technique in badminton is just horrid. I am just getting by in my first 2 months of playing purely through athleticism as well.
One word "RAHHH"
Love the video
Wait the participant is so good😮 I need his WeChat 😏
Woah I saw this guy at hidilao 😎😎😎 he’s crazyyyy
Really nice advice about starting with only wrist. I remembered seeing a tutorial by Kenichi Tago teaching only wrist for beginner.
thanks for the tutorial
Yep totally agree. He's super quick and powerful but doesn't use placements to his advantage because he can usually Bully his opponents 😂. I'm the opposite so I always need to conserve energy and try to exploit weaknesses, using explosive power only where needed cuz I got no stamina rip
real ones know this is a reupload
Can u make a video where u teach how to defend the smash because I can't and i will learn
This vid helped a lot Aylex since my backhand is the weakest shot, and it helped me be like Lee Zii Jia🔥
i feel like he's too stiff with his movements
Can you teach me to aylex in footwork pls
Thanks for the vid
Yeah he is really athletic but it seems that he is also quite stiff while moving around
8:53 Abey saale.. 😆
Thanks for the reupload! Now i can watch their game!
As i've said in the original video, his footwork is good but his hitting action should be his focus for now.
Bro 2 vids in a day that's really awesome I didn't expect this video but it really helps us and I'm weak in backhand tho btw nice vid again bro ❤❤❤❤
Will you ever give me the giveaway? Ever?
Bro is good but his footwork needs some work
I think aylex needs more cardio
Thanks so much for the reupload. This was an awesome video
Gavin > Shourya > Aylex 🤣🤣
He needs to work on control and footwork. But quite decent!
This will be very helpful… thank you. 🙂
AYLEX IS PHAT
it helped me improved ty 🙂
Damn aylex
As much as I know, you’re one of the best (if not the best) badminton coach😊
Or tho his footwork and smash is kinda wrong a little bit however his SMASH IS CRAZY
I rate his movement 7/10, cause I rate myself 6/10 😅
No comment lol perfect video
Hope he incoperates this in his games
shoraya is like a 3/10
I would rate his movement 5.5/10❤
I like the way Gavin positioned for the backhand in the game with Shourya. The tutorial really works!!
I don't think Gavin is more naturally fit, he is fit because he works out outside of badminton. Not a whole lot but it's obvious. Badminton players really neglect this, thinking they can progress infinitely without hitting the gym and doing cardio, both important for both sexes. I noticed the difference just a couple of weeks after I started doing it. There are some benefits:
– Being badminton-specific-strong allows you to rely less on joints, reducing wear and decreasing recovery time. You can play more frequently.
– Having good badminton-cardio (like HIIT) allows you to play longer sessions AND longer rallies/sets. You will arrive at the shuttle with less difficulty. You can be the best player in the world that if you can't get to the shuttle comfortably you will probably compromise the shot. Reaching the shuttle in this state is much better for you in the long term, you will learn faster.
– Faster shots are naturally less forgiving, getting you used to those will translate in some improvements in other shots
– Everybody will like your ooga booga gym-wide sounding smashes eheh
im not the one to judge he is way better than me the problem for his spikes is when spiking he leans back too much😅
it all love tho
Bro wtf i like watched your 4 videos of like this in a row and i play shots like advanced and already knew that just do that wrist and before i saw i video of backhand lift cross court i already knew how to do it broo i still lose cuz i just dont have that speed in me😭…well i never went to academy so never got any speed training 🫡
Could start from backhand clear, the drop being a derivative – clear hits solid, drop slices
Is there a playlist for these kinds of videos where you help fix someone's game.
Thank you,my backhand shot getting better and more control 😊
