Beckley, W. Va. – It came down to the final 18 holes at the Glade Springs Resort as the Wheeling University Men’s Golf team wrapped up the 2025 MEC Men’s Golf Championships. The Cardinals would equal their effort from last season, finishing fourth overall, putting up a 906 across the 54 holes of play. The Cardinals had their first MEC All-Tournament team honoree since the 2019 season as they look to build on their success into the off-season.
The MEC All-Tournament team honoree was Zak Collins, who finished his best round of the tournament shooting a 72 (E). Collins entered the day in the top five of the event, and started out strong with a birdie on hole one. However, he added three strokes over the next two holes And had to work his way back into the round. He would hit par on the next hole and immediately got that stroke back with a birdie on hole five. It would be one of two birdies for Collins on the front nine, as he finished out with a birdie on hole nine to bring his score to +1 heading into the back nine. The final nine holes would be his best performance of the day as, after bogeying on hole 10, he would only add one more stroke the rest of the way. He would even his score with a birdie on hole 11 and, would add two more in the round . His final birdie would come on hole 17, and it was enough to get him to even and help him tie for fourth Ib the team event to earn a spot on the all-tournament team.
Behind Collins, the biggest round three performance would come from Elias Ekenes-Fosback, who dominated over the event’s front nine. He would hit three birdies on the front nine, with his first coming on hole two. He would hit par on four of the remaining five holes on the front nine, putting him at -1 as he headed to the back nine. He kept his momentum going to start that back nine, shooting back-to-back pars, followed by a birdie on hole 12 to move to -2 for the round. In the end, he would finish the final six holes shooting +4, and brought his final score to 75 for the round. The other Cardinal to crack the top 20 was Sean Dobson, who finished 14th with a three-day score of 81. It was his highest mark of the tournament so far, with his best showing coming on the back nine, where he shot +2, hitting seven pars in the round to finish out his tournament.
The final Cardinal to compete on day three was Troy Loughry, who put together his best round of the event, shooting a 74. He would hit one birdie on the front nine, and finished +2 over the first nine holes. However, on the back nine, he would find his consistency, hitting par on each of the nine holes to finish off his tournament. It was enough for Loughry to hold his top 20 spot, finishing tied for 18th overall.
The Wheeling University Men’s Golf team now heads into the break as they prepare to take the course once again in spring.
