I try to actually keep my head in the picture frame behind the golf ball, you know, like this. We want to do that without dropping your shoulders. The dropping your shoulders gets you stuck back here and underneath. See where I am? Swing to me. That’s more of what you need to see. Look at that ball flight, guys. [Applause] [Music] This is a big big topic, okay? And I want to make sure you understand this clearly. Whenever I see somebody set up with a wedge and they’re right in the middle of their stance and that right hand looks like this, oh gee, I wonder what’s going to happen when the right hand has to reach up for that driver. It’s going to be exponential. Okay, so here’s the thing. People with a strong grip with a right hand, especially trail hand to me, I actually, even though it shuts the face, the good swing, the good swing where you let it go, will hook. The bad swing is the one where you’re hanging on for dear life because you know it’s shut. Your subconscious is like, if I let this go, I’m I’m over here. So, what happens is the golfer that has that right hand over here, then hangs on for dear life that way. Couple things I want to work on with you. Okay. I’m going to hold the club your way and I’m actually going to literally watch this. I’m going to make my swing with your with your grip. Ready? Isn’t that unbelievable? That’s with my Watch this. I’ll do the exact same thing. Watch the difference in the ball flight. What’ I tell you? That ball wouldn’t even get off the ground. It’s a low hook. Here’s the exact same swing. You guys watch. I’m not even going to exaggerate. And look at my right hand on top. Same person. I’m going to go harder on my around my left side. That’s all just club face right there. That was me trying to do the exact same thing. Go extreme around my left side. Right shoulder to the target. And what was that? A beautiful blistering little one- yard cut up the middle of the fairway. Right. I want to work on you being more square with your shoulders and your feet in your setup. Okay. When you bump your hips, I want you to see this guys. Okay? And this is what I want you to check out. Great tip for everybody. When you set up with a driver, A lot of people set up open. Well, here’s the thing with you. You’re bumping the hip. And remember what we talked about yesterday. You’re using way too much upper body to create this angle back here. So, what what Jar’s doing is going like this. Jerry, you’re going like that. And what needs to happen is this. Leave the chest alone. Bump the hip forward. And without dropping the shoulders, you can with a driver give it an inch of slide this way. It’s like a bump and slide. Ready? It’s like this. Boom. But not not where you’re actually going like this. And what’s happening is you’re getting real strong. You’re getting underneath. Your shoulders are getting way out to the right. Okay. And then the other killer. You set you set up this wide. You just don’t have a base that’s going to support the golf swing. Okay. Absolutely, brother. Absolutely. So, let’s do this, right? Let’s get the insides to the outsides of our shoulders. Number one, let’s let’s stand up. I gave you this yesterday. I think this is great for you. You can get the good grip from up here and give it the one and one. Ready? One and one. Here it comes. Ready? Boom. And then straight down. There you go. And here’s all all I care about from there. Just Just make your golf swing. You have a good golf swing. You know, I’m sitting back here with the boys. I mean, Kevin’s watching it. Alex is watching it. Your swing’s good. It’s just that you’re presetting the problem. So, you know, let’s process this. Okay, let’s get in there. Insides of feet, outside shoulder. Line the ball up then on the inside of the foot. Because if it’s insides of feet to the outsides of the shoulder, now now we have the right ball position of the inside of the foot. Just come up here. Come down. Find the right distance from the golf ball. Get that right hand grip correct. Watch. More square club face, straighter path for because your shoulders are more square. We’ll be in business. Now, hey, if you’re ever wondering if your shoulders are square, you can take the club and go like this. Ready? Say I’m home. I’m holding the club. Ready? And see how the palms are matching? What you would have found is this. Oh, they’re not matching. So, this is a wonderful one for you just to set up with and then right here. Great for putting also, by the way. Let’s see it, buddy. Good width of stance first. Yeah. And there’s, look at his grip. See, this will be This won’t hook. At least we’ll take that out of play. And now there’s the good width of stance. A little wider just a hair. Beautiful. And then just a bump. Not so much the upper body turning. Make your swing now. Let’s just see what we got. But hey, even though a little off balance, look at the ball flight. Dead straight, not one inch of movement on the golf ball, right? I wanted you to know that even though you fell a little off balance there, um because this is going to dictate a more straight path, this is going to dictate a more square club face, you have two variables that can allow you to swing more aggressively and not fear having the hook because it’s the fear of this one that leads to the big push out that way. And then all of a sudden, the shoulders get going that way. And sometimes you probably make a pretty good swing that ends up going that way, you know? So, just let’s just square you up. At a boy. Look at this ball flight, guys. Look at this ball flight. Hit him. I mean, dude, dead straight. At a boy. Oh, man. And you know what’s funny? The only reason that had five yards of hook on it with a good swing, you dropped your right hand under right before you pulled the trigger. When I get my right hand on top, watch my rotation. I can rotate around my front leg. No problem. Look at that thing. Look where I am. I’m over here. And what did that ball come off? Like a blazing little oneard cut right there. Okay, that’s like that’s the perfect little fairway finder right there. Okay, that was me doing the opposite of what you do. That was taking the right hand grip and making it square and then using my body’s rotation to really show you how to do that. was more the opposite of what you do. Now, you know, that was me even moving into it more than I even would to hit a driver. I mean, if I wanted to launch that ball, you know, I would stay back a little bit more for me. But for you, you need to do more of what I just did. Right hand on top here. Here, the reason why you fall off balance is you get this strong right hand. You go under here and you’re up here like this. And it’s like this. Okay? Rather than being here with the it starts with your grip and then for the grip has got to go square. Now I can rotate to square up the face. You know I move into it no problem. This is the thought that I play golf with. I try to I try to actually keep my head in the picture frame behind the golf ball, you know, and and that makes a big difference for me is in my ability to hit the golf ball the way I need to. But that’s because I’m a as a kid. I used to go that way. I don’t have a hanging back problem. I need to stay centered behind the ball. That’s my thought. But your thought needs to be, hey, you need to feel like you’re getting this right shoulder fully to the target, you know? And if you look at this, watch, I’ll swing normal without thinking about anything. And you’ll see my right shoulder will get to the target even with me feeling like I’m staying centered. But the thing is there’s constant rotation because I have a grip that allows me to do so. And I want you to actually before Jay, before I hit the golf ball, I want you to look at me. See where I am? Swing to me. That’s more of what you need to see. Look at that ball flight, guys. Look at the ball flight. And look at we got more balanced. That was in the air the longest of any drive. That was gold. What you just said, I was ringing a towel. There you go. And not letting it go. Not letting it go. We talked about the proper grip from him is not the underneath grip. I told him yesterday, “Ring out the towel.” And you know what? Maybe that gave you the perfect tension to where you could. And then you said, “I’m not gonna let it go.” By the way, and then here’s the cool thing. I just gave you some spatial awareness. I’m the kind of guy where you could tell me to keep my back to the target and then hit it. If you put a ball down right here and tell me to leave my sternum pointed at that ball, all of a sudden, like, I really can feel it. I’m a spatial awareness guy. So when I walked over here and I said, “Hey, just give me one little peak, swing right to me.” Well, all that is is that’s enough for you to be on the plane and actually get it going down the line and then finishing in the direction that you needed to finish in according to what your swing path naturally was, which was underneath and outright. Here’s the summary. Okay, we’re going to leave this alone. When you bump your hips, you naturally get beautiful upper body tilt. What’s the actual? The actual is if there’s a neutral line. Yeah, your chest is your sternum’s one inch right of that. Your hips are the belt buckle’s one inch left of that like this. We want to do that without dropping your shoulders. The dropping your shoulders gets you stuck back here and underneath. The dropping your shoulders gets your right hand more underneath. So, we keep your shoulders level. We bump your hips. We ring the towel. We ring the towel. We keep the tension there. And then we just get the feeling like we’re swinging the left field a little bit. It’s like my coach back in the day taking the sho string, tying it, tying it to your belt loop right here and literally pulling it at a 45 angle. He used to pull like this back this way, you know. All right, here we go. You got this. Club face square grip good. Yes, man. Let me tell you, look at that ball flight. I mean, those two drives out of three that you hit were in the air for literally three more seconds than the other ones. Let’s go to lunch. Hey, I think lunch, nice little lemonade. Come on back. Let’s own that. Okay, that’s good. That’s good stuff. No, we got a recipe there. I’ve been needing driver help so bad. I keep putting myself in bad spots off the box.
Nice video. Thanks
Amazing lessons I have learned a lot from following you! Thank you and keep up the amazing work.
I think the giving blood and hip bump caused me to have that stronger grip and lean back a little and I've hit both the hook and the block. This helps bigtime. Can't wait to try it on the range
ive seen some other videos where you teach to fire the hands and keep the chest pointed back. Would this be different because he hangs back and doesnt rotate at all vs someone like me that rotates first and the hands move over the plane?
I think he is also falling afterwards because his stance is open
This is why I'm subscribe to this channel.
A lot of people get that rear hand under neither with the palm facing the sky, and they think that's going to help them get the ball in the air, but it doesn't (unless they do a crazy amount of body rotation like David Duval or Dustin Johnson). Instead it leads them to coming in delofted and closed at impact and they hit extremely low and left like your demonstrated with that grip. Them getting the rear palm facing the target at address like an Ernie Els or Nick Faldo gets the club face much more square without the need for compensations.
Excellent video on grip and swing motion.
Great video as always! Just curious whether it would get you a ton more views if you had a more clickbait but still relevant title like “how to hit straight” lol
The right shoulder does drop a bit. It has to naturally.
Other videos say to have 2 knuckles showing on the left hand. Given the ball is so far forward does that change for the driver and/or fairway woods?
Best in the biz
Well said. 🎉
What adjustments, if any, would you recommend for players who fight an out-to-in club path?
I don't get the first part. Were you saying don't use a strong grip when hitting the driver?
I like it, thank you sir.
👏👏👏👍💪💯
Great video I have fallen into some of the same bad habits as this guy. Very helpful. It's amazing how bad stuff just creeps back into your game, and it seems like you get away with it for awhile. And then you suddenly don't and you're lost.
He still needs to widen his stance. Hes falling over. But baby steps I guess
Man I sure wished you’d come to Texas
yes
Adam it would be great to see shot tracer with your shots
I JUST worked on this with my coach, you NEVER miss! My shoulder tilt was so extreme and now it’s way better with my head in the frame like you said. Excellent!
Another great piece of advice
The move you’re talking about the bad move also create sciatic nerve or lower back issues which I’ve experienced. That’s just from my experience.
0:14 does this work for irons as well? That much rotation?
I tried the bumping of the lead side before swinging, but Gosh am hurting my lower back, will try to not to lift my shoulders up and go for it this way..confirm this works on every club?
Lunch sounds good.
As I said before, you are the best teacher/instructor. Love your videos!
I’m doing all this and still hooking it.
Porzak does it again! Nobody better in the training game! 4 years of following! These videos seem to just pop up at the right time with the exact thing I’m working on!
It’s a dream of mine to fly from the UK and have a lesson with Adam one day! Fantastic coach
Easier way to “drop rear” shoulder is to start with feet together while aligning club face… once set up, keeping eye on club face, drop right foot to your comfort position AND when doing this keep an eye on what happens to your club face… if done correctly, you will see it Close ever so slightly enables your draw as well… or by adjusting you rear foot you can find your target line…but you must not be gripping the club, rather, barely hold it, and once done, you can then adjust strength of grip
This guy knows his stuff… The putting tips are gold for me…
The grip trainer device really helped me get my right hand on top, feels very weak at first but stick with it
Thank you for the lesson. I'm gonna try this out next time I go out. I would love to get an in person lesson I live in Washington tho
Great video Adam. The grip (ring the towel) has to help with irons?
I can’t hit a driver for toffee
