SANTA ANA PUEBLO, N.M. – The New Mexico women’s golf team began play at the second annual NB3 Matchplay at Twin Warriors Tuesday with the opening two matches of the made-for-TV event. The Lobos dropped a 4-1 match to No. 4 Texas A&M in the morning before falling 5-0 to Arizona in the afternoon.
With one match remaining, Arizona leads the event with nine points, one ahead of Texas A&M with eight. New Mexico State is third with two points and the Lobos have one.
In the morning match, freshman Ava Cepeda recorded a 1UP win over Texas A&M’s Brynn Kort. Three other Lobos, Maria Caparros Levin, Rebecca Galasso and Juliette Hole all took their opponent the full 18 holes before falling. In the afternoon, Arizona used a quick start to take control of the match, eventually winning all five contests.
“This morning we fought really hard and took four matches to the last hole,” said head coach Jill Trujillo. “We saw a lot of good things. In the afternoon, we lost two or three holes right away on most of the matches. They fought hard, but in match play you can’t dig that big of an early hole, especially against good teams and expect to come back. We need to get off to a good start tomorrow. This is such a fun event, and it shows that we can play with teams like Texas A&M and Arizona, who are usually in the top 25. We just need to avoid the small mistakes, here and there, that those teams aren’t making.”
The NB3 Matchplay concludes Wednesday at Twin Warriors Golf Club with the Lobos playing New Mexico State. Play begins at 10:25am with Golf Channel coverage starting at 2:30 pm MT.
