Max Homa reflected on his strong putting performance and improved consistency after a frustrating start to the week. “I made a little pact with myself that the only thing I’d think about was the pace,” he explained, crediting better rhythm on the greens for his low round.
The American also discussed his iron play — “It’s been solid all week” — and a strange drive on 18 that he called “kind of a lame way to end a good day.” Despite that, Homa says his mindset and patience are trending in the right direction: “I know what’s in there, and if I can stay out of my own way, I can put up a few good scores.”
Max, putter seemed to get hot today after maybe a little bit of a excuse me, colder day yesterday. What was maybe the difference on the greens for you today? I thought my speed was a lot better. I put for a while yesterday afternoon and kind of just made a um little pack to myself that the only thing I’d think about was the uh was the pace uh even on a short one. Uh strokes felt so good and I felt like yesterday I missed a few early and started just thinking about my putting stroke too much. speed got worse and I don’t think there’s any like technical flaw in there. So, was really happy with the speed. That’s how you’re going to make long ones typically and I thought for the most part today it was uh it was really uh consistent. You feel like you hit the ball the statements you kind of have the first few days. It seems like your iron plays has been solid all week. Yeah, iron play’s been good. Uh drove it good enough. Hit hit some It’s kind of like tricky around here, but like hit some fairways like on on three and five that open up birdie uh so much easier. So, I don’t think I drove it any better than yesterday, but or or really the day before, but I I hit the right fairways. I guess there’s some out here you can miss and live. Uh it’s a very difficult driving golf course. You’re not going to go around there and hitting 12 fairways very often. So, uh whatever I hit today, I thought was was good enough. Um looking forward to uh just trying to do the same stuff I’ve been doing the last three days. I mean, today was an anomaly in a good way, but I thought yesterday was an anomaly in a bad way. So, just kind of take take uh take it and run with it. Is the drive on 18 just a a little bit of a pole up? I don’t know. It felt like my driver broke more so because my second drive was weirder than my first one, but uh that could be me making excuse. I’m not sure. I’m going to go whack a few in a little bit. That was weird because I thought I flushed it and it came out dead left and then my provisional came out like weirder to the right. So, I got to go figure that one out. But, uh it’s a kind of a a lame way to end a good day. But, um you know, that’s kind of just golf, I guess. You’ve talked about how your games felt really good since probably how the swings felt good and everything like that. Do you feel like in a way to kind of say do you feel like your swagger’s maybe coming back too a little bit that maybe a little bit? Um I don’t know about that. I I do I think I know uh you know especially after that long layoff. I I know that if I don’t get in my own way. Uh I’m one good round away from being in a golf tournament uh on a week that’s good. You know maybe I play two and I’m ahead. So, um I just think I know what’s in there and I know if I can stay out of my own way, I can turn like yesterday mentally felt like I could have shot it two, three over and turn into even. And I know those are little tiny things that don’t seem great when you’re in 40th, but um I never really felt like I was out of this golf tournament on a hard golf course, uh where I, you know, game feels pretty solid. So, I don’t know if it’s swagger, but I just think like my patience seems to be better and um I’m more tolerant of things that don’t go great and I have a lot of confidence in uh you know that I can put up a few good scores. Thanks, Mac. Cool. Thank you’all.
