Made my first HIO on a Par 3 Course last night, unfortunately I didn’t get to see it thanks to the UK sunset at 6:30pm.

101 Yards – so it was far enough to be a great shot, but wasn’t the buzz I was expecting for a hole in one. What do we think?

Did you stand on the tee and then hit the ball into the hole in one shot? If so, hole-in-one achieved. Good on you lad! Hope you bought the round of beers after!

You’ll get split responses in here too. Some will say yes as you took one swing on a hole and it went in, others will say no because on a normal course, you get 4 chances at it, where as on a par 3 course, you have that opportunity every single hole.

If I were in your shoes, if someone were to ask, I’d say yes, but caveat it with it was on a par 3 course.

Regardless, congrats, that’s awesome, bummer you didn’t see it go in

Are you counting it? Why does our opinion matter?

  4. ReedDickless

I wondered the same thing! I played a par 3 course a couple weeks ago. Missed a HIO by an inch, but I wouldn’t have counted it since it was a par 3 course.

My friend disagreed. Interested in this discussion.

100+ yard par 3 hole in one? Of course it counts. Doesnt matter if its a par 3 course or not

  6. siteswaps

It counts. If you hit the ball in the hole in a single stroke, it is by definition a hole in one. Literally nothing to argue about.

  7. It’s a hole in one. Doesn’t matter if it’s a par 3 course, plenty of videos out there of pros trying to hit a hole in one within x amount of shots and it doesn’t happen.

I played with a guy who shanked his shot on a par-3, we all ok’d a mulligan, and then he sank the HIO. We told him it didn’t count (it doesn’t) but he still had to buy us drink in the clubhouse haha

and, congrats to you! it totally counts

    Heck yes you count that.

My second one hit an over hanging tree branch over the hole. No one saw it go in – foursome.

But it was in the hole. Woot woot.

Each hole is a battle in the war. Sometimes you have time for 18, sometimes 9. What if you were allowed to play just 1? Let’s say this was that 1. It’s an Ace and anyone that disagrees can’t provide a valid counterargument.

  11. DefinititonOfLank

I’m of the stance “If you have to ask, it doesn’t count”.

You’re already questioning it, so you’re not going to have the fulfillment of what you believe a “real” one would be.

  12. AllDaWayUp88

So what you’re really asking is, “is a one is a one?”

  13. YaGoTLoLd

Ball from tee box to hole in one stroke, hole in one

  14. CTGolfMan

Pebble Beach hole 7 is 107 yards playing like 90 and you would be thrilled to get it there.

    Of course this counts.

  15. ThrowinSm0ke

Of course it does! Granted would a 330yrd par 4 hole in one be more impressive…yea. You’ve still achieved something that 99% never will

  16. Fight_those_bastards

Did you stand on the tee and hit a single shot, after which the ball came to rest in the hole?

If so, congratulations, that’s a hole in one.

  17. Greasy_Satchel

I count my HIOs playing putt putt golf so I’m pretty sure yours is solid.

  18. D-Train0000

There’s a tee box, a green, and a hole. It counts.

  19. Jumphrey1670

Thanks everyone for the validation here, I really thought there’d be more of a split between it counting and not but it seems the whole ‘Par 3 courses don’t count’ tale is just that, a tale.

Nice to see different people’s perspectives on it. I think in my head it wasn’t quite the same as on a course purely because every hole is a realistic opportunity. Though, since this is 9 holes I suppose it isn’t too far from 2 (ish) rounds of a championship course.

Look forward to making one one day when I can see it go in!

I don’t count ‘pitch & putt’ courses, but if you want to count it that’s totally fine

  21. My cutoff is whether you are able to post your round to a handicap. If the course is rated/sloped for the tees you played, it’s an ace. Doesn’t matter if it’s 62 yards or 235, par 72 or a 9 hole par 3 course. If you can post it, it counts.

  22. itsjscott

The fact that you are asking means that it doesn’t really count in your own opinion…

  23. Key-Benefit6211

Equivalent to counting HRs in a HR derby

  24. jaytee158

101 no question. There’ve been shorter holes on tour courses in the last few years

  25. So I see both sides of it. I see everyone saying, tee to hole in one shot, of course that’s a HIO. I see all of the arithmetic on distances and par three frequency depending on type of course, and I get all of that. But I get the other side of it too. I know for me, if I make one on a “regular” course (obviously up for interpretation what that even means), I’m coming into work on Monday and telling anyone who will listen all about it. If I do the same on a par three course, I know I wouldn’t come in with the same gusto. I know I’d be awkward and over clarifying everything about it so that no one thought I was claiming something greater than what I accomplished. That probably says more about me than it does the accomplishment.

My personal take – it’s your accomplishment, not anyone else’s. You know how you feel about it – let that guide whether or not it counts. For me, I think it would feel tainted, but I’ve never done it. You have.

  26. Kuntzsplitter

My par 71 course has a 90 yard par 3 that’s a touch shot, if you don’t hit the green, making par is hard. Count it

  27. let’s break it down folks. Where’d the ball go? In the hole? How many shots? One?. Would you say I got it in the hole in one? Hole in one.

  28. HalfBaked025

Does the course have a rating and slope? That my bar and almost all par 3 course, at least the ones I’ve seen, do. For reference, that’s also the USGA’s bar. Needs to be a rated course and you need to play a postable round from consistent tees (combo tees are fine if there are rated combo options).

  29. 9Firmino9

Generally speaking… was it a 60 yard hole? Probably not. Was it 100+? Definitely.

    Nice shot!

    Congrats. It counts!

Yesterday I was playing basically a practice round. I didn’t even bring all my clubs. It was just to get a walk and work on some real course scenarios instead of going to the driving range. Anyway, I got paired up with a group of 3 seniors, and they were playing from the forward tees. In order to speed up the pace, I just hit from their tees. (They were always clear to tee off before me, so I didn’t want them having to wait at my tee before going up to their tee.) Anyway, the forward tee on one of the par 3s made the hole literally about 60 yards.

As I stepped up to the tee, I thought: “Just my luck this will be my first hole in one and now I’ll have this story.”
