Westlake, OH-The Cleveland State men’s golf team returns to the course after a two-week break to host the annual Tom Tontimonia Invitational at Lakewood Country Club. The two-day event begins with 36 holes on Monday with the final 18 holes scheduled for Tuesday.
The tournament is named for longtime Cleveland State athletics administrator Tom Tontimonia. Lakewood Country Club will once again serve as the host course after Pine Hills Golf Club hosted last year’s event. The course, originally designed by A.W. Tillinghast in 1924, was unavailable last fall as it underwent a full-scale renovation. The new look course features adjustments to bunkers, fairway widths, tee boxes and green complexes all designed to restore the course to Tillinghast’s original design principles from over 100 years ago. The renovation effort was led by Keith Foster, who is known around the golf course industry as an architect very familiar with Tillinghast’s courses and design philosophy.
All six members of Cleveland State’s active roster will tee it up in the event. Brody Simms, Dillon Pendergast, Dominik Cosic, Ryan Dinan and Trace Gibson will compete in the five-man lineup. Ben Scheeff will play as an individual.
The Vikings are looking to continue their success throughout the first month of the fall season. Cleveland State posted a third-place team finish at the Golden Grizzlies Intercollegiate on September 14. Simms and Pendergast have each recorded two top five individual finishes with Simms tallying his first collegiate victory at the season-opening Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational.
The tournament field features 12 total teams, with two teams, Kent State and Cincinnati, competing with individuals only. Fellow Horizon League foes Green Bay, IU Indianapolis, Northern Kentucky, Purdue Fort Wayne, Detroit Mercy, Oakland, and Youngstown State will join the Vikings in the tournament field.
Action begins with a 9:00 a.m. shotgun start with continuous play for the first two rounds on Monday. The Vikings will begin on holes 1-4 and 18 to open the first round. Spectators are welcome to attend on both days and can walk the course adjacent to the players throughout the day. Live scoring will be available on Scoreboard Live throughout the event.
