JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Parkinson’s disease affects millions of people, and while there’s no cure, community support and wellness programs help patients manage symptoms and maintain quality of life.

For Gregg Hummer, the journey with Parkinson’s disease began with subtle symptoms.

“My first were the slowness and stiffness and depression and always sleepy. So, it was hard to determine if it was Parkinson’s because I did not have the tremor at first,” Hummer said.

Jax Hope Inc., a local nonprofit, works to support individuals like Hummer who are living with the disease that affects movement, balance and coordination.

“We try to connect the people with Parkinson’s to support groups that we help throughout the Jacksonville area,” said Lura Lockard of Jax Hope Inc. “And those support groups also have exercise programs for people with Parkinson’s. Tai-chi programs, boxing programs that we have in Jacksonville.”

The organization is preparing for its support Parkinson’s research at The Yards in Ponte Vedra Beach on Oct. 15. Although to beat Parkinson’s at The Yards in Ponte Vedra Beach on Oct. 15. While golf spots have sold out, opportunities remain for community involvement.

“There are other ways people can help sell out this tournament, especially for sponsorship,” Lockard said.
