Wheeling, W. Va. – After a long regular season competing against both Mountain East Conference (MEC) and regional opponents, the Wheeling University Men’s Golf team is ready to hit the playoff stage. The team heads to the 2025 MEC Men’s Golf Championships, looking to make a splash in the conference championship field. The Cardinals are coming off a streak that has seen them play their best golf of the season, finishing top 10 in each of their last three tournaments as they get ready to face the best of the best in the conference.

Last time out was the Cardinal’s best showing of the season as they took on the Sunnehanna Collegiate in a field comprised mostly of opponents from around the Atlantic Region. The first day of competition produced a tight race between the top seven teams in the field and the Cardinals put together their best showing of the season. They shot a 284 in round one and followed that up with a 285 in round two, putting them in the top five after one day of competition. They sat in a tie with Millesville, Charleston, West Chester, and IUP for that fifth spot, with the top teams being separated by just eight strokes. As they headed into round three, the Cardinals would look to keep the success going, and jumped two spots in the field shooting a 293 to finish in a tie for third in the field. Their three round score of 862 was the best showing of the season for the Men’s Golf team as they peaked at the right time.

Leading the way for the Cardinals was graduate student Sean Dobson, who finished tied for second in the field shooting a 208 at the event. It was a season best effort for the Graduate Student and was the second time this season that he finished under par in a tournament. It was a strong day one that had Dobson starting out strong as he shot a 69 in round one and followed that with a 67 in the second round. His round two effort would tie for his best single round score of the season, and put him just two strokes off the pace for the team single-round record. The effort was three strokes lower than his season best effort of 211, which he put up at the Golden Eagle Invitational, and he is looking to once again be an impact player for the Cardinals on the biggest stage.

The biggest jump from round one to round two would come courtesy of Troy Loughry, who jumped 27 spots in the tournament field over the final 18 holes. After shooting a 73 and 72 on rounds one and two, Loughry came back strong in the final round, shooting a 70 (E) to round out the event. Loughry would hit two birdies across the 18 holes, but it was his consistent pars throughout the day that fueled his success. He hit par on seven of the nine holes on the back nine and added six pars on the front nine to round out the day. Rounding out the top performers was Zak Collins, who finished in a tie for 47th overall with a three-day score of 220. The first day was his biggest performance, shooting a 72 and 73 respectively, before finishing the event at 75.

The 2025 MEC Men’s Golf Championships will be hosted at The Resort at Glade Springs running from Monday, October 6th through Wednesday, October 8th. It is the first year that the event has come to The Resort at Glade Springs, with the Men’s Championships being a par 72 course. The event will feature 54 holes of stroke play, with the top six teams advancing to round three as well as the top three individuals from non-advancing teams. Last season, the Wheeling Men’s Golf team advanced to the third day of competition for the first time since the 2016 season, and finished the event fourth overall, their highest team finish since 2015. Each day will see the players compete in 18 holes for a total of three rounds across the three days of competition.
