Play on the third day of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship has been cancelled due to Storm Amy and brutal 60mph winds after Andy Murray and co were taken off the courses on Saturday morning.

Robert MacIntyre was joint-leader in the clubhouse after wrestling with dreadful weather on Friday, producing a stellar display that included seven birdies.

The conditions proved exceptionally harsh once again on Saturday morning, prompting officials to call off play after just 20 minutes amid ferocious winds reaching 60mph.

The entire 164-player field – and the same number of pro-am competitors, including Murray – were all out on the three courses after a rare shotgun start, but were taken off when play was suspended, with balls moving on the greens.

Tournament organisers confirmed later on Saturday afternoon that the day’s play was being abandoned. A statement read: “All golf played over the three courses on Saturday, 4 October has been cancelled. The third round will be played on Sunday, 5 October as a two-tee start, over all three courses between 09:00 – 11.23.”

The championship, played across three venues at St Andrews, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns, comes just seven days after the 2025 Ryder Cup, where Europe claimed a thrilling 15-13 triumph against Team USA in which MacIntyre played a starring role.

Scotland’s leading golfer, who hit just one shot on Saturday after attempts were made at 12:30 to resume play, certainly conquered the challenging elements on day one, with South Africa’s Richard Sterne joining MacIntyre at the summit of the leaderboard on 12 under par.

MacIntyre looked back on the testing conditions after completing his round: “It was almost a perfect round of golf, especially once the weather came in, just a lovely round,” said MacIntyre.

“It’s difficult when it gets this windy. It’s hard to hit the ball good with the wind. I was having to try and fight the wind on certain holes and wasn’t comfortable. But I made some beautiful shots. Yeah, putted solidly in the wind.”

It has now been confirmed that no golf will take place on Saturday due to those conditions. Gareth Bale joins Murray as one of the celebrities in action. The tournament pairs amateurs with professionals, with Murray making his professional debut alongside world number 547 Eddie Pepperell.

The pair are currently trailing by nine shots after the former tennis star scored three birdies. However, Murray’s attempt to chip out of a bunker went badly wrong, leaving him laughing and doubling over in disbelief.

Other notable participants, particularly following last week’s action at Bethpage, include Matt Fitzpatrick, Tommy Fleetwood, and Tyrell Hatton.

Hatton, the defending champion, was poised to remain level with MacIntyre, but the tough conditions have left him four shots adrift of the leaders.

Just in front of him is his European colleague Fitzpatrick, who carded a 69 after his opening 67. Fleetwood, meanwhile, is tied with Hatton on seven under par.
