The Team Europe Ryder Cup team had a message for Donald Trump after claiming victory at Bethpage Black, which comes days after a handful of American stars were spotted sucking up to the president.
On the final day of the Ryder Cup, the Europeans staved off a charge from the Americans to retain the cup, with Shane Lowry putting the finishing touches on a hard-fought matchup. After the win, it was clear that the European Ryder Cup team took all the words they received and Trump’s presence to fuel the victory.
On social media, the entirety of the team was spotted in a video sending a message to the president. This comes after the president had a message for Team Europe captain Luke Donald regarding his leadership.
“Are you watching, Donald Trump?” the European stars chanted repeatedly in the 14-second clip posted on social media. Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose were front and center, with the rest of the stars joining in along in the chants.
Despite Team USA losing in heartbreaking fashion, the president had a message ready for the Europeans, replying in kind. “Yes, I’m watching. Congratulations!” Trump posted on his Truth Social platform.
Fans on social media were torn about the clip the Europeans posted, with one noting that the players perhaps were doing it in jest, considering many have met the president in the past. “IMO, most are doing it in jest. Trump has relationships with most pro golfers around the world,” one post began.
“Rory had a round of golf with Kai earlier this year. So for those saying they don’t like him, if they really did not like him, Trump would not congratulate them back.”
Another commented: “Hahaha these guys are adorable. I love that Rory boy. They played very good. We’ll just have to beat them in Ireland,” while a third added: “Majority of them play golf with DT on a regular basis & they all have homes in Florida.”
For McIlroy, Sunday’s win was the culmination of a rough week, which saw himself and his European teammates heckled constantly with a drink even landing near his partner Erica Stoll.
Don’t Miss
Speaking on his experience, the Northern Irish star said: “Yeah, extremely proud to be a part of this team. I’m extremely proud of every single one of the players, the vice captains, the captain, all the back room support staff. This was unbelievable collective effort.
“As soon as we won in Rome we turned our attention to trying to do something that everyone thought was pretty impossible to do, not just win in America but win here in New York.”
He added: “Yeah, it’s been a really tough week. It’s been really tough. I felt I didn’t have much today. I didn’t feel I put up that much of a fight against Scottie. He wasn’t at his best either. If we were at our best, the level of golf would have been better.
“When you win a Ryder Cup, it isn’t about you. It’s about the team, and we did enough to get the job done.”
