Taylor Montgomery gets brutally honest after a strong round at the Sanderson Farms Championship. From 58s in practice rounds to struggling for FedExCup points, Montgomery opens up about tinkering with his swing, injury battles, and frustration with results not matching the effort.
Wow. Which is crazy. That’s insane. It is crazy. We were talking about it walking up to the green. Uh, you all good there, Mitchell? T, what was um how’d you kind of assess the round today? Uh, great. Yeah, it was it was nice to make a lot of birdies and uh play the way that I feel like I know I can, but don’t always do. What’s kind of what what do you think maybe’s been holding your game back a little bit this year? Do do you believe uh this year has been a lot of like kind of tinkering and messing around. My swing’s gotten a lot better, but I was working on that. And uh now if I can take how I play at home out here to tournament golf, I think I it’s more like what I’ve done today. I mean, I’ve had a lot of rounds this year. I shot 58 at Shadow, 59 at Summit with Mav McNeely, and had a lot of low rounds. I just haven’t done it out here. And I I I haven’t played that bad this year if you look at it. I I think I’m 20th in uh scoring average on tour, but I’m 150th in points. So, uh just haven’t had a really good solid week to get a lot of points. I’ve been finishing a lot of like 30th to 50ths and that’s never going to get it done. Is it hard sometimes tinkering with your swing but also having to go out and try to perform on on the in the best tour in the world? Yeah, it has been. Uh I not much of a swing mechanics guy, but I’d gotten into such a bad habit a couple years ago and then I had the shoulder injury that took a while to kind of come back and I mean I’ve been working my ass off. It just hasn’t showed. Was it I saw in um 3M was your last start on tour before Proour. I know you played a few cornf tour events. Was it good to be able to kind of go there and and play when there you had a big break there on on on the PJ tour? Yeah, it was. I just needed to get out and play in tournaments and feel the pressure and kind of go through my routine and the four days walking or really seven, but all the days walking instead of being at home with the boys uh riding in a golf cart. It’s a it’s a big difference that nobody really talks about. What do you feel like what do you feel like you’ve done so well this week to to put you in a position to be in contention this weekend? Uh yesterday I scrambled really well. Uh testing a new driver and man I was hitting it so good coming into the week I was so excited and striped it on the first six holes was even more excited and then it was awful after that. So, I mean, I’ve known for a while it’s not really the driver, it’s more me, but uh this is definitely a better setup and I drove it better today. And if I can just keep doing that, uh if I can hit the driver good, I’m not going to play too bad. Thanks. Sweet. All right. Cool. Thank you.
