Andy Murray might be one of the best tennis players of his generation, but one moment this week shows his golf play perhaps still leaves a bit to be desired. The former British No.1 has been out competing at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, sparking questions about a longer-term switch of sports, but there have been lows as well as highs.
In a clip shared by the DP World Tour, Murray can be seen making a pig’s ear of a bunker shot and seeing the ball trickle just a few feet away without leaving the sand trap. “One of us, Andy,” the caption reads, and Murray himself delivered a self-deprecating verdict of his own.
“I know I know I’m terrible at golf,” the Scot wrote. However, others have been pleasantly surprised by some of his play out on the course and wouldn’t be surprised to see him make the move over.
There was even some sympathy for Murray in the comments for the DP World Tour post. “We’ve all been there. More than once,” one reply read, with another saying: “I wish I could say those days were over”.
“This is so me on a golf course,” wrote another. “Looks a lot worse than it actually was .. fine lines in this wonderful game of ours,” was another of the more sympathetic readings.

Murray has spoken about his golf hopes of late, telling The Times: “A couple of my friends who are very good golfers have [played The Open]. If I can improve enough, I think it would be a fun thing to do.
“I played in the club championships at Beaverbrook a few months ago and I loved it. It was the most fun I’d had playing golf and the more I play, the less I enjoy just playing socially. I don’t know if I’ll be capable of entering, but I want to try and play in a few more events.”

Murray also spoke of the support he has received from some more established golfers. “I’ve been pretty amazed at how willing the pros are to help because spending five hours with people who are hacking it around probably isn’t that enjoyable,” he added.
Gareth Bale is another sportsman to pick up the golf clubs after retirement, and the former footballer has opened up on which of he and Murray is the better out on the course. “My handicap would suggest me! But [Andy] is a good player,” he told Express Sport.

“He hasn’t been playing long, but he’s a very good player. I’ve played with him many times now and he’s such a good, nice, humble guy. He’s very funny as well.”
Partnered with professional golfer Eddie Pepperell, Murray finished seven under after the first 18 holes on Thursday, and following their second round on Friday, the duo are tied-28th on 15 under par.
