What story can you share with us about the best lesson that he taught you? I was thinking today when I got on stage, I was going to talk about the story where we were sitting in a staff meeting once. Nick was asking the staff if he if we thought any of the players were tired, like we looked tired. Do y’all think the legs are tired? You think they’re tired? You know, he’s asking and asking. Nobody’s really saying anything. And this coach beside me starts drawing a little figure. And I thought it looked like similar to like the United States map. And I said, “What is that?” He said, ‘ That’s a pork chop.’ He said, ‘He’s dangling a pork chop to see if one of y’all will bite on that pork chop. And I didn’t say a word. And we had a young coach in there that said, “Yeah, coach. I think I think I think their legs are tired.” Man, he went he lit him up. I mean, it was great for a young coach to sit back and shut your mouth.

That isn't great. Thats poor leadership and an ego trip. Spent my career in the Army Infantry (combat vet) and as a Police Officer, and I've seen plenty of poor leaders.
Just because Saban won games off the backs of talented 17 year olds he recruited (paid under the table) doesn't mean he was an affective leader of adults. Its part of the reason he couldn't make it as an NFL head coach. I've heard similar stories of him losing his cool on people simply for bringing him a salad. Professional success is not the same thing as being a good leader.
I'm also a University of Alabama graduate during Saban's tenure. I went to class with some of those players before the NIL days, and know for a fact that players were paid.
I really like Kirby. He's good for the game. ❤
I get it then I don’t lol 😆. Saban seemed like he was genuinely wanted to know
I love when Kirby talks rtr I miss em…he gone die a Georgia coach legend 20+ years 💪🏿💪🏿
Kirby about to choke himself out with that tie
Marty needs to disappear. He was complicit during the BLM/Covid era. Never forget!!
Very scary team with Saban and Kirby.
lol I just realized that those are the same people. I remember when he coached for Alabama now I know why Georgia is so good. 😂😂😂😂 just completely missed that one 😂😂😂😂
Too often we excuse bad behavior when someone is successful. It takes courage and leadership to speak truth to your boss. This interaction could have ruined a young coaches career. Elite talent was more responsible for those championships than any coach
So he asked them a question and lit the coach up who gave an opinion?
Sounds like pretty poor leadership to me.
If you can't find this funny then don't call yourself white be woke
How do these coaches preach to players but let themselves go? I couldn’t deal with that neck.
I can't believe this dude is only 49. He looks sixty
I could hear it now "I mean coach it has bee…"… "oh yall are tired.. tired from what yall haven't done shi*" 😂
Kirby smart and the bulldog UGA ,the only 2 things i like about Georgia
Look at Kirby smarts mouth when he talks.
Lane, Kirby and Nick on the same team. Oh scary!!!!!!
The best lesson Nick taught was how to not get caught paying players/players families before NIL. All those 5 star recruits before NIL was allowed, and you didn't give some of them ca$h? 😂. You might be fooled, but me and Shane Gillis (he said it live to Nick's face on ESPN) are not.
First this is a story where he learned what he needed to know by another coach. So he didn’t answer the question.
Nick taught him not to trust him? Kirby learned that Nick set traps and dangled food in front of his coaches?
It’s bad form. Your learning not to be honest, be guarded, not be genuine and not to care for players really. Why can’t coaches answer questions as they see fit.
Making fun of new coaches like that is like training bad into them. Is it really toughness or moral bankruptcy to not care about how tired players are? I think coaches should care.
What next? Did Saban get 12 million bucks in 50 suitcases and count it out in front of you all? Cuz we know he care about money. Did he say, “I’m setting a precedent so that you coaches can take from these schools that 17 & 18 year olds come to learn trades and to further intelligence systems in society. The players that I don’t care if you think they are hot or tired aren’t getting the cash. I am, Nick Saban!!!! Say my name, Nick Saban. Cuz ole Alabama doesn’t give the money to Saint Nick to give back to the players or students, he gives it to me, NICK SABAN. I have more staff so I have time to play these games.”
I’m embarrassed to say I don’t get it. Can someone explain? A coach drew a pork chop?
What a stupid way to teach a lesson.
Kirby be careful I'm sure heart disease runs in your family. You look bad.
As a Bama fan, it always pained me to see Kirby's teams look like the older Saban teams instead of what we got the last 4 years of Saban's career. Strong running game and strong defense. BAMA seemed to forget what made Bama Bama. The fact they made it to the NC game with Milroe as quarterback tells you how good of a coach Saban was.
Was he one of those assistant coaches that constantly called him daddy that was the weirdest thing I've ever heard
Kirby please come to bama 😭🙏
Fishing for bad answers has always been a great leadership tactic.
So the lesson was… ave the best recruiting classes in the country (b/c of the limited boosters Bama could exploit) then have all the other coaches act as of it was 1984. Understood.. coach
I don’t get it. Why would Coach want to bait assistants into saying something just to go off on them & encourage an environment where ideas are not discussed? Especially when asking an explicit/direct question?
I’m not trying to instigate anything. I just don’t get what the point is supposed to be beyond “sit down & STFU”.
He’s obviously a great leader, what’s the leadership lesson in this?
Some of yall never played ball and it shows
Never knew Kirby Smart was under Nick Sabans coaching tree.
Awesome Advice Coach 👍🏾
Kirby is a awesome coach
Is asked a direct question
“You gotta learn to shut your mouth”
What?
🤣🤣🤣 … 💛
“Nobody ever got in trouble for shutting the f$(& up” 😂
Saban knew when to shut up
Kirby is a great guy and a great coach. Learned from the best. RTR
I love Kirby he is a great coach. I played for his type and that’s who I had the most respect for.
I wish he was at Bama and I know he’s a Georgia alum but I root for him except against my team the Tide!
The 2009, 2011, and 2012 National Championship Teams with Kirby leading the defense and Nick overseeing everything else was Incredible! Some call the 2011 team the greatest defense in modern day history. We were blessed to have BOTH these men for so
Many years… I can't question Smart for staying put at Georgia….
100 years from now when 99.9999999% of all life alive now will be gone but coach Sabans record will still stand and the stories about him being told by former coaches will still be the best. Roll Tide Roll……….
I will always love Kirby. He gave us so many great defenses at Alabama. He coached hard for us. Love you Kirby. Sorry we have to play every year. You deserve to win all your games brother.
Nick was such a General! 😂
lol 😂 this is awesome 😊
