A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John’s golf finished sixth out of nine teams at the 2025 MIAC Championships last weekend (Sept. 27-29) at Edinburgh G.C. (par 72) in Brooklyn Park. Bethel shot the final round’s best score – a 3-over par 291 – to win its third conference championship with a three-round total of 891 (+27), five shots ahead of Gustavus Adolphus in second (+32, 896). Carleton was third (+37, 901), followed by St. Olaf (+53, 917), Macalester (+58, 922) and SJU (+62, 926).

The Johnnies had a strong start through their first nine, carding 25 pars, five birdies and three eagles, but trouble came later in the course, shooting over par on almost half of their back-nine holes.

Senior Ethan Kress (Woodbury, Minn.), SJU’s leader through rounds one and two, finished 17th with a 5-over 77 on Monday. Kress shot par on eight of his first nine holes but carded an eight on the par-4 No. 7. He added six pars and a two-shot eagle on the back nine but bogeyed 10 and 11 for a three-round 230 (+14), dropping five spots on the final leaderboard.

Sophomore Gavin Grahek (Maple Grove, Minn.) finished 19th for SJU with a weekend total of 232 (+16). He was two under to start Monday’s round three, collecting a pair of birdies and a three-shot eagle on hole nine, but bogeyed four consecutive after the turn for a 6-over 78.

Freshman Austin Roloff (Minneapolis, Minn./Spring Lake Park) shot par on 12 of his 18 holes on Monday and ended with a birdie but doubled twice and bogeyed three times to join Grahek with a 78 (+6). He finished tied for 23rd with a 234 (+18) in his first MIAC tournament.

Senior Tim Fultz (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) and junior Nate Appelhof (Blaine, Minn./Totino-Grace) tied for 25th at 235 (+19). Fultz also shot eagle on No. 9 and was even through his first nine holes but finished as the third Johnnie with a 78. Appelhof had SJU’s best start on Monday with a pair of birdies, a three-shot eagle on No. 4 and two pars but doubled twice and bogeyed three times on his next five holes. He finished with an 81 (+9) on Monday.
