PGA of America President Don Rea Jr. on Thursday “apologized” in an email to the 30,000-plus golf professionals he was elected to serve for his attempt to downplay fans’ “vitriolic comments at the Ryder Cup” that were directed toward European players. His letter to PGA of America members began by noting, “some fan behavior clearly crossed the line.” Rea went on to write, “It was disrespectful, inappropriate, and not representative of who we are as the PGA of America or as PGA of America golf professionals. We condemn that behavior unequivocally” (AP, 10/2). Rea’s apology stems from his comments during a BBC Sport interview Sunday at Bethpage Black, where he was “content to downplay the various incidents” and compared the fan behavior to what could be experienced at a “youth soccer game” (SI, 10/2).
