For the first time in its history, the Elizabethton Cyclones boys golf team captured the Region 1-A title and in the process qualified for the state tournament.
The Cyclones were led in scoring by Bryson Hardin and Tyler York. Hardin posted a 72 to claim medalist honors, edging Sullivan East’s Will Carrier, who finished with a 73. York shot a 77, good enough for third medalist. Senior Braxton Avery posted an 82, while Marshall Holtsclaw and Gage Stout added rounds of 88 and 89, respectively.
Hardin was thrilled with the win but even more excited that his team earned the state berth.
“Well, at the beginning of the year my goal was to make it to state, but even better as a team. We worked and worked all year and it paid off. It is gonna be so much fun playing at state with the boys. I shot 72, but everyone else did their part to get us to state,” Hardin said.
Only one team earns an invite to the state tournament, and Elizabethton advanced with a 317–326 win. The Cyclones will play next week at Sevierville Golf Course.
The victory marks the third straight on their home course after wins in both the conference and district tournaments. Head coach Zac Ensor acknowledged the significance of the achievement.
“It’s huge for our program and for the boys. We’ve had individuals make it before, but just getting to take the whole team makes it special,” Ensor said.
Hampton’s Ezra Tolley just missed the cut, shooting an 81.
