Murrayshall in Scotland recently invested in a fleet of robotic mowers to reduce the manual workload, manage ongoing costs and ensure consistently pristine playing surfaces. To make the investment financially sustainable, the club implemented a flexible funding plan, as detailed here, through Golf Finance.

Murrayshall Golf and Hotel, set in the picturesque landscape of Perth, offers an excellent golfing experience across its well-maintained course. With growing pressure on greenkeeping resources and a focus on long-term sustainability, general manager Gary Silcock began evaluating how modern technology could enhance operational efficiency and turf quality. The management team identified robotic mowing as a forward-thinking solution to reduce manual workload, manage ongoing costs and ensure consistently pristine playing surfaces.

The Process
Following comprehensive evaluation and on-site demonstrations, Murrayshall partnered with supplier Strathbogie Forest and Garden to introduce a fleet of Husqvarna robotic mowers. Two different sizes of machines were deployed: larger Ceora units for covering fairways and rough efficiently, and smaller models for trickier areas and surrounds where greater manoeuvrability was required.

A key factor was Husqvarna’s outstanding GPS technology. The precision guidance system ensures accurate, consistent coverage across all areas of the course, resulting in a better overall solution that surpassed alternatives on the market. Dependable service support and strong feedback from the course manager also played an important role in the decision.

To make the investment financially sustainable, the club implemented a flexible funding plan arranged through Golf Finance. This streamlined process allowed Murrayshall to move quickly, spreading payments over an adaptable term and preserving cash flow while immediately benefiting from the new technology. Training and setup were expertly coordinated through Strathbogie, enabling a seamless integration into regular maintenance routines.

The Outcome
Since adopting the Husqvarna robotic mowing solution, Murrayshall has seen significant improvements in course presentation, turf health, and overall efficiency. The robots now cut roughs, fairways, and surrounds up to three times a week, ensuring consistent grass lengths and a stronger, healthier plant. Members and guests have already praised the enhanced quality of cut.

Gary Silcock noted the results are reminiscent of tournament-level setups from his time at venues like The Belfry and Gleneagles – achieved then with large teams, now delivered through automation with far fewer resources.

“The Husqvarna Ceora has redefined how we manage the course. It’s cost effective, efficient and enhances our team’s capabilities. Our supplier support from Strathbogie and the seamless financing process facilitated by Golf Finance made the transition to automation incredibly smooth.” Gary Silcock, General Manager
