Fitzpatrick, Hatton, Fleetwood condemn Ryder Cup crowd hostility | Golf Central | Golf Channel
BOTH OF THOSE MATCHUPS WERE PRETTY CLOSE ASIDE FROM THAT DOMINATING PERFORMANCE IN 2004. EARLIER TODAY IN SCOTLAND, MULTIPLE EUROPEAN RYDER CUP TEAM MEMBERS GAVE THEIR THOUGHTS ON THE ATMOSPHERE AT BETHPAGE. >> IS AN APOLOGY FROM THE PGA OF AMERICA ENOUGH? >> I MEAN, I GUESS THEY APOLOGIZED ON BEHALF OF THE FANS. LIKE I SAY, I SAW THOSE COMMENTS ABOUT THE — I SAW THE INTERVIEW WITH THE PGA GUY, AND IT WAS PRETTY OFFENSIVE TO EUROPEAN FANS THE FACT THAT HE SAID THAT, REALLY. I DON’T WANT TO SPEAK ON BEHALF OF EVERYONE, BUT WE FELT THERE WAS A LITTLE BIT OF BITTERNESS WHEN WE GOT TO THE PRESENTATION OF THE TROPHY THERE AND SHOOK THE HANDS. I THINK IT WAS — YOU KNOW, IT’S NOT LIKE THEY CAN CONTROL WHAT COMES OUT OF EVERYONE’S MOUTH. NO DOUBT ABOUT THAT. I THINK, I WOULDN’T SAY WE WERE OUT THERE LOOKING FOR AN APOLOGY, BUT I WOULD SAY IT’S UNDERSTANDABLE THAT THEY WOULD APOLOGIZE. I’VE HAD QUITE A NUMBER OF EMAILS FROM FRIENDS WHO ARE AMERICAN, EMAILS AND APOLOGIZING FOR THE FANS AND SAYING WE’RE REALLY SORRY YOU HAD TO DEAL WITH THAT. WE KNEW WHAT WE WOULD DEAL WITH GOING IN AND LUKE AND THE TEAM DID AN AMAZING JOB WITH THAT, AND YOU PREPARE SO THAT ACTUALLY WHEN YOU GET THERE, WE WERE EXPECTING THIS ANYWAY, SO IT WASN’T AN ISSUE. >> SORRY, JUST WHEN YOU SAY THERE WAS A BIT OF BITTERNESS THERE. WHO, SPECIFICALLY, ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT THERE? >> THE CEO OF THE PGA OF AMERICA. ME AND ROSY LOOKED AT EACH OTHER AND SAYING IT WASN’T A VERY HEARTFELT CONGRATULATIONS AND HE SAID WE ONLY RETAINED IT. >> KEATON MADE AN ASTONISHING REMARK AND HE SAID HIS ROOM WAS VIOLATED, AS WELL AND THEY SAID IF YOU COMPARE THE TWO ATMOSPHERE ROOM AT BETHPAGE, IS THAT LAUGHABLE? >> PERSONALLY, I DON’T THINK THAT THEY WERE CLOSE AT ALL. I CERTAINLY THINK THAT WITH WHAT WE HAD LAST WEEK ROME COMES ANYWHERE NEAR THAT. TO BE HONEST, I DON’T AGREE WITH WHAT THEY BOTH SAID THERE — TO BE HONEST. YOU WERE PREPARED FOR THAT. WAS THERE ANY ASPECT OF THAT WHICH ACTUALLY SHOCKED YOU AND ALSO, HAVE YOU ANY CONCERNS GOING FORWARD WILL THAT THERE WILL BE SOME PEOPLE AFTER SOME PAYBACK FOR THE AMERICAN TEAM IN THE GALLERIES? I DON’T KNOW. THERE’S A BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN — THERE’S A BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A HOSTILE ENVIRONMENT AND GETTING IN PERSONAL COMMENTS. AGAIN, I GO BACK — AND I THINK WE’RE ALL PREPARED FOR IT, AND YOU KNOW, IT’S NOT — IT’S NOT ABOUT THE ENTIRE U.S. FANS OR THE CROWD. I DON’T THINK THAT WE SHOULD, YOU KNOW, BE VIEWING THAT AS A WHOLE AND I HAVE SO MANY FRIENDS THAT ARE AMERICAN AND PEOPLE SAID I HAVE TO SUPPORT MY OWN TEAM AND THINGS LIKE THAT. THAT’S WHAT IT IS AND YOU’RE GOING TO GET I TOUGH ENVIRONMENT WHEN YOU GO FOR THE RYDER CUP. YEAH. THE COMMENTS CAN GO TOO FAR AND YOU OBVIOUSLY HOPE THAT THAT DOESN’T HAPPEN AGAIN OR IT SHOULDN’T HAPPEN, AND IT’S OUT OF OUR CONTROL AND YOU JUST HAVE TO UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU GET AND WHAT YOU’RE THERE FOR AND GO AND PLAY GOLF, AND LIKE I SAY, HOW MANY PEOPLE? 50,000 PEOPLE? 60,000 PEOPLE, YOU CAN’T HAVE A GO AT EVERYONE BECAUSE OF THE MAJORITY. I HAVE NO HARD FEELINGS ABOUT IT AT ALL. LIKE I SAID, IT HELPS THAT WE WON, OBVIOUSLY, BUT — IT’S HARD, AND ONE OF THE AMAZING THINGS IS THAT ATMOSPHERE THAT IT CREATES AND WE WERE ALL VERY SAD FOR AND IT SHOWED. >> QUITE A LYNNUP FOR THE RYDER CUP IN THE COMING YEARS. >> IRELAND WHICH MARKS THE SECOND TIME THAT THE COUNTRY WILL HOST THE RYDER KIP AND THE EVENT RETURNS STAT
Matt Fitzpatrick, Tyrrell Hatton and Tommy Fleetwood all explain why the actions of the Ryder Cup crowd at Bethpage Black were too far despite the fact that the European team was prepared for hostility. #Golf #PGATour #RyderCup #BethpageBlack

Europe so soft…..fuck these guys let’s go to war with them and then they will shut up….get rid of all these guys un grateful btw they play and live in the US
Love to see the yanks accepting defeat graciously,NOT,that wasn’t banter that was downright disgraceful,NO CLASS 🤡🤡
Yes it is important that the fans know how to behave, but honestly the winning Ryder Cup team spend more time having to talk about the fans behaviour than what playing in and winning the Ryder Cup means to them….
I was at Rome and heard zero personal abuse of players. My mate went to both and he said Bethpage was appalling and atrocious. The US crowd were abusive and deeply personal to Rory, John Rahm and others including their wives and family members. I also went to the Masters and there is none of this there. So American fans can behave if the environment demands it. Let’s not sugar coat the behaviour at the Ryder Cup. The CEO of the US PGA should resign over this debacle. Well done Matt for calling it out.
The management of the PGA of America are looking for excuses instead of taking responsability. They all should retire and seek a new challenge. Those morons are completely unqualified to lead the organization.
i agree. it's shameful and embarrassing
When I tune in to the Ryder Cup I do so with the expectation of watching great golf. I do not wish to watch spectator abuse. This Ryder Cup I got to watch great golf but it was tainted by spectator abuse. If the spectator issue isn’t addressed I will stop watching the Ryder Cup. The sportsmanship is being lost to spectator abuse.
Just not have Ryder Cup in New York. Giants, Knicks, Ranger fans etc are the worse. Plenty of other beautiful courses in the US.
The worse thing is the total lack of any real genuine apology or shame from the PGA of America. This is what America has become and now stands for, cruelty, shameless chest thumping, no class, no sportsmanship and no honour.
Only those legends like Tom Watson have shown any leadership as they know what true values golf holds.
It is such a shame the DP Tour are wedded to this poisionous and odious tour as they should be working with the LIV and Asian Tours to create a world tour in a variety of formats that allows golf to cold shoulder and move away from its dependency on the US PGA.
European fans are behind their team, full of energy and banter but always respect the game and opposition and know where the line is. American fans don't even know what the line is and people should stop making excuses from what was hooligan behaviour as it will kill off the Ryder Cup as a sporting pinnacle.
Oh and the American's will enjoy Ireland in 2 years time (assuming their country has not imploded by then) as the locals will make the volume ten times louder now and the sharp wits will be throwing barbs at all your players and hangers on like you would not believe, but of course not on your back swing as we will beat you fair and square without resorting to cheating.
Well America is on the verge of a violent civil war. Apparently the military is going to take over many American cities and kill its own citizens. I think in the fullness of time the European team will be glad they got out without more serious consequences. On the current trajectory of America there will not be another Ryder Cup anyway.
It’s NYC, what do you expect. Those people are gross
Some of the fans were a disgrace. 1. Can we just have them removed by the police? 2. Might have to stop serving alcohol – they obviously can’t take their weak beer that well.
Bradley could have mad a statement after session 1 – all he had to say was there’s a line folks. He would have been praised and respected for that.
Why dont they play on neutral turf it would be less tense.
Sorry to all saying that there is nothing you could do……. I live for sport and on many, many occasions the team I have been on has stopped and said, no we are not here for this. If the
Americans in the group had stopped, refused to play another shot until the crowd showed some respect, then the whole talk would now be around how good is golf and the way it is played
Team USA did not play badly, Team Europe just played better. There was some terrific golf from both teams. Alcohol obviously played a major part in the disgraceful behaviour of some fans, so maybe that needs dealing with for a start. However, at $15 a beer, I doubt that revenue stream will be limited, even when entry tickets were eye-wateringly expensive to begin with.
What I’d like to see is the European players boycotting the USPGA events, but they won’t. Money talks.
They need to be careful. The Ryder cup seems to be getting nasty, which is a shame. Also these players need to remember they play mostly in the US so don’t bite the hand that feeds you! Fleetwood is the one who seems to appreciate that fact most.
The guys trying their best to be as polite as possible 😂😂 The Americans were a disgrace, a very good proportion of them at least. Typical of Trumptards.
American fans are hooligans.
They act like their president.
So abusive and fouled mouth.
Fleetwood is right, you cannot blame 60,000 people because there are 20 -50 idiots amongst them! And when you play in an event like this, be prepared for the emotions that come with it!
You have to keep in mind these idiots in NY have been electing far lefties for 70 years you aren’t dealing with the sharpest tools
Stop kicking a dead horse…it was wrong..it’s over …Europe won..move on..
As captain of the US team, Keegan Bradley should have spoken about the fan behavior that went too far, but he failed, just as his team of superstars did on the course. Add the sour grapes comments about the envelope rule (you signed a captain's agreement Keegan, outlining all of the rules, don't whine about it afterward), and this was a total fail in all respects. Fortunate for him that the Sunday comeback made it look a little closer, otherwise he would go down as the worst captain in Ryder Cup history.
As a Euro, I should probably point out a mitigating circumstance for the New York Fans. For two solid years they were encouraged to be over the top, and classic East Coast sporting mean spiritedness was presented as a great thing that they need to live up to. The ferocious new York fans will win us the Ryder Cup, was the narrative, from the same journos who are hammering them right now. So I can understand why they maybe overdid it. Still, lads, you need to spend way more time supporting your own team, than abusing the other. Otherwise the vibe gets weird, and hurts your own dudes most of all.
Americans are bad loosers. I feel for the guys because the PGA is their livelihood. Americans obviously can't be magnanimous in defeat.
i have to admit, i was never a big JT fan, without knowing really why. but that changed with this ryder cup. he was practically the ONLY one from the american side who condemned that fan behaviour. that goes a very long way and shows the kind of sportsman he is. to compare rome to bethpage is so offensive to europeans and really only hurts the american reputation. we know, it is just a few idiots, BUT that is exactly when you shut them up and do something about it. tolerating aweful behaviour and waiting for better times – just look at politics – does not help or better the situation. coming from germany who recently went to LA and loves the US.
Trying to intimidate British or Irish people is a dumb tactic. It will just inspire them to stand up straighter and make them fight harder.
All of these guys and gals are in for a wild treat of proper Scottish weather this weekend! Oh, boy! It's gonna be crazy!! 🌬️ 🌬️ 🌬️ 🌧️ 🌧️ 🌧️ ☔ ☔ ☔
Disappointed how apologetic Tommy was for the fans.
Would you expect anything else from Americans when they congregate.
What a disgusting crowd it was. Never seen such scum on a golf course. They are trying to win by cheating. Damn how embarrassing the USA has become.
If one of the Americans had stood up to the disgraceful behaviour of the crowd by offering to concede holes if it continued, they would be lauded for their sportsmanship for decades. It was a chance for one of them to be thought of in the same way Jack Nicklaus has been for his concession to Jacklin.
Americans from the down have no concept of decorum. Ryder Cup will be in Ireland next time and I hope they will behave in a civilised and sporting manner…..however, we are not holding our breaths……they are such an ignorant lot..
The times we're living in are disgusting 🤔🤔
Have No misconceptions here, the USA team knew that the NY fans were going to act like animals. In my opinion they actively encouraged it. MUPPETS all of them.
They cant even speake there minds .personaly i would never play in another democrat state again
The European’s (Fitz, Tommy and Tyrell) were as restrained and diplomatic as they could be but be in no doubt, in Ireland, Scotland, England and throughout Europe, golf fans know what is expected, where the line is and how to recognise great play and respect the etiquette of the game. The rowdies and abusers, and their defenders, have no place in golf. America, under Trump, and its PGA leadership are circling the drain. 😖🤯
They have no class, we will show them in Ireland
It’s time to end the Ryder Cup , it attracts people to golf who have no place being anywhere near the sport
America is a destination unworthy of hosting major sporting events and Europe should seek more worthy opponents who have spectators that can be trusted to uphold the values and traditions of the sport and understand sportsmanship.
Fleetwood, what a cop out. No one is asking 50,000 fans to be behave. What an obvious statement. We’re asking 50,000 fans not to throw beer at the competitors and make comments about their wives. We’re asking 50,000 competitors not to tell our star player to fuck off. You could’ve said that. Was there an entire group of people telling Rory to fuck off? You’re OK with that you prepared for that that’s great. See you at the next one.
It's sad to see how these lads struggle to say what they want to say because they know the media will pounce on them for every wrong word.
Let's move on…. Keep our standards as the real world
Tommy hit the nail on the head – it wasn’t the boorish atmosphere as such, it was the personal comments directed at the players. I know Tommy himself was subjected to abuse about his older wife for example. That behaviour is stepping over the line and has no place in any sports, let alone golf.
the united states of Israhell has once again embarrassed itself. What a shithole this once great nation has become..
