Our look back at the Irish Open.
The rhythm of the swing never changes. Is it long enough? They’re beginning to applaud and quite rightly show. That is a simply magnificent shot from Colin Montgomery. [Applause] Glory is the winner. [Music] Not a million miles away, is it? Hello and welcome to another episode of Talk Golf Scotland. Today I am joined by Peter Whiteford. Good morning. And Donald Mai. Good morning. Andy. Andy’s not here today. It’s a shame. Yep. He’s away. Don’t know what he’s doing. Do you? He’s getting a perm. He’s getting a perm. He’s He actually is getting a perm. Um, as always, we are brought to you by Brabban Finance, your Scottishbased trusted finance broker for small and mediumsiz companies in the UK and also Tailor Made, uh, the home of Fargiving Golf Clubs, helping small and medium-sized golfers in the UK, as well as large and extra large golfers. Hey, Donald. Oh, yeah. Means a lot to help me forgiveness. Uh, okay. So, Peter, you were here. You weren’t here last week. Uh, no. I was in the the Czech Republic with the Scottish seniors um sort of um performance coach for them. So, I was out there at the Czech Republic playing the but they were playing the European the amateur seniors European Championships. So, um is that what they call it? The European Amateur Seniors European Championship. I might have just put a little couple extra words in there. Extra European. Yeah. Um but yeah, we would like that one stricken from the history books a little. It was a bit it was a calamity for Scotland out there. Um so to sort of talk you through what really happened um if you don’t understand the system basically what happens is there’s there’s six players um and you play two rounds qualifier to then get seated into the match play uh groups and you need five out of your six scores to count um to to put to get you seated. Um, so our first three groups, uh, first three guys went out in the morning, shot their scores. Um, not brilliant, but anyway, they did what they did. And then the afternoon guys went out and one of them was ill. So he got, he was had a fever. He managed, he was, he was flagging all day. Um, anyway, cut long story short, he walked in with about nine, six, nine holes to go. Um, totally struggling. Had to go and see a doctor. Um, and within five minutes of him walking in, literally, um, we then heard rumors that one of our morning guys scorecards might be signed incorrectly. [Laughter] So, yeah, as opposed to him going 3 four, he signed for 4-3 on a on a stretch of holes. Um, so yeah, the rumors were about, so I had to run in, take him in, uh, show him the card and yeah, no, um, no arguments. Yeah, straight off DQ for him. So you need five scores out six to count. We could only post four. So straight into the DQ. So um we were very um gutted. So all the guy, you know, cuz these guys work all year to get into this the biggest tournament of the year for these guys. Um and so yeah, everyone everyone’s very very angry and we booked flights and we’re off home basically. So we’re sat there just just everyone’s depressed, ready to come home. And then actually one of the guys comes out with this finds a loophole in the system and says well technically speaking it’s just a qualifier to seed you into max play. So so is there any chance we could remain? And the reason for this being because for the first well the reason this was important is because the first year ever um they were having a promotion demotion for some of the smaller nations that want to get into the European. So the the if you if you were 20th to 23rd you would be demoted which if we were stayed where we were we were demoted. So, it’s not so much we messed up this year, we would no longer be allowed to play next year. So, it was just a it was an absolute calamity, but we found a loophole that said, “Yes, you just qualify last. You go into the C groupoup playing against um not so much good players, but um that’s what we had to do.” So, um look, we Yeah. So, we breezed through the the the match play ties um and we finished 17th, which is the highest we could have finished. Which which countries did you play against in there? Oh, well, strangely Portugal, they were the first team we played. Um, and then Slovakia was the second team we played. So, yeah, look, it was um, you know, the matches were done early. It wasn’t um, no disrespect to them. They’re just not they’re countries that don’t um, have as much talent as us. You know, we play against some middle handicappers at times. Um so um yeah, look, credit to the guys that they played with a a professionalism. Um they even in the second round of the qualifier, we knew we were we were not going to qualify. They still went out and and you know, they didn’t hit the ball in the run or anything stupid. They were I have to I have to say I was quite proud of them in that respect. Um and in the match by ties, we you know, it was easy victories. You know, you’re talking eight and sevens and six and fives and stuff. So um but they did it in the right way. They didn’t um they didn’t do it like cheekily or anything which could have been quite easy. So we’re back in next year. Um which is good. And you as my father would say there’s it’s learning curves and you’ll always you know you learn from these mistakes. Um it was just a five minutes of madness. It wasn’t really I mean it wasn’t really it was really a mistake. I mean well you can learn from signing your card and doublechecking your your little You’ve done it before. I’ve done that. I’ve done that. Absolutely. Um, and then even even the gentleman that walked in, he didn’t know any of this. You know, if he’d known this, I would have gone and pushed his trolley for the last six hours or if you’re if you’re ill, you’re ill. Yeah. And the other flip of the coin would been, you know, if he’s really that ill, which he was, then you know, you need to preserve your energy for tomorrow. So, off you go. Get into your bed, get some get a doctor, and hopefully you can play tomorrow. So, yeah. Look, there’s there’s less golf. Sorry, can I golf’s a funny game, isn’t it? Like that. But it was a one in a million. This stuff just doesn’t happen. This is two London buses. It happens to Scotland. It happened to Scotland. It’s It’s funny how though like you can get disqualified for something that isn’t to do with your game, you know? It’s like golf is like Yeah, it hasn’t. His score, his total score is absolutely spot on, but it’s just marked in the wrong order. You get DQed for scorecard admin stuff, which is And does that happen in any other sport? Can you think of another sport where admin, you know? Noah Jovovich did he get DQed because he I don’t know sat in the wrong seat or didn’t sign didn’t sign as I don’t know. Yeah. No. And just to go back to the rule itself. So he got disqualified basically for the one hole. So the four and the three were the wrong way around. So the one hole he marked as less he scored as so you don’t get disqualified if you put a four when you made the three. You just have to accept the four. Yes. You accept the four. But the three for the four you’ve signed for a long a lower score on that hole. So, um, look, I mean, I knew straight off the bat it was DQed, but we were in by the refs and I was just like the refs were just looking at us giving joy. Who who saw it? How did they work it out? How did it Uh, so one of the guys from another team, I guess it could be as innocent as how do you not have the honor there? I thought you said you made three and 16 and the Scottish guy was pegging. What was that all about? We don’t know. Somebody just noticed cuz in the in the in the clubhouse your scores are up and all individual scores in the holes are up there. I’m sure nobody’s got um nobody was sitting there trying to DQ people and look look look look. Yeah, there was no malice involved. I I don’t believe. Um so yeah, it was just how would you know? Yeah, there obviously be one of the guys he’s played with that’s possibly would you know by the way would you have looked at it that closely though like No, probably not. No, you would you would know score and that would be it. Yeah, it’s very strange that it was spotted. Yeah, cuz the markers obviously it’s him that’s written it down that way, you know. Uh, and Robert’s just obviously gone and looked at the total. Yeah, it was it wasn’t even the marker. It was the guy from the other team. But look, it’s Yeah, there’s no blame to be had anywhere. Um, these things happen. I’ve been DQed for that. I think as an amateur, a pro. I can’t remember. I’ve been DQ for everything. I don’t to be honest. Um, cheating everything. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. But it was one of those things. Um, yeah, it was it was a horrible week, but at the same time, I was proud of the guys for what they did. Um, and they managed to do it in a professional way. And uh and to be honest, you know, some of these lower ranked countries, if you call it, like a Slovakia, you know, it was like a pleasure. They don’t get to play against teams like Scotland, you know, they qualify with the lower countries and then all of a sudden we pop up in the match playing. They get to see good golf, do you know what I mean? So that it was it was learning for them as well and and and the guys did it in the right way and um you know, there’s no sort of like massive gimmies given, you know, they played it in the right in the right manner, I thought. Um good. So, okay. All in all, an awful week, but um you know, we can get ourselves together and go on to the homes next week and hopefully produce something better. Yes. Hopefully. Okay. Don, what’s the what’s the what’s the worst disqualification you’ve ever had? Have you been disqualified ever? I don’t know whether I have actually. Never been disqualified for anything. Don’t think so. I got disqualified once at the Scottish Scottish under 25s for using a different compression ball. That’s cuz you ran out of the real ones. I was using like a tight list the black number and I changed the red number. I didn’t mean to. I just I was an amateur. I didn’t really I used different You’d lost the ball. I I think I’ve I’ve broken about every rule in golf, you know. I mean, I’ve had I’ve had um I’m sure I signed for the wrong card. I definitely remember in the Scottish boys, I think maybe even the one you Oh god, can’t believe I’m bringing this up. the one you won or something that I’m pretty sure I didn’t swap my card in the first T and saw that I didn’t shoot at 74. I was 76 or 7. Yeah, that’s right. What’s that? He won the match play. All right. Okay. So, it wasn’t that one. Um and I’ve been given shots penalties for um I remember I was leading the Italian Open. I was telling the guys cuz we had things out there. Anyway, um when they changed from club length preferred lies to scorecard prefer. I remember you getting disqualified. No, I didn’t get DQed. I It was the second fairway I remembered and I was like, I don’t know what I did in the first, so I had to take a G shot penalty. So, um, yeah, I’ve had lots of little I didn’t get DQed for that. And obviously, I got EQ in India for um kicking my ball or whatever, whatever people want to call it and the ball moving when I wasn’t looking at it. So, yeah, I mean, I’ve I’ve had a fair old I could write a book about all my sort of misdemeanors, but none of them have been deliberate, thankfully. Oh, well. Um, anyway, let’s let’s move on. Donald, what you been doing this week? getting exciting. Just working hard. Working hard. Didn’t play any golf. Didn’t have time. Just doing too many hours. So, I’m having a quiet week this week. That’s good. Watching the rugby and it’s amazing actually. Scotland seem to be better football than rugby now. You know, we’re not. Yeah, we unlucky we unlucky with the draw, but we didn’t play great at rugby. The draw is awful. We watched the game actually cuz our flight was delayed. The draw is awful. We got South Africa who are now arguably one of the best teams in the world and Ireland who is the best team in the world and we’re only two teams to get through. Well, South Africa favorites. Yeah. Why are they so terrifying South Africans? I mean like big. They’re just massive. They’re just they they eat steaks for breakfast. That’s what they do over there, isn’t it? Yeah, we take their we take some of their players that can’t play. But um they’re nasty pieces of work as well. I wouldn’t trust them. Do you know what I mean? You wouldn’t trust us African. We need to play fast game. And it just we never Their defense was This isn’t a rugby podcast, but their defense was phenomenal. Ah, but we the couple of chances we had we didn’t take either, did we? We didn’t have many. No, I know. But that’s but they knew they weren’t going to get many and they had to take them and they they had that rush. They were only good at line outs and oh the line ruffle but they had that rush defense in the middle of the park as well and it took out Finn Russell and all his fancy stuff. So look they did their homework but let’s not talk about let’s not talk about rugby in the much better as I say we’re much better at football anyway. Do you know what I mean? We’re one of the best team and hopefully talking about the football next week. Yeah. Okay. Let’s move on to golf then. Uh the Irish Open. Um, before we go into actual golf, right, is is it in is it in a strange spot in the calendar, the Irish Open? You know, for me, the Irish Open is like it should be one of the premier events in the European tour because of the crowds, because of the because of Rory Moy, because the players they’ve got, because of the courses they’ve got, and it’s stuck here after Ryder Cup qualifications ended, before the RDER Cup. Uh, it just feels like it’s in no man’s land. It should be in the middle of the summer. It should be right next to the Scottish Open. Really, shouldn’t it Well, when the guys are all over here and it should be in a Lynx golf course cuz Ireland are fully good lynx golf courses. I was listening to an American podcast. I quite like listening to American podcast because I think the Americans like they overanalyze everything, don’t they? Oh, definitely. They over I mean, God, you you would not be good in an American podcast, but they do. They look at things to the Americans are just different to us. I mean, even when you hear I’ve said before about Jordan Smith talking about his golf like or Mikkelson talking about his golf, they talk about it in a way that I’ve never even considered ever. And I’ve never heard like any players over this side of the pond talking about it. But yes, these American golf podcasts certainly a lot of them over over analyze. I find it quite interesting though. But anyway, um but they were talking about the Irish Open and the K Club saying it’s crap. You know, why are we playing at the K Club? I I watch it and think it looks quite it does the course looks okay. Yeah, it does and it showed up. It played quite well at the weekend here. But yeah, but Ireland’s fully great links courses. Yeah. And one of them said, one of them said, “Wouldn’t it be great if we had a link swing, you know, round about the open?” You know, you played the Irish Open, the Scottish Open obviously, and maybe an English Open or something or the British Masters became involved and you had like a four or five week stretch where we were just playing golf on some of the best courses. It would be great. And I mean that that’s what they’re introducing next year. They’re talking about all these the five different swings that they’ve got in Europe. Yeah. In the in the DP World Tour. So, it would be great if they had that link swing, wouldn’t it? I I think it’d be brilliant. Uh because and it you know, you would you would get a lot of the Americans maybe watching it because they like watching links golf and they don’t have it over there. So, I think the only way it’s going to happen though is is if the money cuz we the money from the states come over if it becames a PGA Tour link swing. Yeah. The best players coming over. It’s becoming that way any but the PG tour the Americans love Ireland, don’t they? They just love Irish people. They love Scottish people. They’re not that fussed in the English, but you know, they do. They love this. Yeah. They love the golf courses. They love Lynx golf. And I I just think and and it would make sense before if it if the these three events you’re talking about happened before the open cuz the Americans would come over to play in it then to prepare themselves for it. You know, we talked we talked the last podcast I was on and we certainly talked about the way that the European tour try and make these um funny events like the mixed events or the the shot clock or the whatever walking through beer tent events. Um having just making it simple cuz we’re all agreeing that none of those are good. But if you had the link swing, which is just changing the golf courses itself, that’s maybe enough on its own to to hold the interest of of of the foreigners and hopefully have them come over and play. That may be enough just to see it. rather than based on one week or the Scottish Open is kind of the same but if it was you could actually see who was the best players on links you know if they were playing week after week but the year the PGA tour at that time is pretty dull you know between the US Open and the open it’s like the travelers the Rocket Mortgage and the deer dear the John Deere then it’s the 3M you know it’s like they’ve got a a little lull in the summer and we definitely have a lull I mean the European tour well if we’re if we’re going to go into scheduling I mean this year above any other year I’ve ever seen. It’s probably the worst scheduling I’ve ever seen on the DP tour. You know, you’ve got um well, five weeks. Yeah, you got the Irish, then this is all post um Ryder Cup selection. So, you got the Irish, you’ve got Wentworth um which is the biggest one. Um and then you’ve got the French, which arguably should be one of the biggest ones and and historically have been Yeah. I mean, the biggest ones. These three, what are they not doing in that fivewe break? I I don’t get it. Um yeah, it it just needs a revamp. It needs a rethink and a um actually I think I think the Lynx golf’s a great idea. Great. It’ll be a great thing to bring people come and play it. Yeah. And just keep it away from the K Club. Stick it at K Club’s a great golf course. It’s all It’s all money, isn’t it? Well, it is. But yeah, and next year they’re going to Roy Kennedy. Uh which dying again. Yeah. Uh Royal County D which I’ve played it is is fantastic. I played the the British amateur the one year. It’s really good. Um so you know but there’s so many good golf courses. Yeah. Yeah. Absolutely. Like Yes. Absolutely. I think I think the Irish I don’t think it has to be playing a links but I think it’s a good idea of what you’re saying um to get it on that that rotor of links golf courses. It might make a change to the European tour. Yeah. We need to get you on committee in the European tour. Me? Yeah. We get you in a scheduling committee. J they’d have me. No. Oh, no. They definitely wouldn’t have you. But uh Yeah. But yeah, that Irish Open isn’t even a Rolex event. It is a slightly bigger money one. Yeah, it was just over a million dollars first prize. So that’s that’s a big money event. It is. Yeah. Sorry. How much? Million dollars. Yeah, it was a $6 million price. It was a $6 million event. Most the Rolex events are nine. Most European tour events are sort of 1 to2 million. So it was kind of elevated in money, but yeah, just at the wrong at the wrong time. Um, but anyway, the golf well our guy Grant Forest was up there. We seem to you had Connor Stein up there last week. Connor Ste actually had a top 10 again, but Grant Forest was in with a chance to win this week. He was he was a real good chance actually was right in amongst it that the the boy that won at Vincent Dorman obviously got to 14 under early doors when all these guys were out in the golf course and it looked as though that had no chance uh and everybody just came back to him more or less. But you know I think everybody was surprised that 1400 eventually won it. Yeah. Yeah. I mean I wasn’t I wasn’t I didn’t watch it because it was in the airports and all the rest but it was um yeah looking at the scorecards Scottish guys were doing great. Um David Laws had a great uh I think he birded six out of the last seven holes or something to get himself up where he should be in the leader boards but but a lot higher up. Um but yeah the Scottish guys again are just doing fantastic isn’t they? I mean you can’t really sort of and the other one I was I was reasonably happy they had a good week. Not that he has to but was um Shane Lowry cuz you know we’re all talking about who should and shouldn’t have got picked for the RDER Cups. Um it’s not like he’s a standout. Definitely. He’s played great this year, but you know, he’s done okay in all the majors. He’s top 20 in all the majors, so he’s done okay in that respect, but he’s not really one. Not really had the heights, but he was up there again just showing form at the right time was all he had to do, and that’s what he did. It’s it’s again, for me, it’s a class thing. Like, I feel like he’s a class above. Oh, no. He’s in my he’s in my team all day long. I’m not saying anything against that. I’m just saying some people just want a little bit of why not Do you know what I mean? Well, there you go. There’s Shane. He’s just just rocked up and beat Maron. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. He’s come over from the States. It’s amazing how often that happens. I mean, this guy Vincent Norman Norman Vincent Norman Norman uh he um he’s a PJ tour player really. I mean, he’s he’s won on the PJ tour this year. I know it was a co-anction co-sanctioned one, but um yeah, just he’s kind of like do you know what? Like see if this was like we were picking the Rder Cup team in two weeks time, he would be thinking about this guy now. That’s him won two of the last five European tour events. Yeah, he’s he’s in, you know, but you pick he’s gone, but I mean he wasn’t even in my thoughts. But but this is the problem. We’ve got Wentworth and we’ve got France coming up. So I don’t know whoever wins those should have been. Imagine somebody who wins from nowhere in the next two weeks wins two weeks in a row. Why do why do they have to pick it so early? to get their jacket sizes, you know, tailor that, you know, give them time to get the right fits. There will be a lot of admin stuff that like pictures and names and leaderboards and yeah, there’ll be a reason for it. I’m sure that’s above our PlayStation, but but yeah, it does seem early or or you have these events. Why could these events not have been earlier? They just Exactly. That that that’s the biggest thing. These these are these are you had that 5 weeks old whether it’s I hate talking about oh back in my day but but those were the ones you looked at the start of the year if I get into those events that’s it that’s the start of my schedule and I’ll fill the rest in you know those are the events you’re like yes they’re the daddies do you know what I mean even even if they’re not yeah and even if they’re not in terms of the prize fun cuz a couple of years ago the Irish Open prize fund was pretty poor I think from memory but it’s got crowds it’s got atmosphere and look as a player I would sooner play in a place with with atmosphere than I would for more money. I mean, I don’t tell so many lies, doesn’t it? I I would like to think I would prefer that. I I certainly prefer watching it. I mean, when there’s an atmosphere that I find the the tournaments in Dubai and that dull. They’re really dull. I mean, we’ll watch them because in December, there’s nothing else in the telly and there’ll be some good players there, but they’re not the same as watch. We have the best events in the UK. Always, don’t we? It’s never changed. the Scottish Open, the Irish Open, and the British M because of the crowds. Yeah, you you keep saying this, but watching it, the crowds don’t doesn’t affect me one way or another. It’s the crowds in the fields. It’s the golf the golf I’m watching. I’m not watching the crowds. I’m not to see Oh, the we No, but there’s an atmosphere, Donald. There’s an atmosphere. It comes through your telling. Oh, it doesn’t I don’t agree. Did you like watching the football when when there was no crowds in the stadiums? It didn’t make any difference to you. Didn’t make that much of a difference. No, to be fair, Donald’s stubborn enough he’s stuck with this argument for the last 3 years. Didn’t make any difference. Well, I I quite happily watch football through co every year. I I like would bother me. I know. She’s so stubborn. Well, I I much prefer watching when there’s like the Dunhill’s dull for me. Like I I think playing it would be a huge difference playing with crowds there. That makes a difference cuz you can see them. They care more. They’re excited get more excited because the crowds are there. They don’t get excited when there’s nobody there. Watching it in TV makes no difference to me. Well, you’re not getting changed. I mean, he’s stubborn. I mean, he’s even more stubborn than I am. Yeah, the more I argue. He taught me. That’s why I’m stubborn and I can’t He’s going to start saying he hates crowds if you keep going. I actually don’t like crowds. I hate you is what I’m saying. But yeah, I think we put on the best events. I do. Yeah. But look, another thing, sorry, another thing on the schedule thing. I’ve said it before, but I wish the I wish the BMW was our tour championship. That was the end of the season. I feel like the Americans actually have it right. I feel like this this should be the end of crescendo. Who’s going to win the order? You know, that’s it. At the BMW, what is the last event? Do we know what the last event? Dubai thingy. Oh, of course. Dubai. Yeah. Yeah. So, I mean, they’re still playing for things like they’re still playing for I mean, I don’t even I should know these things, but I’m pretty sure they once you get to Dubai, um there are different pools. It’s like where I’ve just come back from I think if you’re in the top I don’t know 15, you play for an extra massive pool or whatever. So, they’re still playing for stuff. They’re also playing for this top 10 as well. Correct. For the US tour card. But anyway, back to the Irish quickly before we move off it. Rory was Rory, look, I didn’t know he was going to He was all strapped up a couple of weeks ago. Um and and look whether he I think he was obviously fine. Um and he was up there. He was up there after two three rounds and just a bad last day. But birdie the first in the last day and I thought there you go. Yeah. He was he was right in amongst it. He was one back. Yeah. Yeah. But he had a double bogey and about the I mean I was just a scorecard watcher. That’s all I could do. So double bogey and an eight. He hit that in the water three times with short irons. It’s not it’s not good. But you get the feeling. And it was either a win or who cares. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. But but hitting on the water three times with short irons is not good. No, no, no. That’s not That’s not great. It’s just Rory. It’s It’s Rory versus We’ve just watched Tiger dominate golf the way golf dominated. You know what I mean? Tiger would have finished if he didn’t win it, he would have finished second, third. Rory can drop way down. It’s just the type of guy he is. We’ve just watched the best in the world for decades just finishing. But not many of these top guys hit it in the water as often with short irons. Yeah. Okay. I mean we bit worrying. Uh can’t remember how much water there is it in Italy. Italy. Yeah. Not much. Yeah. He wasn’t he didn’t really have a chance did he at that stage did he? Well no but no at 16 he was gone by then. But he just didn’t get it going. I don’t know. Berdalin have been providing commercial finance solutions to UKmemes since 2013. Berdalin driving your business forward. What I was going to say, what you had mentioned the top 10 thing, right? So the top 10. So, the top 10 European golfers on the order are the race to Dubai. I’m never going to be able to say this DP World Tour and Race to Dubai. Top 10 that aren’t already exempt. So, they get the European tour card PGA Tour cards for next year, which we thought was happening last year, but they didn’t. They changed it. They must have changed it. Yes. Uh they didn’t. But anyway, so they’re all going this year. Um but it’s I find it it’s a strange one, right? Because it’s such a big deal. must be such a big deal for the players because the players that are on the bubble for that must be like I need to hold on to this thing this place must mean so much to them and yet it’s not something the European tour or the DP world tour is ever going to really push why would you go this is such so so exciting who’s going to win the tickets to leave this tour they’ve still got to play x amount of events in Europe as well I think haven’t I don’t think it’s they’re solely over there I think they’ve still got to play a few events in Europe do I think so. All right. Well, yeah, but in order to keep your European tour card or what about if you just say stuff this, I’m off. I don’t know that. I don’t I don’t I don’t think that’ll be the case. They’ll be Yeah, cuz Well, cuz they won’t be able to say stuff that cuz then if they lose their card over there, they’ll be gone completely, right? So, they might have some sort of clause if you want you have to play X amount events over here as well. I’m pretty sure that’s the case. Going back to Stuart’s point about the the DP tour not promoting this like like we promote it. I mean yeah I mean it’s obvious why they’re not promoting it because it is just it’s just showing how much of a feeder tour it really is. But um yeah I mean I would love to see a we side leaderboard at the you know like um a side leaderboard like you would get in the FedEx or you know the running to it and oh that’s him dropped up and dropped down up two places into that. Yeah, there may well be that. Actually I think I think it’s much more exciting than the race to Dubai. Who who cares if Maroy wins that or John Ram, you know, like this is more exciting. Like who’s on the bubble at the moment. We’ve got um I’ll tell you the players that are going. Moron’s definitely going to go. Perez is going. He’s been quiet, isn’t he? Perez. Mhm. Um Minu Lee is going. I thought he already had a PJ tour. Probably has, well, he doesn’t because he’s got a he’s got a PJ tour sign. Maybe he’s got a No, he got one of those part part memberships. Um Alexander Borkc who they were going on a bit last week who’s Swedish as well. He’s um our most consistent golfer I think this year just about. He’s got some absolutely a top 10 machine. Uh Big Bob, uh you Lton Torb Olen, Yanick Paul, Thristen Lawrence from South Africa and Marcel Seam is the sort of bubble boy just now. So those guys are all off to America. Then you’ve got like Lazabal, Langask, and Camp Pillow just outside there. Nicholas Hogard, Nikolai Hogard is out just outside there as well. I think Nikolai Hogard maybe has a sort of a part membership as well. He’s second in one of these joint events. But but yeah, it’s uh these guys are all away. So, you know, next year it’s every year is going to be different, isn’t it? Yeah. Well, it’ll be it’ll be interesting to see as say how many events we’ve got got to play over here. How many of them will keep their tour cards over there? Are you sure of that thing you’re saying? I’m pretty sure. Yeah, they’ve got to if they’re going to take up this PJ membership, they’ve got to play events in Europe. Yeah, they’ve got to play a few. I’m pretty sure I’ll Peter will Google it once we’re finished cuz he’s good in Google. All right. Uh but but I mean these top guys play a lot in Europe anyway, don’t they? If they win their first PJ tour event, though, they’re not going to do that, are they? Maybe not. Unless they want to just support the European tour. Do you know it’ be interesting. Do you think they’ll all take it up or do you think they’ll be if like say let’s say a Laafabal or something that gets the card you maybe go well I quite enjoy just playing in Europe. Do you think that the money is too great that they’ll go over there and play? Um personally I think you’d be mad but I can see it. I can see someone like Lathab. Um, I don’t know why I picked it out him just you probably picked the one guy that that that I would think about that in terms of his game for the States. He’s not that long, but he’s won nine times or something in in Europe or he just keeps winning every year. Um, I don’t think he would win in the States, but um, you’ve got to be looking also at his age and and just it’s just money. I mean, he’ll be he’s all of a sudden playing for millions. These guys, a lot of these guys have been playing on the European Tour for years and never made that jump up, you know, like you Lon. I mean, he’s always been a good European Tour player, but he’s never performed in a major when the big bucks are the big guys come along or never go never been over at the states. And there’s never an opportunity. So, Stuart, I mean, it’s always easy. You’re just picking on four tournaments of the year that he’s got to produce in the majors. I’m just Well, surely their goal is to become one of the best players in the world. So they’re just saying they’ve never, you know, he’s a he’s a guy of how how old is you? 35 maybe. He’s the same age as me. I thought he’d be bit older than that. He’d be 40 almost. I don’t know. I’m just saying that there’s um I could see some of them thinking, you know, I’m quite happy here in the in Well, that’s that’s the question. But I suppose if they’ve got a full tour card, they can dip in and out a we bit. I suppose they can pick and choose. I I think there will be. Does it get them to designated events? No. No. They’d have to then make the step up and win win win something or I I think at some stage in people’s lives, kids and that does come into you know if you’re reasonably wealthy. He’s on the kids again. No, but if you’re reasonably wealthy, well off, uh like Pablo Pablo haven’t got kids, I don’t think, but something like that. He’s reasonably wealthy, well off, happy, um enjoys his life. um your kids are that age, you don’t really want to want want to be away for a whole year missing out and this that and the other. It get that will come into their brains. I I don’t think you can I think I think the game is becoming a lot more get get and get done the younger you are get in and and blast it before any of this stuff comes in. And I can see that being an element they would have to think about. Not saying it would definitely change their mind and go, “Yeah, no, actually I won’t bother cuz I’ve got a I’ve got a six and a sevenyear-old at home or something that it has to come into your brain.” Yeah, I mean money money is not everything and these guys are reasonably wealthy anyway. So, you know, money is not absolutely everything. I think it’ll come into some of their brains, but for some of you guys like that you named at the front there, no, cuz they’re young enough and they just they just go at that age, don’t you? You don’t think morons and all that. They don’t care. Like 23 or whatever they are. Do you know what I mean? You just go. Like 31. Yeah. All right. He’s a bad example. He’s a really bad example saying Yeah. Perez. I don’t know these all he’s probably 35 now you said that in it. Um I just think there comes a stage in life where you just go I don’t know I don’t know yeah I’m quite happy with my lot and if you if you’re playing first division football and so you know you’ve got for Premier League. Yeah. You’re not just going to go now I’m quite happy here with my wife and my kids in this we town we’re living in. I’m I’m not moving to Manchester United. you know, you’re going to go for the bigger money and the bigger chance and the chance to promote. Yeah. Progress in your career. Surely most people will go. Yeah. Well, I think 99% of them, but there might be one. Yeah, there might be. There might be one then. That’s that’s all the only question I was asking. It might be one or two max. Would you think you were told to go and run a driving range way out in uh such a bad example? No, you had to run a driving range way out in Timbuktu for a couple of years and it was for two years. Why would I do that? I Well, can you get off the ground first? You’re making much more money. Wait, you’d make way more. They’re giving you a a decent hefty for life. Go over there. Even though all your kids are at that age where actually some of them still like you, but maybe not so much when you come home. I’m thinking about sold. Brilliant. See you. Bye, Lizzy. Oh, she could come. She could I could bring take the kids out. No, you’re not. Well, what you taking all the kids out of school? Bring them all over to Timbuktu where the weather schooling is not as good. There’s guns in the schools out in Timbuktu and all that mind. Oh, well, I didn’t know I was going to worse place, but I mean that’s what America is. Well, move on. Yeah, we go a bit deep into that. I’m just saying there might be a thought. I’m not saying it would change their minds. Okay. Um, do you want to talk Rder Cup before we go? Peter, you were away last week when we talked Ryder Cup. you want anything you want to say about Ryder Cup and the I see the Americans were over in Italy um having a we sort of get together a couple of notable absentes but who was who was absent I saw the photo be and like shley or something or can’t was it they weren’t there but yeah most most of them were there Jim Furick there in his 1999 Rder Cup sure shot Mhm. I saw that. It was the first thing I noticed. My son, why were these guys playing anyway? These old boys. No. And no know what annoyed me about the photograph. And I don’t know why annoyed me. There was all all the guys there. It was a lovely photograph. And Justin Thomas there’s hat on backwards in the clubhouse. Why does that annoy you? Just annoys me. Just guys, he’s no 15. Get your hat on the right way. Take it off. You’re in the clubhouse. just annoyed me. I love it. I love it. I love it. Just annoyed me. Just like you just look like a N. It’s just the way of life these days. I know. Well, but that annoyed me. He’s allowed to annoy me. I know. I know. Some people like keeping the standards and people let it go. But um and and to be honest, without people like you, Donald, we’d all be walking about in football shots in the golf course. But um yeah, it is fine. Yeah, look, it’s good good team, I suppose, for them going over there. They’ve got nothing to play in. I mean, literally there’s there’s two Americans playing next week. As in not this week, next week, isn’t it? Um or is it this week? Can’t remember. There’s only um who was it this week. Justin Thomas and Max Homer are playing. The rest of them aren’t going to play golf till the Cup in terms of competitiveness. Yeah. Know that’s that’s obviously we’re messaging back and forth last night and uh the French Open is the only place that they can go and play. Yeah. And I I went through the entry list for the French Open. None of them are there unless there there’s there’s still eight invites to get to be named. So whether whether there’s a couple and they’ll play in that or not, I don’t know. But it does seem like quite a long period of inactivity before the Ryder Cup. You would definitely be rusty, wouldn’t you, Pete? No, I’d be rusty. Did they not WD40 and everything? When the PJ Championship used to be later on in the year, was it not pretty much PJ Championship then almost straight to the RDER Cup? Yeah, almost. But yeah, I don’t know. I don’t know. I think you can play too much golf le and I can think you can play not enough golf and I think I think our schedule’s rubbish, but at least our guys get to play BMW Wentworth. Um I don’t think many will play the French, but I might be 100% wrong at that. I’ve not looked at the the the list, but you know, BMW, every single one of our guys is playing this week. Every single one in the team is playing. Um I think that’s a great thing. Um keep us going. you you can practice and you can prepare and you can do all this. I just think competitive edge sometimes is is is a good thing. Playing in front of crowds is a good thing. Playing just keeping it’s the mental edge. It’s not it’s not rusty in terms of their golf swings. Obviously, the golf swings ain’t rusty. Listen, if they’re not going to be up for the RER Cup, you’re not going to be up for anything. So, I I don’t think it’ll be I just It’s mental edges. That’s the only thing I I see when I say rusty all these times. It’s just the mental edges, nothing else. Um, I think we we we’re as bad as our scheduling is, it’s worked out for us in that respect, but um, just an opinion. I don’t know. It was the same. It was the same in 2021 in the whipped ass, so I don’t think it’ll make that much odds. Do you um care as much as you used to care about the RDER Cup? Mhm. I don’t mean care about the event because it’s still the the best event in golf, but you do you remember like like when it was Sevy and Elazabal and they were fighting with Pauling or about some changing their compression of their ball or or when Paven was putting on the show. Yeah. Or Yeah. just when when we didn’t have as good when we were definite underdogs and we had like the top five guys and then it was like you know like David Guilford and Steven Richardson and you know Mark Mark James Howard Clark and these guys and they were absolutely European tour people that you basically the Americans never saw and we were the underdogs and for me it was it was nastier and I and I loved it more. I I know I wanted us to win more then than I do now. I think I just I don’t know. I know. I still I think when it’s on, it’s just the best view in every two years. So, yeah, still get into it. Still definitely get into it. Totally see where you’re coming from in terms of um you know, they’re all out there playing American, you know, Fleetwood’s pals with whoever the shley or whatever it might be. They’re a bit more pat, but as soon as soon as that gun goes off on th Friday morning, you’ll be like, I love this event. It’s the best event ever. And Right. And okay, the last Ryder Cup wasn’t close. So there wasn’t ever going to be the same hero cuz they just run away with it. But if it goes down to the wire, trust me, they’ll be playing as though they hate each other. That’s one of the biggest sporting events in in the planet, isn’t it? I think behind World Cup, rugby and football, and then it’s Red Cup, isn’t it? Roughly. I I don’t know what I don’t know how to articulate this, but I heard McInley talking about when he was the captain, he was trying he had to get Victor Dewisson on side and he was away and he was traveling half around the halfway around the world to meet Victor Dewisson to try and understand him better as an individual and then all the the to the nth degrees he went into working out his pairings and how that all works and I couldn’t help but think why, you know, like like this is a an exhibition match. What does the result mean, you know? I mean, I want it. Well, Paul McInley, you’re the captain. It’s that that that was his ultimate in his career. So, that’s there’s the answer to why. That’s the biggest thing Paul McKinley’s ever done. That and will be remembered for as well. Yeah. Yeah, that’s true. Yeah. And and a lot of these guys, you know, that’ll be the pinnacle of their career because they haven’t won majors, right? Not playing in the RDER Cup must be the next big thing. Yeah. Right. To a major for for a lot of these golfers. Oh, no. I understand that. Yeah. I mean, it’s the big it is the biggest event in golf. Um Yeah. I mean, I don’t agree really much with anything you’ve said. I just think it’s massive. It’s huge. It’s bigger than bigger than winning any major as far as I’m concerned that you get in the RDER Cup. And it’s it Well, maybe bigger than winning any major. Okay. Maybe not bigger winning a major. You’d rather win a major. But it it was it is it’s huge. It’s a team sport. There’s more there’s more n it just everything about it is just um tfold. Yeah. You you’ll remember it for the rest of your life just being involved at all. Even even even as a you know guys that are just you know vice captains and stuff like that just to be involved must be huge. Yeah. Yeah, people talk about if you win a major, for example, um you know, the money you get for winning the major, but then it’s just it’s the endorsements from there on in, you know, for the next year is quite hard to play apparently because you’re always get invited as the open champion or the US Open champion. This is what you’ll get invited as all the time. Red Cup player and whatever. It’s huge. Absolutely huge. And it’s big for the European tour is um what is it two/ird of their income for the year comes in this one week at least. That’s what it used to be. I’m pretty sure it’s at least that it’s three quarters or whatever. But um it’s it’s it’s it’s big business. Even though they’re not actually winning individually, they’re not winning any money. It’s big business. They’ll get money on the back of it. I understand all that. I mean, I agree with all that. I don’t But you just don’t care as much as you used to. You don’t think you know, I do care. I mean, when I watch I’m not saying I’m not going to sit down in front of the telly and absolutely watch every minute. I mean, every minute. I don’t I don’t watch every minute of even the Open, you know, but I watch every minute of the Red Cup if I can. Yeah. And yeah, and you and I will want them to win, you know, like but I don’t know. There’s something just Yeah, I don’t know what I’m trying to say really. I I think it’s huge. I hear what you’re trying to say. When we were underdogs, it seemed to be the more fight. But the European tour, it was the European Tour versus and the European Tour and the European Tour players versus the PJ tour and the PJ tour players. Now it’s it’s just it’s just a bunch of players. What does it mean then? You know, like I don’t know. I don’t know what I’m trying to say really. I just but the history of it is still there. You can see that in any sport like you know if you if you you brought football earlier if you went and interviewed the Scottish football team there’s there’s not many Scottish accents in there. There’s the Scottish rugby team there’s a few South African accents. There’s a couple of Australians. There’s that comes into a little bit. You know you go into the Rider Cup team there’s a bunch of American sounding accents cuz you’re they go college out there stay out there or they they get educated and yeah it’s great. It’ll be awesome. That’ll be awesome. Now going on to talking about the RER Cup and it’s like I said way at the start of the year I fancy Europe to win it and said that the last couple of weeks as well and now I’m thinking about the team and the pairings and you know in the past you always had natural pairings and you kind of knew who was going to play with each other. Don’t know who’s going to play with each other this time. That that worries me a we bit but they’ve turned it upside down now. They don’t do it like that anymore. They don’t think Oh, I mean the two that I think will play to each other that play with each other are best buddies are Sp and Thomas. I’m pretty sure they’ll be stuck. Yeah, I hope I hope they do cuz they’re not I’m talking about the European team. Yeah, but we’re talking about like Justin Thomas playing like horrendous golf. He’s not that bad. He’s not like missing cuts and everything. He is. He was not that many though. He’s he’s still an average 70th on tour. Like he’s a middle of the road PG tour player this year. He’d probably come over and play the Irish Open and finish fourth. Do you know that that’s the kind of level of golf he’s he’s at? He’s in been in a we bit of a downward spiral, Stu. No more than Lowry. Do you mean I I think I think I think times have changed when you’re talking about pairings ever so slightly. So you’re talking about McInley going out to seas. And by the way, he was big into stats anyway, but um they now got Eduardo Molinari um with his new um can’t what he calls it, but he’s got some sort of algorithm stat um thing that he made up himself. Um and a lot of the players abide by it and all the rest. And they’ll be using these things. So you’ll pair up, you know, for example, it’ll it’ll be down to the end like you said the Americans. It’ll be like you you’ll pair somebody that’s good at par threes or good with the wedges, you go with a long hair, so he’s got the wedge in. There’ll be all these sort of algorithms that go together. It will not just be because um such and such and such such are good mates. I don’t think I think those days are are gone. McInley can change that. Yeah. Yeah. Those days are gone and now it’s just down to and that’ll have come into the the selecting of the team in general. Um, so they’re going to stick with that sort of algorithm when it comes into the tournament. Do you ever think that some of that could be Although saying that last year? Sorry, you carry on. I was gonna say, do you ever think some of that can be over the top as well? Like you can you can put the best driver with the other guy and put them in the right holes and it should it should work. But then what if they hate what if they don’t like each other? What if the the chemistry is not there? You know, there is that as well, isn’t it? There’s a bit of that. There’s a human side. Yeah. But I I don’t know how many, you know, and that’s where the European team of good. I don’t know how many of them have actually hate each other. You know, they’ve always the team spirit’s always been better and that’s what the Americans are trying to get now with Mickelson and Tiger and stuff been away that’s been, you know, highly publicized. So, European teams always been better in that side of things. But it it’s funny. I mean, could you So, the the first eight it’s forums this time as opposed to four ball, which I think is much better actually anyway. Yeah. Absolutely. because they’ll get around quicker. But then the last few years, you know, you know, the first games start in the afternoon before the last game’s finished and stuff like that and I’ve had to reshuffle it. So for some in the morning makes much more sense anyway. They’ve got to play them both. But who’s who’s going to be the first eight players? Who’s that going to pick for Well, who’s two getting left out? You mean? Well, there’s four getting left out, but but yeah. Can you could you name them? Who who who do you think is going to play together? I I can’t name a team that’s a shoe in. Who who who out of our guys is going to play all five? Is Mroy gonna play all five? No, because he’s not fit at the moment. Obviously, is he Hovland? Hland mate, Ram. I mean, these are the obvious three. Yeah. But then you like Neber as well, don’t you? I don’t know. I I think I think it’s so easy to say that, but I still barely even know him. I mean, so so who’s who who is it who who do you think is the foresomes the the pairings for that first day? The first session is so important. I think you just got to throw out our strongest obviously. Who’s going to play with Ram? Well, I don’t know the pairings, but um um I need the team in front of me because I’m going to be an airhead here, but I would have Fitzpatrick out there. I would have Rory, Ram, Hovland. Um so that’s first four. Um, who’s the next best four in our team? I I think I think we’re we’re topheavy in our team. So, just put the top heavy out. Just do you know what I mean? Um, then I go I would have a best driver in the ball out there. So, and the golf course is similar really tight. I would I would have Fleetwood. I would pro I I would probably leave out Rose um if I’m honest in the first in the first eight. But um Yeah. So, you can see you can see Bob been left out. Yeah. Rose been left out. Yeah. Straka possibly left out. Hogard the Forsomes. Yeah. It’s easier to say just who usually leave out. But it’s funny. Historically, you always think about forsomes players being the Luke Donalds or the Francesco Molinari. You know, the the short hitters that hit it straight, don’t get in trouble. That’s a Forsomes player. And then then bring in Mickelson for the four balls. But it doesn’t it just doesn’t work like that, does it? Cuz they’re all quite good anyway. Yeah. But that’s still it was highly sort of things that that was what Fitzpatrick was touted as four two ball force and that’s what he’s good at. That’s so boring. He makes so many birthdays cuz he puts spells. So just get him out. Get him out. Just it’s just I don’t know. I I don’t think we can sit here and say what the you know I know but but in years going by you could have couldn’t you? Seasel be together. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Well are there even any two players from the same country playing? I can’t even think anymore either. Fleet. Well, there’s five English ones. Frozen Fleetwood, Hatton, Rose, Fitzpatrick. Oh, there’s another. Yeah. Yeah. Fleetwood Fitzpatrick sounds like a nice one. I don’t know. They They all sound pretty good. I mean, these pair them up. Go go go go enjoy yourselves. They they’ll do grand. I think as you say, there’ll be more to it than that. Of course they will. Of course they will. I mean, hopefully like the one thing that they messed up last year or it was it was it was told or told to us that it was messed up was one of the pairings in the first day. They didn’t even have I haven’t even played with that golf ball before, you know, cuz they obviously have to play with their opponents with your partner’s ball and can’t remember who it was. Was it like Lowry and somebody or something like Oh, he’s never used it. I don’t know tight list or something. It’s like what? But that must happen all the time. Even in the practice range, they weren’t. Yeah. Hopefully these algorithms are better than that. Practice with it at least. Well, that’s right. Do you know there was somebody, wasn’t there? There was a story. I can’t remember what it was, but yeah, it affects the flight of the ball. I don’t know. Haven’t used it enough in practice. And I don’t mean like the practice round on Tuesday before going to be practicing with these balls for for two, three weeks leading into this, but in my opinion, don’t know. But anyway, it’s going to be brilliant. Yeah, they’re just a track man session before they went out. Surely would be enough. Yeah, maybe. But then you don’t know how it comes out. They’re rough and stuff like there’s loads. There’s loads to it. Yeah, there is. There is a we bit to it, but that that’s getting quite technical. I’ve never heard of the best players in the planet are allowed to get technical. Yeah. You’ve never heard what? Such a lot of crap talk in all my life. Really? We just g you listen to that in American stuff. Right. People listen to this podcast. I feel like we’re all about to fall asleep. Yeah. Yeah. All I ask is who you thought was going to be the first persist and balls in the rough. Yeah. Oh well. Uh yeah. I don’t know what to say anymore. It’s going to be good. Anyway, I can’t I can’t wait. This week we’re at the BMW. Every single European Tour uh team member is in the field. I was going to name them all, but there every everyone. So, who’s going to win it? And Luke’s playing. Do you think Luke should be playing this week? Yeah. Why not? I don’t know. What should he be doing? I should be playing that. You should be playing that. Yeah. No. No. I’m just thinking, yeah, just Yeah. I don’t I don’t know. Is he not going to have to be doing rather than playing a tournament? What is he going to do? Like I don’t know. I don’t know. He’s maybe got study. He’s got a study to do. Make sure jumpers are the right size. A couple of buttons in the Okay. Yeah. No, he should be playing. That’s good. I I still cannot help but think that the captain’s role is overexaggerated and and I’ll never very difficult. I know I know Paul McInley is as close as I’ve come to hearing somebody that actually makes me think ah well maybe I there’s something in that on the week. But leading up to it, the whole year, you know, so but like no players on the field, do you know? I agree. Yeah, there’s something about it. We over talk the captaincy. He’s not booking the flights or anything like that, I wouldn’t think. No. What’s he doing this? What would he be doing this week? Like phoning up watching the players like he What chest size are you saying? But but the motivational things on the walls and that posters, he’s got some posters to do on Canva. Yeah. No, I don’t think he’s doing that. I think he’s playing golf. I don’t think he’d be scrolling the internet for those um posters either. But look, it’s an important job. Let’s not take it away from him. He’s It’s an important job. Mhm. Yeah. It’s not a 40 a week job. It’s not a No, he’s no shorting the shanks. No, but they’re playing. So is Yanick Paul and Um it’ be interesting to see those particularly uh win again. Um do you know who I think might want to play in the European team? I’m pretty sure he does. Who who you think I’m going to say? Creed. I think he’s hoping. No, it’s Billy Horchel. All right. I like Billy, too. He just he pops up in Europe. You think he wants to play for us? Would you have him if he qualified? Anyway, so that’s that’s what’s happening. PJ Tour, there’s a Diddy’s event, but JT and Max’s defending again. Um, but it’s not much of an event. It’ll be interesting to see how JT does this week then, doesn’t it? Yeah. Right. Cuz historically, if that’s the field, you’re saying it’s a day event, you’d be expecting him to be in the top five anyway at worst. All he has to do is do a Shane Larry week. Then everyone will be quieting down a we bit. Doesn’t have to win it. just has to be on the leaderboard at some point. If I if I said higher or lower than 20th place, where are you putting him? On a diddy event like this, it should be I’m going to say he’s going to be lower though. All right, there you go. No, he’s top five finish. I mean, it’s a diddies event. It’s a PG tour event. I mean, it’s a there’s no diddies. It’s probably as strong a field as the Wentworth. I mean, when you look at it on paper. No, it’s not. Sorry. I said no, it’s not. How do you know? We got We’ve got every single one of our Red Cup players playing. You’re saying their Diddy event has got 12 players better than that. When you look at the world ranking and you look at the points allocated to each event, I I I haven’t got the number. I haven’t got the number, but the PJ tour event is normally probably close. Yeah. Because of the world ranking of the average golfer in the field. I mean, fine, but it’s not. Well, I can’t wait till next week. I’m looking forward to next week’s podcast now cuz I’m going to work this out. Yeah, I’m not here. So, you can say whatever you want. I don’t care what the numbers tell you. It’s not as strong a field. It’s not as strong a field. You might win the same world ranking points all you want, but it’s not as strong a field to win it. Sorry. Outside of Maroy, Ram, Fleetwood, Larry, Fitzpatrick, Hovind, the European team. Well, I mean, once you go down the bottom of the European team. Okay. Right. I get you. Right. Okay.
