Ireland are twelve shots off the pace after day one of the Espirito Santo Trophy as the World Amateur Team Championships got underway at Tanah Merah Country Club, Singapore.
Ireland, made up of Beth Coulter of Kirkistown Castle, Elm Park’s Emma Fleming and Áine Donegan of Lahinch share 20th place on a combined four-over-par.
The United States of America lead the way on eight-under, one shot clear of Korea and three ahead of Spain.
Both Donegan and Fleming carded rounds of 74 while Coulter’s round of 77 was not included in the day one scoring.
Donegan, making her final appearance in green before entering the professional ranks was level-par after nine holes after bogeying the second and fifth but bouncing back with birdies on the third and eighth.
The Clare woman made back to back bogeys on 12 and 13 but managed to avoid any further damage with a string of pars to close.
Fleming was also level after nine as she rallied after two early bogeys with back to back birdies on 7 and 8. But like Donegan, the UCD student couldn’t find any birdies on the back nine and had to settle for bogeys on 11 and 17.
Coulter will be hoping for better tomorrow after a birdieless round.
On the individual leaderboard, Donegan and Fleming are tied 43rd with Coulter just inside the top-70.
