But he gave a halftime reporter a mouthful. He wouldn’t let her he wouldn’t let that pole lady get a question out. First of all, what she say? You got to call better plays or something. The [ __ ] Ben Johnson juggler, right? It’s is it’s like Shaquille O’Neal finger. It’s the thickest biggest thing on his body. And when he get that little thing out of his neck, the way he was looking down on that pole lady, oh my god. Every time she like, “What do you this?” It It was It was It was very It was crazy. Them commentators, analyzers, whatever you want, analysts, they sucked. They the [ __ ] they were saying was dumb. It was a lot. I think it was one pass Caleb dumped off to Swift and he got like eight yards off off of it and they was like, “Well, I would have went to KCK on the crossing route.” On the crossing route, why would he throw that? What? Look, I mean, he he might have could have if he had It’s a It’s a in hindsight kind of thing. You know what I’m saying? AC at him, what’s up, man? Get in here. Comment was dirt. Tell them the truth. like they always they wanna they want to be a part of the good crew, the good commentator crew. It’s easy. Like I say all the time, Mark, what I say, it’s easy to be pessimistic about the Bears. It’s easy. That’s the easiest thing you could probably do in sports is to be go be a beat writer. It no matter what we get into when we actually start jumping into some of these segments, remember they fought hard. This game was won and or lost in the trenches because I mean I it’s so many but I have to because this is the this is the reason this game was so close. They got bullied they got bullied that Raiders Dline and this is this is this is what’s to come because we got a lot of good teams. We ain’t g we ain’t playing the Cowboys. We played the Lions. They had a decent D line they got at us. Uh Vikings, decent D line they got at us. This was another decent D line they got. We got the Raven. We got some decent D lines coming up. We got Green Bay twice still. Yeah, they was getting pushed around. I mean, I’ve never seen quarters for sure. I’ve never seen so many runs stopped behind the line of scrimmage like the got pushed around. That’s why they struggled. That was that was the story of the game. If the if the defense struggle, and when I say trenches, it ain’t even just the offense. The Dline, too. The Dline played a phenomenal game, but when you add the trenches, when it’s time to stop the run, where the Dline has to step up, they were terrible. Terrible. That was pretty good. Ashton Genty had his best game by far of the season. I think the linebackers was the issue, but go right ahead. You you but see see you can’t play linebacker if your D line ain’t doing their job. That’s just how it goes. They did. That’s just how it goes. I thought we watch the tape though. We do all 22. The D that trenches on this team is is is it’s atrocious. It is horrible. And we have the top five. We have a top five paid Dline or defense in in total in our interior the O line interior O line. just cashed them out and I think like there’s no reason they should be playing this bad 40% of that money wasn’t even on the field today. About 30% of that money wasn’t even out there today. Oh, Grady Jarrett. Okay. Okay. So, you had drafted Jamar Turner in the second round as well. You got a you got a Javon Dexter who you got you got players like I said you paid them. You paid them. They should. And this ain’t the first game they got ran on. When Grady Jarrett was on the field, he was Den Cook. If Grady was making a difference, I would be like, “Okay, you right.” But Grady won’t make no [ __ ] difference. The trenches is my point in both. That’s both sides. They can’t run the ball. They cannot run the [ __ ] football. That’s evident. I’m not like, you can’t disagree with that. They can’t run the football. I’m not disagreeing with that. Well, how can you run the football? They did not run it decently. It was not decent. Second half. I’m talking about second half. He can’t cuz he can’t [ __ ] run the ball. That is my not so great. The trenches continue to rear their ugly head and hold this team back. But football starts in the trenches. You can’t get the ball out to DJ. You can’t get the ball to Rome. The running back can’t be Ashton Genty dealing with the same thing in in the Raiders. This is his best game by far. Yeah. You can’t get your playmakers involved without that O line. You cannot stop. You can’t help your quarterback. Jaylen Johnson can’t be himself. Patrick Certan, um Sauce Gardner, all the top quarterbacks cannot do their job without who? The trenches. And they re That’s why that game was 25 to 24. We were by far the better team. We have way more talent than that team has. And we went 25 to 24 because we lack the trenches. We lack in the trenches and that’s why it was a onepoint game. Great Caleb, my not so great is the trenches once again. Take it away, Wes. My great is the wounded but still somehow productive for two weeks in a row. Bears secondary without JJ who went down was it he went down last week I think. Did he go down last week or the week before? I can’t remember because we ain’t had week two he was right. Because the pass game was just shot even all the completions they got was short out route towards the the you know outside the numbers. Uh they did have some little short screens but that that’s not like nothing deep downfield. Nothing deep downfield. Nothing out. And then you got three interceptions. Am I right? Cuz Kevin had two. No, three. Yeah. And Tyreek had one. Tyreek had three. That’s three. One, two, three. That’s baseball strike. You’re out. You know what I mean? Like that’s what that sec this wounded segment. So I have to give this secondary. They’re great because you said the trenches suck so bad, right? Defense and offense, right? But these guys, these cornerbacks, safeties, they were, you seen Tyreek, they were chasing dudes around in man. Coverage. dudes around. They was in man coverage chasing dudes down skip. So my great is to this bear secondary who oh my god we we have to add into I know we can we can put him though he he danced on both dance floors. Uh he he was there last year. you know who I’m gonna talk about in a minute. But without Jaylen, without Kyler, without Terrell Smith, who’s done for the season, right? Nick Mloud left the game at one point. Nick Mloud left. I don’t even know who replaced him. Who know? It could have been Josh Black. Uh Josh Blackwell. Yeah, we just didn’t see it yet cuz you text me and said, “Look at look at Azie.” I said, “I didn’t even see him. I said, “Oh yeah, now I see it.” You know what I’m saying? It could have been, but that secondary, the depth in it, the drop off is so like it’s shown. And I said this, remember Mark? I said I said the drop off in this secondary is like A+ a minus a B+ B. It’s not like a terrible like most teams get like can’t ever have too many DBs, man. Can’t never have too many of them. and they is still out there causing turnovers and all that kind of stuff and everything else. That’s my my my great is that I love your great. They need a little discipline to clean up some stuff, but the pocket look way better with them out there than Darnell and [ __ ] Braxton Jones. Just the belief they have in each other, the belief they have in this coaching staff. I thought it really shown through. This was a this is a huge win for for our team. Um, finding a way in the fourth quarter to come out on top. I I just thought that was outstanding for us. So, um, proud of our guys, proud of the locker room. I know it’s an ugly game at times. Uh, you know, I thought give a lot of credit to the Raiders. They they played their tails off. I which we knew they would. You know, Coach Carol is such a good coach. Absolutely. Um and they have so many good players on on their side that uh it was going to be a dog fight and and they were desperate for a win and we were desperate for a win as well. And I’m just saying Carol is 100 years old. He’s been here since. So like I said, that’s a huge character win for our team and uh I just love it for them. Open it up. Josh Blackwell as you’ve got to know him. What’s gonna say about him to make that play? Yeah, man. he uh he came through for us uh right when we needed it. And you know, I’m listening on a headset and coach High Totower who does just such an incredible job with our special teams unit um in all those phases. He he’s kind of narrating it in real time and he’s like, “Yeah, Blackwell’s going to get this one for us. He’s going to come through.” And sure enough, it came to light just like he thought. And so, um man, I was so proud of him. He’s a he’s a guy that not only is is a key cog of what we do on special teams, but a a key contributor there as a backup in our DB room. And uh you know that that was huge for him. Special teams ace. Special teams ace, Mr. Jesse Devivo, Marine Corps extraordinaire. That’s one of my That’s my devil dog right there. Carol is insane. I know. He’s a Seahawks fan. He love Carol. But we we don’t panic. We just don’t. I’m sorry. That’s not who we are and that’s not what we do. And so, uh, you know, we have a three and out to start the game, I believe, on offense and, you know, defense comes through for us and, you know, they end up with four turnovers on the day and we’re not able to capitalize on those turnovers to the extent that we’d like to. Um, you know, and I I could see where either side of the ball would get really frustrated. I could see where the defense would get frustrated with the offense and and uh the offense frustrated with ourselves and uh you know that that didn’t happen. Everybody stayed the course. No one panicked whatso came in at halftime. We hit that talked about breath and let’s come out and play 30 minutes and find a way to win. What impressed you most about the game when you drive? Oh shoot. Um, well, I I just I I can’t remember play by play to be honest with you, but I remember talking to Caleb before he took the field and I said, “This is this is what you’re built for. These are the moments that that he thrives in the most.” I think that’s that’s really been the story of his life to be honest with you. And I know he came through for us in a big way. Um, that was a that was a heck of a pass rush. we we knew what 98 was capable of and then uh you know the rest of those guys are are really are really hard blocks as well. And so um for us to look up and we only had one sack it certainly felt a lot worse than that because Caleb was having to elude a lot and uh continue to to evade that rush and so um you know he found a way the the playmakers found a way uh our O line found a way to hold on there for us to get a touchdown when we needed it the most. It was tough sliding through the line game most of the game, but on third and four there at the end to to call on Swift, what what went into that decision to call I mean I’m sure it’s four down territory, but to trust Swift to trust your guys in that moment. Yeah. Um I go away from [ __ ] Crosby. What do you It’s a hard one to answer right now to be honest with you. I I just in the moment it’s just a hard thing telling you is going to work. Why you did it? I would have did it too. My gut was probably wrong a lot of the night. be a white woman downtown go the other way and and really it’s a credit to those guys. I mean they they know uh we get down there inside the five. That’s what we want to do. We want to we want to be able to run it inside the 10 yard line and and uh I think they came through for us. What did you see from Jens? It’s it’s exactly what you saw on tape. um whether in college or the first three games this year, he’s he’s so compact that uh you have to hit him a certain way to bring him down. It’s it’s really hard for one individual to bring him down. We saw that time and time again tackles, they’re not going to do it. Um it’s going to take a swarming mentality by the entire defense and you got to get just right to to bring them to the ground. So, um you know, we had we had a plan uh to to look to contain them. Um and and uh he got after us pretty good. I thought that line for them they came out guns ablazing as well. Yeah. Yeah. It’s my first time here in Allegiant and uh pretty cool to see the the Bears fans travel like they did. You know, it’s uh the appeal of Vegas might have had something to do with it, but yeah, I’d love for that to happen uh every away game we have going forward. my man DJ Ace Veto likely to get some snaps for us. Um he’s uh he’s a guy that just keeps getting better each and every week. We were just at the point where we weren’t doing a whole lot offense. We felt like that might give us a little spark and and ignite us a little bit on offense at the end of the day. Sparkle was looking for second straight game. Three interceptions second straight game. They’re not even interceptions. A couple of them were diving on. I know. I golly, we we talked about it. We talked about it last night how uh we were going to need to get some turnovers uh on the road here to get our first road win. And those guys came through. By came through with two of them. I thought Tyreek had a had a one of the more athletic plays I’ve seen. The way he bounced off after that, I thought that was that was incredible. And then um yeah, that that we don’t win that game without those turnovers. You know, that just the way that they were able to move the ball um and then uh you know, like I said, had we been able on offense to capitalize on that a little bit more, it wouldn’t have come down to the wire like that. But, uh before the red zone for us on offense, it’s not going to it’s not going to win you a whole lot of games. And sorry if you already answered this, but uh you talk all the time about take an adjustment with Caleb today in the past rush that he was facing. Did you see some adjustment in the second half to realize that there’s there isn’t time you have to do that? Yeah, I I I really felt like our guys uh our guys just focused in and they took a deep breath there at halftime and they they took a lot of pride in doing the best job that they could. So, I’ll have to go back and I’ll look at the tape. Um I don’t know play call-wise if I was really that that different in the second half than I was the first half, but um I’ll have to go back and I’ll look at that. Yeah, you were you were a little different. We saw earlier. Yeah, you know, that was that was one of those uh um you know, we have a group of guys that come up with plays and we felt like that could take advantage of something that we saw. It comes down to execution as a as a team on all sides of the ball. Um if you look at it, offense did their job at the end of the game. Obviously, it’s not it’s not what we wanted, you know, the whole game, but when it came down to it, you can only win the game in the fourth quarter. And so, uh it came down to that. We marched down the field. Everybody did a good job on that on the offensive side of the ball. Defense did a great job. Obviously, you know, they wanted to keep him out of field goal range. They have a great kicker. he was in field goal range, but no, defense did a good job keeping at a long distance for a field goal, meaning that the trajectory of the ball has to be kicked at a certain height and and and the special team. So, all three sides of the ball at the end of the game came through and that’s what you wish for. You mentioned a tough day offensively overall. How did you adjust to seeing that you’re just not going to have a lot of time, you’re going to be under pressure the whole day? Yeah, I think it’s something that, you know, um it’s something that you know coming into a game. I think the guys did a great job to be honest. Um they got a they got a hell of a player over there. Uh he’s probably best player that I’ve ever played against so far in my career. And so man dog see twice this year to the game trying to get the ball out as fast as possible, get it to my guys. And um I think I can do a better job of that early in the game. Uh getting everybody in rhythm. Um so that’s a part of it. But um you know at the end of the day that’s what happened. Um and and uh you know we got we got some guys in there that I mean it’s their first time you know playing and suiting up especially versus a guy like that and they did a hell of a job. So, um I’m I’m proud of the guys. Um especially the way we fought. Um that’s that’s all you can ask for at the end of the day. Um and now we’re we’re two and two going into a bye. Did it remind you at all the commanders game kind of before the marching just like the feeling of mar like it’s slow slow slow the whole game Yeah. Yeah. I think I think I think you can say that it reminds you of of of that moment um of being able to have a grimy game like you said and just you know things aren’t working things aren’t working as well as you want. uh you’re you’re in you know your defense put you in I think we were in you know for all those picks or something or at least three of them I think great field position 30 yards out um and and you know they did a hell of a job and so um and and and we didn’t do our part in those senses of of of being able to go score and you know create momentum for us as you know us as a team but the defense you know they stood strong for us special teams stood strong for us and you know at the end of the day we all come came together at the end and you know came out victorious. drives. Yeah. Ice in his [ __ ] veins, Dan Weider. Um I think those moments that, you know, we’re we’re born for that I’m born for. And um I think uh being able to portray the belief that, you know, guys, this is all we got. This is all we need. We’re we’re, you know, in a in a position where um we’re not in a favorite position. We’re down. Um it’s it’s all 11 of us on the field and we got to go do a job great. Um I think uh just the belief, the trust, the hard work that we put in um those are the moments that you that you wish for. They was going to dog you if you didn’t pull it off. So being able to have those moments um and and come through um is important for one the confidence um especially like I said in the moment where you know it’s not a favorite position. You’re away, you’re down um and you got to go win the game. So it’s it’s a confidence builder. It’s a culture builder for us and you know especially the type of game we had He lost his voice. Um, being able to to to come together in the end, it builds a lot of confidence for us. And obviously, we have things that we have to find find ways to get better. Uh, get the run game going, get early completions, fast completions. Um, and then obviously when we get our shots, take them. Um, but I think uh I think we’re, you know, uh, we’re creating something, you know, special here and we got to keep going. some that we got to keep building on. But, um, it’s a it’s a tough team, tough opponent over there, tough defense, and they got they got, you know, some some really good players over there. And so, being able to to come together, um, and find way to find a way to come out victorious is um, like I said, I think it’s a big win for us, especially on our first one on the road after which which ends. Okay. I I was just eating. my connection is low right now. So well um to be honest uh in that moment Ben came over to me right before and he goes um you know you know these are times that that you’re made for. So you know provided you know belief and confidence that he has in me and then um from there I went into the I went to the huddle and you know looked everybody in the eyes and you know this is this is the moment the game you know just be as composed. Um, obviously we had a negative play on that drive that set us back I think 10 yards on the holding and uh just just being composed trying to be as calm as possible for those guys and look everybody in the eyes and understand that this is our moment. This is where we go win the game. How much does you did? Yes, you did Mr. Williams. You definitely went and won that game guys with that resilience to stay in it because you got I mean I’m sure he was frustrated as you were. Yeah. How did he kind of help you guys stay level? Yeah. I mean kudos to to the coaches. Uh we go into halftime and we had I don’t know how many passing yards and how many rushing yards, but it was I think it was below 100 both. It was low. Total low. So I think he knew y’all sucked. I think when we got into that to that locker room um Ben’s Ben’s calmness, Coach Johnson’s calmness, uh his belief, his understand his understand that’s not our brand of football. Um, that’s that’s what he told us and and we went back out there and we we found ways to to to to stop them to move the ball down the field and special teams doing their job also. Y’all stopped the [ __ ] out of me in the first half. Y’all kept stopping. I was sitting down. Um, and and my guy Petey was right behind me. Um, I was sitting down trying to be calm, just, you know, um, not too high, not too low in those moments. Uh, believe in our guys. Um, and and, you know, they did a hell of a job being able to come through for us. Then how do you describe the noise of that 35,000 pair of fans that react? Yeah, it’s it’s uh so I was looking I didn’t have my eyes closed or anything so I was looking and um you know I’m I’m watching and obviously you can hear him kick and you’re trying to figure out where the ball went. So I’m looking up trying to find the ball and um I end up seeing the ball you know squirt out you know only you know 15 yards or so and um you know those are moments that that that you wish for that we train for opportunities that those guys train for. Proud of those guys. Happy for those guys. It was a big moment for us. We didn’t even get to talk about the touchdown. Um and um I I felt and saw some space. Felt and saw some space and uh let just the belief in Rome that that when he was going to break um and and and stood in there and cuz that was an anticipated throw. if I was gonna get hit, I was gonna get hit, but believing everyone was gonna come out his break and I was gonna deliver him a solid ball enough to, you know, be able to catch it at least. Um, and and, you know, he did a great job being able to catch it, catch it on the run and go score. You talked about belief. Yeah. To have two wins in a row going into the just be able to marinate on that a little bit. What What does this mean to the team that you got to prove concept? Yeah, this is big. Um, every win is big for for belief and confidence for us. But, uh, to be able to go 0 and2 um, and then and then fight back. Uh, now going to the buy being two and two. Uh, kudos to coaches. Kudos to us as as as players. Um, and and like I’ve said, we got too many guys that care. Um, our our guys, whether it’s coaches or players, but um, specifically speaking about the players, we got a lot of guys that care and care about each other, but also care about um, the outcome of of of this team. Um, and so, um, I think I think being able to come together. I think I think adversity does that, um, to the great teams, um, and and we had some adversity our first two games versus verse divisional opponents. And so, um, being able to come together, fight together, um, and be able to have a game how we had last week, but also have this, you know, this this supremely tough game where, you know, uh, not all cylinders are hitting on the same moment and then, you know, we all come together at a certain time and we go win the game. Couple more bizarre question, but given who your head coach is, was that a fake stumble? That was a fake stumble. See, I knew it. I knew it. It was a fake stumble. They did a great job on defense. Um they end up getting some run through. Um I should have hit Rome even when even after the scramble was frustrating being able to miss that pass, but um they did a good job on defense um and and they covered it down um and got some run through. So, I couldn’t go through the other progressions, but um you know, yeah, it was a fake stumble. I knew it. Pretty encouraged about the timing of the feeling like you got a chance offensively to scale that or zoom out. Look at it. What What do you think happens over the next two weeks that allow you to kind of reset coming out? Yeah, I’ve I’ve uh an early buy like this, I think it I think it does do that for us. Um but also, it’s like another um in a sense like training camp in a way. you get to you get to look back on, you know, what we’ve done well, what we haven’t done well and uh you get to adapt and adjust to to those things and I think us as a team that’s what we’re going to do. Um especially with the momentum that we’ve that we’ve had with, you know, the the the home win, our first home win to to this first, um away win. So, um I think being able to look back on all of that, um and and and the tape always, you know, and and everything feels better when you know you win. But, uh we got to look back on it and look back on it and be truth tellers like I’ve like I’ve said before and figure out what we do best to be able to keep this to keep this win streak going. How’s basketball when it comes to having to make it work in imperfect circumstances or adverse circumstances today where you don’t have a running game? Yeah. Um, I think running games I think the biggest growth is is being able to keep my composure for the guys. Uh, most importantly, it’s not just the the other 10 guys on the field. Um, it’s it’s it’s the whole team. And so, I think there was moments in the game where, you know, I got frustrated and um the growth in that standpoint of of of not having whether it’s bad body language or, you know, not saying anything or, you know, raising my temper, you know, maybe too much. Um, I think I think that’s been the growth. Um and so being able to see the composure from me um in those bad moments, those tough moments maybe after a pick where their guy comes from right DN to the middle field, tips it and you know those are those are frustrating moments where um you know those are moments that that can change momentum and you know the guys look at me um and they’re like okay you know he’s he’s composed he’s you know he’s still strong willed that you know we’re going to come out here we’re going to you know score this next drive and maybe we don’t but you know we’re going to get up we’re going to fight um fall down seven times. Like I think he has at least two or three penalties every week for the last he probably got 12 penalties against him in a month and that’s me being nice. I don’t know if he got more than Darnell. They they fighting for the most penalties. Him and Darnell on that right like you was saying last week that [ __ ] right side that right side was gasping for air. They was drowning. You know what I mean? So for me to see that second time coming out I saw them against Crosby. Crosley went against Theo and then he went against uh Azie. He’s beating Theo ass.
