Tommy Fleetwood’s caddie has been hailed for his efforts during the Ryder Cup by wife and former Lioness Rachel Brown-Finnis. Fleetwood has been flanked by fellow Merseysider Ian Finnis for several years.

The bagsman aided his good friend in producing an exceptional performance over the weekend in New York. Fleetwood was the star man as Team Europe secured a rare away victory in the prestigious tournament.

Finnis’ wife Rachel joined in the celebrations from afar, as the ex-Everton and Liverpool goalkeeper shared a message of pride on social media. Her post was a selfie of him and Fleetwood together.

She wrote: “TEEEEAAAAAAAMMM!!!!! What an effort @rydercupeurope -that was absolutely sensational!! Also, I couldn’t be prouder of @finoefc with what he has been through. Thanks Tommy lad. Party!!!!”

Messages of support flooded in from various areas of sport, with ex-Lioness Jill Scott writing: “Love this, well done guys.” ITV sports reporter Jacqui Oatley said: “Amazing @finoefc, Tommy and co have made my husband happy in a way I never could! Congrats boys.”

BBC and Sky Sports star Eilidh Barbour added her own thoughts, writing: “Incredible! Caddie/bouncer this week. What a team.”

Barbour is likely referencing the heated moment Finnis was forced to step in between his golfer and American star Bryson DeChambeau after a spat broke out between Team Europe and Team USA stars.

The incident began when DeChambeau’s caddie, Greg Bodine, stepped in front of Justin Rose’s line when he was preparing to putt during Saturday’s fourballs match. This led to a heated discussion between the two rivals, which playing partner Fleetwood got involved in.

Acting as the peacemaker, 6ft 7in Finnis stepped in and said: “Let’s all just chill. Let’s play. He can take as long as he wants.”

The situation was diffused almost immediately after the caddie’s interception, showcasing the level of respect Finnis has earned as Fleetwood’s main man throughout his golfing career.

Fleetwood shared his own celebratory Instagram post after Europe’s 15-13 triumph, writing: “Dreams are made of occasions like this. Times when you stand shoulder to shoulder like a true team and win together.

“@lukedonald led like he did in Rome but with more armour, power, knowledge and experience. He deserves all the credit, we were just the pieces on a chess board.

“It’s an honour to receive the Nicklaus/Jacklin award and bringing 4 points home to the team but to be honest I’d do anything for this group of incredibly special human beings!! Love this Team, and always will!!! My heart is [blue].”
