Welcome back to ion golf with the shotgun start. We’re going to bring back a favorite game we’ve developed here over the last month on CBS Sports Network. That’s the mule wheel where we spin the wheel. We are given a name, a blind name, no prep that we have to make a good faith advocate argument for why this person should be on the American Rder Cup team. Sometimes you’re a defense attorney. The facts of the case, you know, your client has literal blood on his hands. But you got to make an argument and that’s what we do with the wheel. So, I’ll go first. Give me a name, PJ. Let’s spin it. And I gotta advocate for him to be on the RDER Cup team. Keegan squat. We have some new additions to the wheel. We have some guys that got taken off. And some new additions. Oh, this is a great one. Actually, this is great. Ryan, don’t call me Ryan. Don’t call me Gerard. It’s Ryan Gerard. Uh, winner of the Barracuda. I didn’t see a second of it. I was in Ireland if you could believe it. I did not see any of it. Um, I guess I could argue he’s highly successful in in alternate kind of formats, alternate kind of scoring, unique format, not just stroke medal play as we’ve seen this past week. So, maybe you get him going in alt shot. Maybe you get him match play, get him going for a team point event. We could seen he could succeed in that. Uh, brings fresh blood. Uh, he’s got two first names. You always like to see that with Ryan Guerrard. Uh, and yeah, that’s my that’s my case. new blood and and a guy who’s legitimately playing well. Is his last name a first name? Gerard. Yeah. Gerard name. My dad’s name is Gerard. My dad is Gerard Porette. Yes, it’s a first name. So, it’s an Irish, I think. Yes. Yes. Ryan I Ryan Gerard. Absolutely. You didn’t even mention that he was in the mix after 18 holes at the PGA. He he was a major contender. Hillborn runs the Ryder Cup. Yep. PGA runs the RDER Cup. They’re familiar. Andy, let’s give this a spin for you. All right. I don’t know how we’re going to follow that up. That was the most topical answer we could have possibly gotten. Oh, there we go. You know, Joe Highmith, you don’t have any guys on the team that wear a bucket hat. And he bucket hat. Um I think he brings a unique sense of style to the uh to the team room. Listen, one of the things like if you’re building a baseball team, you want to you want a balanced lineup. You want righties and lefties. You want to keep the other team, you know, you don’t want them to be able to go to all right-handed relievers to just mow through your lineup. Heismith is a lefty. I think, you know, the American team as his construct, you know, maybe Brian Harmon gets in the mix as a lefty, but you could go alt shot where you go righty lefty combo. You, you know, keep them on their toes. Uh uh everybody always says you need a Pepperdine player on your team in order to really have success. So you’re also getting, you know, former NCAA champion. Like he’s had team matchplay success. They won a national championship with him. That’s my case for Joe Heismith. Add add bucket hats to the budget. Do we have to embroider bucket hats for the uniform budget the for the Ryder Cup? I like that. I was wondering how quick you’d go to the bucket hat and it was line one. Everybody says you need a Pepperdine player. That’s right. Everybody common a common phrase when you’re building a team, you need somebody from Pepperd Knife. Everybody says that. I mean, let’s give you a spin. All right, let’s give you a spin. Every everybody says you need I don’t know if this there’s another Pepperdine player on here. I feel lost. No, he does. Oh. assistant captain, isn’t he? This is another one. Well, we’ve already discussed that Kevin Kner is close with the rest of the team when Kevin Kner came up here as an assistant captain. Uh maybe Gary Woodland was the late ad as the last assistant captain because they were hoping he would make the team. This is a guy that has has some uh team experience. He played on a President’s Cup team after winning the US Open. But he’s uh he’s involved. He knows the guys. He’s already in the team room. He’s been in the back room negotiations. If you’re losing the captain anyway to be playing, why not just lo use lose an assistant captain to like what what what are we losing at that point? Jim Jim Furick is already de facto captaining this team anyway. He he’s done this before. It didn’t really go well, but he doesn’t need a lot of help. So, if we throw Gary in there, I think I think Team USA might be able to survive. He’s close with the team. Uh never actually got to play in a Ryder Cup. I I think this could be a good uh you know career achievement award for for Gary Woodland if if things go that way. He played well in at least one tournament this year too. He did the Houston Houston Houston Open. He did. I mean he it’s the sponsors exemption spot if you’re talking about a career achievement award. He’s he’s very familiar in that spot this year with the SIG signature event sponsors exemptions. Well, a lot of guys on this a lot of guys on this wheel are familiar with that uh spot on their weekly basis. So that’s right. So Ryan Gerard, Joe Highmith. What’s that? Andy Smith again. We got some time. All right. Andy wants to go again. Andy wants to go. The hell with the the hell with the program schedule. The break needed. Let’s go. Let’s go one more time. Who’s got to argue? Andy’s going. Oh, Davis Thompson. Thompson. Listen, he’s a Georgia player. You got Russ Henley, Harris English in in the mix. Why not get a little bit younger Georgia player, keep that pipeline strong? Um, he put together, you know, you talk about dominating performances this week, dominant performance. You know what Scotty Sheffller’s never dominated is the John Deere. Davis Thompson dominated the John Deere last year. And for that, I I think he deserves a spot on the team. He doesn’t He’s not going to bring a big personality that’s going to clash with people. We don’t really even know what his personality is at this point. Um, he’s been playing on tour for five years. We we don’t know what his personality is. Um, there’s nothing that the the New York fans are going to have to get under his skin. I I think this is a great pick. Yeah, Davis Thompson. I I mean, of all the guys we’ve talked about, Ryan Gerard, Joe Highmith, Davis Thompson, and Gary Woodland, I would say Davis Thompson could conceivably play his way onto the team. Now, he’d have to do a lot in the next five weeks or so, but maybe Gerard, maybe Gard could do it. Uh, seems unlikely, but Davis, but that’s why we have the mule wheel. That’s why we have it to throw names like this up for consideration.
