Team Europe won the Ryder Cup, the most prestigious team competition in world golf, on Sunday, beating an American team — on home soil in New York — that was favored heading into the three-day event on Long Island. Team Europe also won in style with uniforms designed by the Italian fashion house Loro Piana.
Loro Piana is known as an avatar of “quiet luxury” before that was a thing, having clothed generations of skiers, sailors, dinner guests, and beach loungers. Golf, too, though the Ryder Cup is one of the few golf tournaments that would never be called quiet. This year’s version (the tournament is held every two years, alternating between sites in the U.S. and Europe) was exceptionally not quiet, with inebriated American fans hurling vulgar abuse at Team Europe players in an atmosphere that was seemingly constructed to make the Europeans feel as uncomfortable as possible.

It didn’t work, with Team Europe jumping out to a commanding lead on Friday and Saturday and hanging on to beat the Americans on Sunday, dressed in different Loro Piana-designed tops each day. On Friday, Team Europe wore four-striped sky-blue shirts, while on Saturday their shirts were kummel, a signature color of the brand. On Sunday, Team Europe was in white, with colors from the European Union flag. Talk on the internet veered toward some malfunctioning collars, but, overall, the look was sharp. Among the crowd, the look was also the opposite of many who attended wearing garish American flag costumes.

Loro Piana began supplying uniforms for the Ryder Cup in 2023, building on a legacy of decades of making durable but fashionable sportswear for not just golf but also sailing, skiing, yachting, and horseback riding. The brand is based in Milan, with LVMH acquiring a majority stake for around $2.6 billion in 2013, but it was founded over a century ago, in 1924, by Pietro Loro Piana, whose family has stayed intimately involved with the brand ever since.

Ralph Lauren dressed the Americans at this year’s Ryder Cup and has for every American team since 2018, in addition to supplying Team USA’s uniforms for Olympic and Paralympics events. Ralph Lauren also dresses staff at the U.S. Open tennis tournament, giving them some more experience than Loro Piana at making clothes for professional versions of country club sports.
Team Europe’s victory, under the circumstances, might be worth a lot more, almost just for exposure. Future Ryder Cup broadcasts will replay the highlights from this year over and over, as they’ve done for dramatic Ryder Cups in years past. Every time, Team Europe will be wearing Loro Piana.
