The Indiana Fever’s season came to an end on Tuesday night, falling to the Las Vegas Aces in the WNBA semi-finals. The offseason for Caitlin Clark has begun, and there is already controversy to deal with.
The top complaints about the WNBA that are discussed frequently are the refs and the pay scale for top players. And one WNBA star was having none of it. Yesterday, Minnesota Lynx star Napheesa Collier, a five-time All-Star, shared her thoughts about the state of the WNBA, and she held nothing back. Yahoo reports that Collier stated that the biggest threat to the success of the WNBA is the “lack of accountability from the league office.” She stated that not caring about the product on the floor is “self-sabotage”.
And then, Collier turned to WNBA commissioner Cathy Englebert and comments she reportedly made about Fever star Caitlin Clark.
Yikes. Needless to say, these comments are not being received well by WNBA fans. Yahoo reports that Caitlin Clark has yet to respond to the comments by the WNBA commissioner.

First, let me say that I am by no means qualified to lead a league like the WNBA. But I don’t think Cathy Englebert is anymore either. Her comments are more proof that the WNBA was simply not prepared for the leap in popularity that players like Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, and now Paige Bueckers have brought with them. New leadership needs to be brought in. New referees need to be hired, and the league needs to learn how to protect its star players, its greatest commodity.
Shoutout to Napheesa Collier for not being afraid to speak the truth. I hope more of the league’s top players join her call for change.
