“Incredible play by the entire team to set multiple school records at 18, 36, and 54 holes,” said Rob Murray. “We came up short on a third straight win, but I can’t ask any more out of this team. We ended September 48-2 against other teams which is a fantastic start to the season.”

Long Beach State finished 1-2 in the secondary tournament that featured 38 different individual golfers at Broadlands Golf Course. Senior Steven Deutsch, competing in his first tournament in nearly two years fired an unreal nine-under par 63 to capture the individual title. With an eagle on 15, eight birdies and just one bogey, his 63 was the low round of the year so far and is just the eighth golfer in program history to shoot 63 or lower in a round. His 9-under matched his tournament finish after a pair of 72s on Monday. “Great to see Steven win with a 63,” added Murray. “He has been working hard and really took his opportunity today.”

Tiger Tahvildari tied for second in the competition, finishing five-under par with a second straight round of 70 to shoot under par in all three rounds. Norwin Gohm tied for 22nd as the third competitor for the Beach as an individual.

On the team side at Colorado National Golf Club, Steen Zeman was the runner-up in the 100-golfer field at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational, wrapping the tournament at 14-under par with a 70 on Tuesday. Ajejandro de Castro Piera had the team’s best score on the final day, a four-under par 68 to climb into a tie for third place. For the third straight round, Krishnav Chopraa and Jack Cantlay had identical scores, both finishing in a tie for 21st at 6-under par after shooting 71-68-71 over three rounds. Jaden Huggins was one stroke back of that duo, finishing the tournament 5-under par after a final day 71.

“Awesome to see Steen playing so well and at a really high level,” noted Murray. “Alejandro also continues to knock on the door of his first win and is being a great leader for us.”

Thomas Schmidt of Arkansas State won the tournament by eight strokes, and that effort helped the Red Wolves hold off the hosts, Colorado, and Long Beach State as the three programs all finished 40-under or better as a team, with Arkansas State winning by one stroke over Colorado and two over the Beach.

Long Beach State will be back in action starting on October 20 when they take part in the Leadership and Golf Collegiate Championship hosted by Saint Mary’s at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course in Seaside, Calif.
