Best Fall Golf in Virginia | Play This Fall: Old Trail Golf Club (Crozet, VA)

Hi, I’m Matt. We’re in Crosseé, 20 miles from Montichello, where founding father Thomas Jefferson once said, “No Virginia autumn is complete without a round of golf at Old Trail.” No, there’s no way he could have said that. Fall in central Virginia has got to be one of the best times of the year to play. crisp air, colorful leaves, and courses that are practically begging for a round. Today, we’re at Old Trail Golf Club in Crosseé, the first stop in our fall golf series. Old Trail opened in 2004, and it’s just 20 minutes west of Charlottesville, but the moment you arrive, it feels like a private escape. The course blends modern design with the Blue Ridge Mountains, framing nearly every hole, giving each shot a cinematic backdrop. The front nine gently rolls across the valley floor. Fairways are generous. The holes are playable. And it’s a great place to really just settle into your round. With the leaves starting to turn, you get flashes of color even in the early holes. A hint of what’s to come on the back n. The back n though is where the mountains really show off. 11 and 12 play within the trees and give you a close-up look of the changing colors, but it’s the par 514th that’s really a signature playing out towards the ridge line framed by the fall colors and a closing stretch that’s more of the same. Mountains looking over you, sweeping views and holes that reward both strategy and a little bravado. Fall brings perfect conditions with perfect Zoya fairways, true greens, and sunsets not to be missed. Just in time for the club’s fourball tournament in October, the course feels alive with color, and every shot is enhanced by the seasonal backdrop. For me, it’s the stretch of 134 15. Standing here in the fairway of 14, mountains behind the green, leaves changing colors, the beautiful downhill par 3 of 15. This is what keeps me coming back every time. And after the round, it’s all about soaking in the views. I’ll take a fourcraft canned cocktail, kick back, and let the fall vibes sink in. And this is just our first stop in the fall golf series. I’m Matt. We’ll see you next round. [Music] Come on. Yes. [Music] Big thanks to Forecraftraft Canned Cocktails for keeping the fall vibes going. Pick up a pack of Forecraft at the new BIES in Mount Crawford just outside of Harrisonenburg.
